This open access book deals with contestations “from below” of legal policies and implementation practices in asylum and deportation. Consequently, it covers three types of mobilization: solidarity protests against the deportation of refused asylum seekers, refugee activism campaigning for residence rights and inclusion, and restrictive protests against the reception of asylum seekers. By applying both a longitudinal analysis of protest events and a series of in-depth case studies in three immigration countries, this edited volume provides comparative insights into these three types of movement in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland over a time span of twenty-five years. Embedded in concepts of political change, limited state sovereignty, and migration control, the findings shed light on actors, repertoires, and the effects of protest activities. The contributions illustrate how local contexts, national political settings, issue specifics, and social ties lead to distinctly different forms of protest emergence, dynamics, and strategies. Additionally, they give a profound understanding of the mechanisms and constellations that contribute to protest success, both in terms of preventing deportations of individuals as well as changing policies. In sum, this book constitutes a major contribution to empirically informed theoretical reflections on collective contestation in the fields of refugee studies and social protest movements.

When possible some hints have been provided about the personalities of the scientists themselves. It is especially meant both for biologists and naturalists, but an attempt has been made to make it interesting reading also for any layman with an interest in history and sciences.

Beauvoir in Time situates Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex in the historical context of its writing and in later contexts of its international reception, from then till now. The book takes up three aspects of Beauvoir's work more recent feminists find embarrassing: "bad sex," "dated" views about lesbians, and intersections with race and class. Through close reading of Beauvoir's writing in many genres, alongside contemporaneous discourses (good and bad novels in French and English, outmoded psychoanalytic and sexological authorities, ethnographic surrealism, the writing of Richard Wright and Franz Fanon), and in light of her travels to the U.S. and China, the author uncovers insights more recent feminist methodologies obscure, showing that Beauvoir is still good to think with today. Readership: Important to scholars of Beauvoir and existentialism, whether based in philosophy or literary studies, also accessible to those without specialized knowledge but interested in feminism in 20th century and today.

Kierkegaard’s psychological thought has always been acknowledged as very rich—Reinhold Niebuhr hailed him as the greatest psychologist of the soul since Augustine—and has had a major influence on Heidegger, Sartre, and existential psychoanalysis. Nevertheless, his accomplishment has not always been fully appreciated, in part because it is so scattered across his works. As Vincent McCarthy demonstrates in Kierkegaard as Psychologist, Kierkegaard was pursuing “psychology” before there was a formally recognized academic field bearing that name, and a coherent thread runs through the so-called pseudonymous works. Luftverkehr und Banken gehören in den USA zu jenen Bereichen, die vor der Weltwirtschaftskrise durch intensiven Wettbewerb gekennzeichnet waren. Sie wurden in den 30er Jahren in ein engmaschiges Regulierungsnetz eingebunden, das als Substitut für den wettbewerblichen Koordinierungsmechanismus dienen sollte. Seit den 60er Jahren wurden die Schwächen staatlicher Eingriffe in die Wirtschaft immer deutlicher, was in den USA Mitte der 70er Jahre zu einer von Ökonomen, Politikern, Juristen und Verbraucherschützern getragenen Gegenbewegung (Deregulation Policy) führte, die im Luftverkehrs- und Bankensektor durch Intensivierung des Wettbewerbs sehr erfolgreich war und daher ein Beispiel für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland und Europa sein sollte.

Durch die über eine Stichprobenerweiterung ermöglichte Teilnahme an ICILS 2018 (International Computer and Information Literacy Study) als sogenannter Benchmark-Teilnehmer werden erstmals für Nordrhein-Westfalen im nationalen und internationalen Vergleich die computer- und informationsbezogenen Kompetenzen sowie Kompetenzen im Bereich ‚Computational Thinking‘ von Achtklässlerinnen und Achtklässlern untersucht. Diese Publikation stellt erste Ergebnisse für Nordrhein-Westfalen zu den vorgenannten Kompetenzbereichen dar, differenziert hier vertiefend nach Schulformen und individuellen Schülermerkmalen. Weiterhin werden erste Analysen zu den Rahmenbedingungen des Kompetenzerwerbes für Nordrhein-Westfalen im nationalen und internationalen Vergleich zur Verfügung gestellt. Dazu gehören als schulische Voraussetzungen Befunde zur IT-Ausstattung sowie zum technischen und pädagogischen IT-Support. Weitere Schwerpunkte der hier vorgelegten ersten Ergebnisse von ICILS 2018-NRW liegen auf Befunden zu schulischen Prozessen wie den Erwartungen der Schulleitungen, den Einschätzungen der Lehrkräfte sowie Befunde zur Teilnahme an Lehrerfortbildungen. Ferner werden Ergebnisse zur schulischen Nutzung digitaler Medien durch verschiedene Akteure vorgestellt. Die Broschüre wendet sich im Kontext aktueller Digitalisierungsprozesse an eine an der Entwicklung von Schule und Unterricht interessierte Leserschaft in Nordrhein-Westfalen und darüber hinaus.
