Since the growth of social media, human communication has become much more visual. This book presents a scholarly analysis of the images people post on a regular basis to Facebook. By including hundreds of examples, readers can see for themselves the differences between postings from a village north of London, and those from a small town in Trinidad. Why do women respond so differently to becoming a mother in England from the way they do in Trinidad? How are values such as carnival and suburbia expressed visually? Based on an examination of over 20,000 images, the authors argue that phenomena such as selfies and memes must be analysed in their local context. The book aims to highlight the importance of visual images today in patrolling and controlling the moral values of populations, and explores the changing role of photography from that of recording and representation, to that of communication, where an image not only documents an experience but also enhances it, making the moment itself more exciting.

Wie und wo entsteht kulturwissenschaftliches Wissen? Im Kopf? In der Bibliothek? Am Schreibtisch? Inspiriert von den Laborstudien der Science & Technology Studies ging das Autor*innen-Kollektiv des vorliegenden Buchs diesen Fragen nach. Aufgesucht wurden die persönlichen Schreiborte von Kulturwissenschaftler*innen verschiedener Disziplinen. In ihren Beiträgen eröffnen die Autor*innen vielfältige Perspektiven auf bislang kaum erforschte Praktiken kulturwissenschaftlicher Wissensproduktion. Hierdurch wird ein komplexes Zusammenspiel technisch-materieller, praktischer, medialer, sozialer, institutioneller, ökonomischer, politischer und ideeller Dimensionen in den Werkstätten kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschens freigelegt. Die Ergebnisse der interdisziplinär angelegten und kollaborativ erarbeiteten Studien liefern überraschende Einsichten und eröffnen weiterführende Forschungsfragen: ein Plädoyer für eine reflexive, kollaborativ-interdisziplinäre Wissenschaftspraxis.

This book presents collective works published in the recent Special Issue (SI) entitled "Aero/Hydrodynamics and Symmetry". These works address the existence of symmetry and its breakdown in aero-/hydro-dynamics and their related applications. The presented problems are complex nonlinear, non-Newtonian fluid flow problems that are (in some cases) coupled with heat transfer, phase change, nanofluidic, and magnetohydrodynamics phenomena. The applications vary and range from polymer chain transfer in micro-channel to the evaluation of vertical axis wind turbines, as well as autonomous underwater hovering vehicles. Recent advances in numerical, theoretical, and experimental methodologies, as well as finding new physics, new methodological developments, and their limitations are presented within the scope of the current book. Among others, in the presented works, special attention is paid to validation and improving the accuracy of the presented methodologies. This book brings together a collection of inter-/multi-disciplinary works applied to many engineering applications in a coherent manner.

Die Finanzkraftmesszahl erfüllt im kommunalen Finanzausgleich -genau wie die Bedarfsmesszahl- zentrale Steuerungsfunktionen. Allerdings wird ihre Objektivität in Zweifel gezogen, weil sie die Einnahmemöglichkeiten der Gemeinden offensichtlich nicht genau wiedergibt. Die vorliegende Arbeit unterzieht deshalb die Verfahren der Finanzkraftmessung in den Bundesländern einer grundsätzlichen Überprüfung und vergleicht sie mit Messkonzeptionen, die bei der gemeindlichen Kalkulation von Einnahmemöglichkeiten im Rahmen der Haushaltsplanung zugrunde gelegt werden könnten. Die Gegenüberstellung zeigt, dass kommunaler Finanzausgleich und gemeindliche Haushaltsplanung völlig verschiedene Zwecke verfolgen und die angewendeten Messkonzepte nicht nach den gleichen Kriterien bewertet werden dürfen.

This book, newly available in paperback, argues for greater openness in the ways we approach human rights and international rights promotion, and in so doing brings some new understanding to old debates. Starting with the realities of abuse rather than the liberal architecture of rights, it casts human rights as a language for probing the political dimensions of suffering. Seen in this context, the predominant Western models of rights generate a substantial but also problematic and not always emancipatory array of practices. These models are far from answering the questions about the nature of political community that are raised by the systemic infliction of suffering. Rather than a simple message from 'us' to 'them', then, rights promotion is a long and difficult conversation about the relationship between political organisations and suffering. Three case studies are explored - the Tiananmen Square massacre, East Timor's violent modern history and the circumstances of indigenous Australians. The purpose of these discussions is not to elaborate on a new theory of rights, but to work towards rights practices that are more responsive to the spectrum of injury that we inflict and endure. The book is a valuable and innovative contribution to rights debates for students of international politics, political theory, and conflict resolution, as well as for those engaged in the pursuit of human rights.
