May 5th, 2001, Lambano opened its doors. Twelve tiny souls, each carrying stories of loss and resilience, newfound love, safety, and a place to call home. Lambano Sanctuary was one of the first NGO’s to practice paediatric palliative care in South Africa. Over the years we’ve gone from admitting hundreds of abandoned children, to permanently housing over 30 HIV positive children, who were loved and provided with safety and security. Since the year 2009, Lambano Sanctuary entered into full-time medical & palliative care and have since admitted over 700 patients’ with over 50 000 unique interventions, and over 156 interventions for the year 2024 alone. While there have been no material changes to the nature of our services, we developed a self-sustainable private model to fund our NGO; a new private Children’s Sub-Acute facility at an estimate cost of 45m. We project the construction completion to be June 2025 see page 9. Thus, providing additional funding to both sustain and eventually increase the number of public patients we admit at the Sanctuary. Yet again we will be at the forefront, pioneering with the only dedicated Children’s Sub- Acute Facility in South Africa. I invite you to delve into the following pages of this report to discover the milestones, achievements, and exciting prospects that define Lambano. L i t t l e In early 2024, two-year-old Khanyi’s life changed in an instant. A devastating electrical burn left her tiny face scarred, her body fragile, and her spirit shaken. When Khanyi arrived at Lambano, the effects of her injuries were heartbreaking. She couldn’t crawl, eat, or even engage with the world around her. W ith unwavering dedication, the Lambano team provided Khanyi with specialized medical care, nutrition, and therapy tailored to her recovery. Slowly, the transformation began. First, a flicker of movement. Then, a newfound strength, and one day, she crawled an achievement that left her caregivers in awe, knowing how far she had come. Today, Khanyi’s laughter fills the halls of Lambano. She not only walks but can now run! A brave milestone for a little life. At Lambano Sanctuary, miracles happen every day and Khanyi is one of them. “Khanyi was transferred from Charlotte Maxeke Hospital to Lambano Sanctuary a place where healing goes beyond medicine, where love and care wrap around each child like a warm embrace”. Meet Khanyi Holistic Care Homes Lambano.org.za Page 14 Home Performance 2024 Annual Report Lambano Sanctuary was birthed in response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa. We opened 4 Children’s Homes, permanently caring for orphans. We ensured that everyone had permanent employment, and we assisted them with finding accommodation and furnishings to move into independence. Lambano.org.za Alongside 3 House Mothers and 30 little children, we managed school parent meetings, logistics, Dr's visits, therapy, playtime and paperwork for all 30 children. Till today we know their routines, fears, joys and dreams. Over the years we fought to give them a childhood they wouldn’t need to recover from. Today, we can proudly say that 1 of our children is still attending Highschool, 3 children have pursued Tertiary studies; 8 Young Adults have gone on to be independent and 3 of our Young Adults require on-going support. As mothers we are proud of our children, but cannot shake the saddened reality that many of our children have disabilities due to their HIV/AIDS diagnosis and how it affected their development in their formative years. Some children suffer blindness, delayed cognitive development, Behavioural disorders etc. We remain hopeful however, that our children will continue to pursue their goals and dreams despite this hardship. We foster our children, and their 23 3 Highschool Independent & employed Tertiary Studies Require Support Home Performance 2024 Annual Report Page 16 ”I remember my first day at Lambano Sanctuary in the year 2005.
