This thesis aims to contribute to the geomorphological and geo-ecological knowledge of the Schist Mountains in the western sector of the Portuguese Central Range. This second part, the current one, focuses on the role played by man, as the main responsible agent for the evolution of the slopes over the last millennium, in which the construction of agricultural fields is emphasized. The first part of this research deals with the geomorphological analysis and is developed in three chapters: the morpho-structural framework, the landforms and the alluvial deposits, respectively. The second part, centred in the quantification of processes, is more focused on the environment and shows more geo-ecological concerns. It corresponds to chapters fourth and fifth; the former is dedicated to the hydro-climatology, which is the main agent of the morphogenesis and of the recent and current evolution of the slopes , whilst the latter addresses the human intervention and the ecosystems changes.

The chronicles of Gowa and Talloq are the most important historical sources for the study of pre-colonial Makassar. They have provided the basic framework and much of the information that we possess about the origins, growth, and expansion of Gowa during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. During this period Gowa and its close ally Talloq became the most powerful force in the eastern Indonesian archipelago, and historians have relied heavily on the chronicles to chart the developments of this period. La corrida et le rodéo, les deux seuls affrontements homme-bovin mondialement connus, sont de lointains cousins dont les relations historiques et formelles interrogent les processus de transformation de la culture entre l'Europe et l'Amérique. Cette étude de géographie culturelle envisage toutes les pratiques tauromachiques, des courses de taureaux du sud-ouest européen à l'immense famille des rodéos nord et sud-américains. Les jeux, les fêtes et les spectacles sont analysés comme des marqueurs territoriaux et comme des moyens d'expression identitaire qui prennent forme et signification les uns par rapport aux autres. Il en résulte une mosaïque territoriale complexe où les relations homme-bovin véhiculent des sentiments d'appartenance dont les clivages et les solidarités s'expriment à l'échelle d'une aire culturelle transatlantique.
