Die jeweilige Kunstwissenschaft, so die zugrunde liegende Hypothese, bezieht ihre Geltung und ihren Rang aus der allgemeinen Wertschätzung ihrer Bezugskunst. Auf diese Weise geraten die Künste und ihre Wissenschaften in eine sich wechselseitig verstärkende Konkurrenz, die ihren Ausdruck in zahlreichen Debatten über die jeweilige Leitkunst findet.
