The Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) is a landmark large user-facility producing neutron and muon beams. Those beams feed over 20 beamlines hosting world-class instruments for the investigation of matter across the disciplines of materials science, solid state physics and chemistry, biological and life sciences, geology, engineering, and their wider applications. Neutron and muons can probe matter in very peculiar ways. They are sensitive to magnetism and hydrogen atoms, can penetrate materials deeply or probe surfaces, and allow one to investigate the fundamental dynamics of the materials. In the past three to four decades, neutron scattering has largely contributed to the development of modern technology, such as computers, mobile phone technology, electo-chemistry, the transportation industry, and the pharmaceutic industry. MLF is a world leader in such characterization technology and serves yearly to about 700 research experiments conducted from users of 34 countries around the world. The present book describes technical details of the proton accelerator, the neutron spallation source, the muon facility, and all the beamlines with engineering realization, specifications, and relevant examples.

The recent discovery of small and long non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) has represented a major breakthrough in the life sciences. These molecules add a new layer of complexity to biological processes and pathways by revealing a sophisticated and dynamic interconnected system whose structure is just beginning to be uncovered. Genetic and epigenetic aberrations affecting ncRNA gene sequences and their expression have been linked to a variety of pathological conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular and neurological diseases. Latest advances in the development of high throughput analysis techniques may help to shed light on the complex regulatory mechanisms in which ncRNA molecules are involved. Bioinformatics tools constitute a unique and essential resource for non-coding RNA studies, providing a powerful technology to organize, integrate and analyze the huge amount of data produced daily by wet biology experiments in order to discover patterns, identify relationships among heterogeneous biological elements and formulate functional hypotheses. In recent years, micro- and nanosystems with magnetic properties have been extensively investigated in many fields, ranging from physics to medicine. The research in these areas has lately shown that if the magnetic compounds are opportunely functionalized and modified with moieties and specific functional groups, a plethora of challenging multidisciplinary applications is available, including the development of magnetically controlled particles, stimuli-responsive materials, magnetically guided chemical/drug-delivery systems, sensors, spintronics, separation and purification of contaminated groundwater and soils, ferrofluids and magnetorheological fluids, contrast agents for MRI, and internal sources of heat for the thermoablation of cancer. Magnetic compounds have been found to be highly selective and effective in all these application fields, from the molecular level to the microscale. This book aims at underlining the latest advances in the field of magnetic compounds, nanosystems, and materials, covering a large variety of topics related to novel synthesis and functionalization methods and the properties, applications, and use of magnetic systems in chemistry, materials science, diagnostics, and medical therapy.

In the undulating plains of north-eastern Syria is the site of Tell Barri, identified with the city of Kahat. The archaeological sequence which has been brought to light stretches without interruption from the start of the third millennium up to the fourteenth century AD. This report records the results of the eighteenth excavation campaign, carried out by the group from the University of Florence and from the "Federico II" University of Naples. In Area G, the excavation of the chapel dating to the third millennium proceeded, bringing to light a palatine building that can be attributed to the Mid Assyrian King Adad-Nirari I. In Areas A and J, the Parthian, Hellenistic and Achemenidian layers were excavated up to the level of the Neo-Babylonian reoccupation of the Assyrian palace of Tukulti-Ninurta II. As regards the Parthian phase, investigation has proceeded on the Great Defensive Wall and on the large edifice in the lower city. The text, delivered for printing in July 2005, was published following the tragic death of Paolo Emilio Pecorella, which took place on 29 August in Tell Barri, in the course of the excavation campaign.Nelle ondulate pianure della Siria nord-orientale si trova il sito di Tell Barri, identificato con la città di Kahat. La sequenza archeologica portata alla luce va dall'inizio del III millennio sino al XIV secolo d.C, senza soluzione di continuità. La presente relazione dà ragione dei risultati della diciottesima campagna di scavo ad opera del gruppo dell'Università di Firenze e dell'Università 'Federico II' di Napoli. Nell'Area G è proseguito lo scavo del sacello del III millennio e si è messo in luce un edificio palatino attribuibile al re medio assiro Adad-Nirari I; nelle Aree A e J sono stati scavati gli strati partici, ellenistici ed achemenidi, sino al livello della rioccupazione neobabilonese del palazzo assiro di Tukulti-Ninurta II. Per la fase partica è proseguita l'indagine sia del Grande Muro di Difesa sia del grande edificio della città bassa. Il testo, consegnato per la stampa a luglio del 2005, vede la luce dopo la tragica scomparsa di Paolo Emilio Pecorella, avvenuta il 29 agosto a Tell Barri, nel corso della campagna di scavo.

Portuguese cinema in the speech of political power is a dictionary about portuguese cinematografic legislation (1896-1974), since the existence of moving images in Portugal (1896), till 1974, passing through three political regims, wich are the end of Constitutional Monarchy (1896-1910), the First Republic (1910-1926), and The New State (1933-1974). The dictionary contains 123 entries, which are based on six global subjects: (1) The political power and inspective organs (11 entries); (2) The cinema between education and propaganda (12 entries); (3) Criteria, process and organs of censorship (14 entries); (4) The industry, the economic agents and the State (38 entries); (5) The cinematographic show (31 entries); (6) The professional and the sector organs (17 entries). Portuguese cinema in the speech of political power is the first sistematic research about the way as political powers rule the cinematographic activity in Portugal, through a sistematic and continuous source as legislation is, that is understood as a speech through which political power expresses his normative will.

Angesichts der Vielfältigkeit des deutschen Bildungssystems erscheint es fraglich, die Entwicklung der Lohnstruktur lediglich anhand durchschnittlicher, meist semiparametrisch geschätzter Bildungsrenditen zu beurteilen. Die Arbeit konzentriert sich daher im theoretischen Teil auf die systematische Darstellung und Diskussion neuerer nichtparametrischer Verfahren zur Schätzung von Bildungsrenditen. Anhand von Daten des Deutschen Instituts für Wirtschaftsforschung (DIW) für den Zeitraum 1984-2000 werden im empirischen Teil die Ergebnisse traditioneller und ausgewählter Verfahren neueren Verfahren kritisch gegenübergestellt. Es zeigt sich, dass nichtparametrisch geschätzte Bildungsrenditen wertvolle Zusatzinformationen liefern und somit ein differenzierteres Bild der Entwicklung der Lohnstruktur ermöglichen.
