Vor dem Hintergrund der sich bis 2000/2030 abzeichnenden dramatischen Veränderung der demographischen Rahmenbedingungen wird das kommunale Finanzsystem am Beispiel Niedersachsens untersucht. Die Ergebnisse der qualitativen Betrachtungen der Auswirkungen auf die kommunale Aufgabenwahrnehmung und der Status-quo-Modellrechnungen deuten auf eine erhebliche Verschlechterung der kommunalen Finanzsituation hin. Weder bei der Verteilung des Gemeindeanteils an der Einkommensteuer noch im kommunalen Finanzausgleich werden die aus der Bevölkerungsentwicklung resultierenden Belastungen systematisch berücksichtigt. Durch eine stärkere Berücksichtigung des Äquivalenzprinzips sowie eine stärkere Aufgabenorientierung bei der Bedarfsbemessung könnte die Rationalität des kommunalen Finanzsystems erhöht werden.

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signal transmission has an essential function in embryonic development and tissue repair, and is dysregulated in the vast majority of malignancies studied. The FGF signaling in the tumor cells is usually increased by autocrine and paracrine mechanisms and gives them a high growth potential, resistance to apoptosis, neoangiogenesis and metastasis, all essential parameters relevant for tumor progression. This makes FGFs, and their tyrosine kinase receptors FGFRs, valuable targets for therapeutic interventions. This book is a collection of 15 recent articles—both original work and reviews—that summarize the current research state effectively. The content covers FGF signaling aspects in gastric, skin, liver, esophageal cancer, melanoma, mesothelioma and glioblastoma, including one article that addresses the role of FGF in the tumor-microenvironment cross-talk. Several reports describe the development of compounds targeting FGFRs, their structure and interaction with the receptor molecules, and their effectivity in preclinical and clinical testing. In summary, the papers demonstrate the complexity of the topic, with various FGF ligands and receptors involved and the need for further research. They also present results that fuel hope that targeting cancer with dysfunctional FGF signaling can become a realistic treatment option.

Stable and radioactive isotopes in water are powerful tools in the tracking of the path of water molecules through the whole water cycle. In the last decade, a considerable number of studies have been published on the use of water isotopes, and their number is ever-growing. The main reason is the development of new measurement techniques (i.e., laser absorption spectroscopy) that allow measurements of stable isotope ratios at ever-higher resolutions. Therefore, this compilation of papers has been published to address the current state-of-the-art water isotope methods, applications, and interpretations of hydrological processes, and to contribute to the rapidly growing repository of isotope data, which is important for future water resource management. We are pleased to present here a book with new findings in thirteen original research papers and one review paper issued in the Water MDPI Special Issue (SI) “Use of Water Isotopes in Hydrological Processes”. The authors report the use of water isotopes in hydrological processes worldwide, including studies at both local and regional scales related to either precipitation dynamics or to different applications of water isotopes in combination with other hydrochemical parameters in investigations of surface water, snowmelt, soil water, groundwater and xylem water to identify the hydrological and geochemical processes.
