Sowohl in der Wissenschaft als auch in der Unternehmenspraxis wird die langfristige Bindung von Kunden verstärkt als kritischer Erfolgsfaktor identifiziert und entsprechend intensiv diskutiert. Fragen, die in diesem Zusammenhang aufgeworfen werden, sind: «Welche Größen beeinflussen die Kundenbindung?», «Welche Instrumente können zur Bindung der Kunden eingesetzt werden?», «Welche Kunden können mit dem Einsatz welcher Bindungsinstrumente bearbeitet werden, um einen effektiven und effizienten Einsatz der Mittel zu gewährleisten?» Insbesondere in Mitgliedschaftssystemen steht die Kundenbindungsforschung diesbezüglich vielfach noch in den Anfängen. Vor diesem Hintergrund leistet die Arbeit mit der Identifikation von sieben signifikanten Determinanten der Kundenbindung und Gestaltungsempfehlungen eines kundenwertorientierten Bindungsmanagements einen umfassenden Beitrag zur Erklärung und Steuerung der Kundenbindung in Mitgliedschaftssystemen. Das theoriegestützte Konzept erfährt dabei eine fundierte empirische Überprüfung auf der Basis einer Befragung von 531 Mitgliedern eines Mitgliedschaftssystems.

From Bricks to Brains introduces embodied cognitive science, and illustrates its foundational ideas through the construction and observation of LEGO Mindstorms robots. Discussing the characteristics that distinguish embodied cognitive science from classical cognitive science, From Bricks to Brains places a renewed emphasis on sensing and acting, the importance of embodiment, the exploration of distributed notions of control, and the development of theories by synthesizing simple systems and exploring their behaviour. Numerous examples are used to illustrate a key theme: the importance of an agent’s environment. Even simple agents, such as LEGO robots, are capable of exhibiting complex behaviour when they can sense and affect the world around them.

Animals and Medicine: The Contribution of Animal Experiments to the Control of Disease offers a detailed, scholarly historical review of the critical role animal experiments have played in advancing medical knowledge. Laboratory animals have been essential to this progress, and the knowledge gained has saved countless lives—both human and animal. Unfortunately, those opposed to using animals in research have often employed doctored evidence to suggest that the practice has impeded medical progress. This volume presents the articles Jack Botting wrote for the Research Defence Society News from 1991 to 1996, papers which provided scientists with the information needed to rebut such claims. Collected, they can now reach a wider readership interested in understanding the part of animal experiments in the history of medicine—from the discovery of key vaccines to the advancement of research on a range of diseases, among them hypertension, kidney failure and cancer. This book is essential reading for anyone curious about the role of animal experimentation in the history of science from the nineteenth century to the present.

The challenge of this interdisciplinary research on sustainable bioenergy production in rural areas is how to reconcile the chances and risks of bioenergy production within the context of climate stabilization, resource conservation, biodiversity, water, air, and soil preservation, the interests of society and of farmers. To answer this we developed and improved evaluation criteria and methods for a bioenergy implementation in rural areas. We show that the problems arising from energy plant production such as monoculture, changes of landscape and land use competition, loss of biodiversity, costs, social denial etc. may be eliminated during workshops with the main stakeholders (farmers, technicians, policymakers, administration, ecologists etc.) as well as with interested people. We created some tools to facilitate decision-making and consensus building. Especially the decision behaviour of farmers for or against bioenergy is investigated. Some results from our field research: Energy plants may increase the richness in species on farmland. Contaminated areas should be utilised to grow energy plants with low extraction efficiency for pollutants. Emissions from wood and straw burning can be strongly minimised.In einem interdisziplinären Ansatz werden die Chancen und Risiken der Bioenergie im Kontext einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung beleuchtet. Es werden Schwierigkeiten und Wege zu ihrer Überwindung aufgezeigt, wie die Produktion und die energetische Nutzung der Biomasse mit den Anforderungen des Klimaschutzes, der Biodiversität, des Landschaftsschutzes sowie der Nahrungsmittelversorgung aber auch mit ökonomischen Aspekten in Einklang zu bringen ist. Die teilweise konträren Argumente müssen in gemeinsamen Beratungen abgewogen werden, eine Basis für die Akzeptanz bei den Akteuren und der Bevölkerung. Es werden Werkzeuge zur Entscheidungsunterstützung und Lösungsansätze zur Problemminimierung auf lokaler wie regionaler Ebene vorgestellt. Es wird beispielweise gezeigt, wie Energiepflanzen zum Artenreichtum beitragen können, wie die Akteure konsensorientiert zusammengeführt und Dorfbewohner in Entscheidungen integriert werden können, aber auch welche ökonomischen Folgen für die Landwirte und die regionale Wertschöpfung resultieren. Es wird angeregt, auf belasteten Flächen Energiepflanzen anzubauen, die wenig Schadstoffe aufnehmen. Weiterhin wird gezeigt, wie Emissionen von Schadstoffen bei der Verbrennung von Biomasse minimiert werden können.

