Jahrhundert typisch ist: den Wettstreit zwischen den Wissenschaften selbst, der sich aus dem Wettstreit ihrer Künste speist. Die jeweilige Kunstwissenschaft, so die zugrunde liegende Hypothese, bezieht ihre Geltung und ihren Rang aus der allgemeinen Wertschätzung ihrer Bezugskunst. Auf diese Weise geraten die Künste und ihre Wissenschaften in eine sich wechselseitig verstärkende Konkurrenz, die ihren Ausdruck in zahlreichen Debatten über die jeweilige Leitkunst findet. Die interdisziplinär hier versammelten Beiträge erschließen aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven die wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Ausdifferenzierungs- und Homogenisierungsprozesse, in deren Zusammenhang der Wettstreit der Künste und ihrer Wissenschaften im 19.
