Thomas Love Peacock (1785-1866) was an English satirist and author. Peacock was a close friend of Percy Bysshe Shelley and they influenced each other's work. He wrote satirical novels, each with the same basic setting - characters at a table discussing and criticizing the philosophical opinions of the day. He worked for the British East India Company. His own place in literature is pre-eminently that of a satirist. That he has nevertheless been the favourite only of the few is owing partly to the highly intellectual quality of his work, but mainly to his lack of ordinary qualifications of the novelist, all pretension to which he entirely disclaims. He has no plot, little human interest, and no consistent delineation of character. His personages are mere puppets, or, at best, incarnations of abstract qualities such as grace or beauty. His comedy is Aristophanic. He suffers from that dramatist's faults and, though not as daring in invention, shares many of his strengths. His works include Headlong Hall (1815), Nightmare Abbey (1818), Maid Marian (1822), The Misfortunes of Elphin (1829), Crotchet Castle (1831), and Gryll Grange (1861).

The volume explores the category of urban spaces that are self-managed by the inhabitants and can be recognized as common goods: urban communities. These are defined as third spaces (neither public nor private) and recognized on the basis of seven characteristics. Furthermore, some proposals are made on how planning can adequately treat these places, through the comparison with some municipal policies and on the basis of the self-determination of experiences in order to build a city really in the hands of its inhabitants. In fact, urban communities can be seen as a strategic place for testing new relationships between citizens and between them and institutions.

This book is a collection of papers written by leaders in the field of lateralized brain function and behaviour in non-human animals. The papers cover the asymmetry of brain mechanisms and behaviour in a wide range of both vertebrate and invertebrate species. Each paper focuses on one of the following topics: the link between population-level lateralization and social behaviour; the processes in the avian brain that permit one brain hemisphere to take control of behaviour; lateralized attention to predators and the common pattern of lateralization in vertebrate species; visual and auditory lateralization; influences that alter the development of lateralization—specifically, the effect of temperature on the development of lateralization in sharks; and the importance of understanding lateralization when considering both the training and welfare of dogs. Collectively, these studies address questions of why different species have asymmetry of brain and behaviour, how it develops, and how this is dealt with by these different species. The papers report on the lateralization of different types of behaviour, each going beyond merely reporting the presence of asymmetry and shedding light on its function and on the mechanisms involved in its expression.

The Greek Anthology, a compilation of epigrams from the Classical, Hellenistic and Byzantine periods, is the larger epigrammatic garland in Greek language that we possess. Organized in modern times in 16 books, it depends mostly on two manuscripts, the so-called Palatinus (Palatinus Graecus 23 + Parisinus Graecus Suppl. 384 – X cent.) and Maximus Planudes’ autograph (Marcianus Graecus 481 – beginnings of the XIV). This volume, the first of a planned series, offers the translation of two of those 16 books, thematically united by the fact that both gather ecphrastic epigrams, i.e. poems composed upon plastic works of art. With Book II, work of Cristodoros from the beginnings of the VI century AD, the reader can walk through the statuary collection held at the famous baths of Zeuxippus in Constantinople. As for Book III, it gathers 19 anonymous epigrams on the pillars of the Apollonis Temple in Cyzicus (built in the II cent. BC), which must also had been composed in the VI century AD. Altogether, Books II and III end-up being a testimony of the use of poetry with political and touristic purposes. Besides a thematic and linguistic introduction, which does not intent to be extensive, the translation also presents some interpretative notes, especially related to myth.

Rev. Pardee Butler was born at Skaneateles, Onondaga County, New York, in 1816, the son of Phineas and Sarah Pardee Butler. His family migrated to Wadsworth, Medina County, Ohio, in 1818, and to Sandusky Plains, Ohio, in 1839. He married Sibjl S. Carleton, daughter of Joseph Carleton, at Sullivan, Ashland County, Ohio, in 1843. Their family migrated to Iowa in 1850, to Illinois, and in 1855 to Kansas. He was a minister, and fought against slavery, and for prohabition. He died at his home near Farmington, Kansas, in 1888.

Julian Staben examines chilling effects, framed as deterrence-based lines of argument, in the jurisprudence of the Bundesverfassungsgericht (German Federal Constitutional Court) and compares them with the jurisprudence of the US Supreme Court. Chilling effects follow distinct patterns when it comes to online behaviour and emerging digital practices and therefore call for their constitutional reassessment. Julian Staben's work enables a more methodologically reflective use of these arguments in the judicial discourse.

Dieser Band enthält die Referate des am 17. Oktober 2008 veranstalteten 7. Göttinger Workshops zum Familienrecht. Vor dem Hintergrund der Reform des deutschen Güterrechts unternahm er den Brückenschlag zur Diskussion im Rahmen der Commission on European Family Law über ein europäisches Güterrecht unter der Frage, inwieweit die deutsche Zugewinngemeinschaft als Modell für ein europäisches Güterrecht dienen könnte. Die Grundlagen für die Diskussionen bildeten eine Darstellung der Zugewinngemeinschaft und der geplanten Reformen (Gerd Brudermüller) und eine rechtsvergleichende Übersicht über die Ehestände in Europa (Walter Pintens). Daran schloss sich ein Bericht über die Arbeit der Commission on European Family Law an Grundsätzen für ein europäisches Güterrecht an (Dieter Martiny). Abschließend wurde dann die Leitfrage diskutiert, ob die Zugewinngemeinschaft des deutschen Rechts als Vorbild für einen europäischen Güterstand geeignet ist (Anne Röthel).