Cardiac biomarkers such as troponins and natiuretic peptides have made a great impact on clinical decision making as well as improving our understanding of molecular mechanisms of different disease conditions. However, the biomarkers that are currently in use do not reflect all the multiple disease pathways that are involved in a broad spectrum of cardiac disease conditions ranging from acute coronary syndrome, to heart failure (and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, HFpEF), to pulmonary hypertension or arrhythmias. In this Special Issue, we will provide an overview of the current developments in the field of biomarker research, beginning with research on molecular pathways and cellular communication (e.g., microRNA) up to the clinical use of biomarkers.

Nach einem grundlegenden Referat über den Begriff der medizinischen Innovation folgen Beiträge über Arzneimittelinnovationen aus der jeweiligen Sicht der Kassenärzte, der Krankenkassen und der pharmazeutischen Industrie. Die Arbeitsgruppen diskutieren medizinisch-pharmakologische Anforderungen an Arzneimittelinnovationen, ihre Finanzierung unter einem Budgetdeckel und die solidarischen Grenzen des GKV-Arzneimittelkataloges. Ein Resümee faßt dann Übereinstimmungen und divergierende Meinungen zusammen.

Food processing by humans goes a long way back in time, e.g., heat for cooking was used 1.9 million years ago. However, meal preparation now seems to be moving out of the home kitchen, and preprocessed or processed/convenience food products are becoming a larger part of the daily diet. In addition, consumers are progressively focusing on the impact of food on their health, and they demand foods that have a high nutritional quality and an aroma and natural flavor that are similar to freshly-made products. Therefore, nutritional quality is concurrent with food safety, and sensory perception is becoming an increasingly important factor in food choices. The human digestive tract disintegrates food to allow the nutrients to be released and made available to the body. However, nutrients can undergo unwanted degradation upon processing and subsequent storage, negatively influencing the physiological effects. Different processing techniques will result in different food structures, thereby also affecting bioaccessibility and nutritional value. Hence, food scientists and industry have an increased interest in both conventional and innovative processing methods that can provide good-quality products with high nutritional value and stable shelf life. This Special Issue aims to shed some light on the latest knowledge about and developments within the effects of food processing and storage on changes of biochemical and nutritional compounds. Both original research articles and reviews are included in this book.

C'est peu dire que le libéralisme politique et, plus encore, les partis libéraux en Europe ont été peu étudiés par la communauté scientifique. Comparé aux formations socialistes, communistes, d'extrême droite et, plus récemment, écologistes, les partis libéraux sont à l'évidence un des parents pauvres de la littérature scientifique dans les recherches portant sur les acteurs politiques. Une recherche bibliographique sommaire suffirait à l'établir. Pourtant, le libéralisme politique fut la doctrine de référence dans l'avènement de l'État parlementaire puis de la démocratie parlementaire, au XIXe et au XXe siècles. Dans plusieurs sociétés européennes, les organisations et partis libéraux jouèrent un rôle clé dans la transition des monarchies absolues vers le constitutionnalisme. Dans la période contemporaine, plusieurs formations libérales furent des partis pivots cruciaux dans leur système politique national. Une des ambitions de ce livre est donc de contribuer aux lacunes criantes des travaux consacrés à l'espace politique du centre-droit et, singulièrement, aux partis libéraux. Pour ce faire, l'ouvrage rassemble des contributions de spécialistes internationaux qui étudient l'histoire du libéralisme politique, ses caractéristiques et ses évolutions. Ils examinent aussi l'essence des partis libéraux européens dans la période contemporaine : leur mutation idéologique, leur parcours électoral, leur performance politique et leur situation actuelle.
