Sociale gelijkheid is goed voor iedereen. Het vormt een buffer tegen drugsgebruik,
criminaliteit, gezondheidsproblemen (lichamelijk én psychisch)
en wantrouwen (van mensen jegens elkaar en de gemeenschap). Streven
naar meer gelijkheid is dan ook geen filantropische onderneming, maar
een zinvolle en noodzakelijke activiteit om het welzijn van anderen én van
onszelf te verbeteren.
Sociale ongelijkheid is een complex vraagstuk. Wetenschappelijk
inzicht, opgebouwd over een langere tijd en vanuit meerdere perspectieven,
is onontbeerlijk voor structurele oplossingen. De Universiteit van Amsterdam
(UvA) heeft een brede expertise op dit terrein. Ongelijkheid is een speerpunt
in het onderzoek. Het Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies, verbonden
aan de sociale faculteit van de UvA, combineert wetenschappelijke expertise
op dit gebied met maatschappelijk engagement. Onderzoekers van verschillende
disciplines werken er samen om greep te krijgen op het ontstaan én
het voorkomen van ongelijkheid.
De hoofdstukken in deze bundel laten hiervan mooie voorbeelden zien.
De auteurs presenteren niet alleen wat ze al weten, maar formuleren ook
nieuwe kennisvragen. In de verschillende bijdragen staan grootstedelijke
vraagstukken centraal: over wonen, mobiliteit, duurzaamheid, onderwijs,
radicalisering en arbeidsparticipatie. De casussen komen vaak uit Amsterdam,
maar zijn mondiaal relevant, ze spelen in alle wereldsteden. Hoe
stimuleren we een bloeiende creatieve economie en houden we tegelijkertijd
de middenklasse en de laaggeschoolden in de stad? Hoe ontwikkelen we de
stad met oog voor ongelijkheid tussen bevolkingsgroepen in zowel (woon)
ruimte als inkomen? Hoe doen we dat op een duurzame manier? Hoe maken
we slim en verantwoord gebruik van kunstmatige intelligentie? Hoe betrekken
we alle burgers bij de samenleving?

Ribosome inactivating proteins (RIPs) form a vast family of hundreds of toxins from plants, fungi, algae and bacteria. RIP activities have also been detected in animal tissues. They target a single adenine of a ribosomal RNA, thereby blocking protein synthesis and leading intoxicated cells to apoptosis. The role of plant RIPs may be related to plant defense against predators and viruses, plant senescence or bacterial pathogenesis. Most RIPs are no threat to human or animal health. However, several bacterial RIPs are major virulence factors involved in severe epidemic diseases such as dysentery or the hemolytic uremic syndrome that may occur in patients suffering from Shiga toxin-producing entero-hemorrhagic Escherichia coli infection. Several plant RIPs such as ricin toxin, abrin or sarcin have been, or may be involved in accidental or criminal poisonings, political intimidation or bio-suicides. Health crisis, biosafety and biosecurity issues became a major concern and many efforts are made to develop treatments. Finally, RIPs can be engineered into immunotoxins to destroy cancer cells or cells chronically infected by viruses.This book presents the most recent data on all aspects of RIPs including function, diversity and evolution, mechanism, pathophysiology, medical countermeasures and engineering into anticancer drugs.

Mycotoxins represent a significant issue for the feed industry and the safety of the feed supply chain, with an impact on human health, animal health and production, economies, and international trade. The globalization of the trade in agricultural commodities and the lack of legislative harmonization have contributed significantly to the discussion about the awareness of mycotoxins entering the feed/food supply chain. The feed industry is a sustainable outlet for food processing industries, converting byproducts into high-quality animal feed. Mycotoxin occurrence in food byproducts from different technological processes is a worldwide topic of interest for the feed industry, aiming to increase the marketability and acceptance of these products as feed ingredients and include them safely in the feed supply chain. Since mycotoxin contamination cannot be completely prevented pre- or post-harvest, the modern feed industry needs new tools for monitoring and managing the risk of mycotoxins and strategies to prevent and reduce mycotoxins in compound feed manufacturing. The aim of this Special Issue book was to bring together a collection of valuable articles with innovative ideas for a sustainable and competitive feed industry.
