Aging is a major risk factor for chronic diseases, which in turn can provide information about the aging of a biological system. This publication serves as an introduction to systems biology and its application to biological aging. Key pathways and processes that impinge on aging are reviewed, and how they contribute to health and disease during aging is discussed. The evolution of this situation is analyzed, and the consequences for the study of genetic effects on aging are presented. Epigenetic programming of aging, as a continuation of development, creates an interface between the genome and the environment. New research into the gut microbiome describes how this interface may operate in practice with marked consequences for a variety of disorders. This analysis is bolstered by a view of the aging organism as a whole, with conclusions about the mechanisms underlying resilience of the organism to change, and is expanded with a discussion of circadian rhythms in aging.This book is made open access as part of the Knowledge Unlatched KU Select 2018: STEM Backlist Books

Assessing the transformation of Russian nationalist discourse in the 21st century Russian nationalism, previously dominated by imperial tendencies pride in a large, strong and multi-ethnic state able to project its influence abroad is increasingly focused on ethnic issues. This new ethno-nationalism has come in various guises, like racism and xenophobia, but also in a new intellectual movement of national democracy deliberately seeking to emulate conservative West European nationalism. Russias annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the subsequent violent conflict in Eastern Ukraine utterly transformed the nationalist discourse in Russia. This book provides an up-to-date survey of Russian nationalism as a political, social and intellectual phenomenon by leading Western and Russian experts in the field of nationalism studies. Die spätmittelalterliche und frühneuzeitliche Geschichtsschreibung ist ein zentrales Experimentierfeld der Historiografie, in das die hier ausgewählten und präsentierten Beispiele Einblicke vermitteln. Die damit angebotene Neustrukturierung des historiografischen Feldes geht weit über das hinaus, was die Historiografiegeschichtsschreibung des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts herausgestellt hat, und erweitert den Horizont über die Konstrukte moderner Geschichtswissenschaft hinaus erheblich.Dieses Quellenhandbuch richtet sich an ein interdisziplinäres, universitäres Publikum: an fortgeschrittene Studierende und Promovierende und an Lehrende für die Verwendung im Unterricht oder an Forscher/innen, die sich über die neueren Tendenzen auf dem Gebiet der Historiografiegeschichte informieren wollen. Catechols are widely found in nature taking part in a variety of biological functions, ranging from the aqueous adhesion of marine organisms to the storage of transition metal ions. Catechol-based natural and biomimetic molecules have thus been the focus of intense research aimed at mimicking and translating this nature-inspired chemistry into new functional materials and systems with tailored properties. The aim of this book is to present a concise survey of the state-of-the-art of basic and applied research on bioinspired catechol systems. The Complaints Mechanism report offers an overview of its actions in 2019. The main role of the Complaints Mechanism (EIB-CM) is to listen to citizens’ concerns about an EIB Group project or activity, which can be about a wide range of issues. A large proportion of the complaints are about environmental and social impacts of EIB financed projects. In 2019, the EIB-CM registered 84 new cases, handled 173 cases and closed 113 of them. A number of highly complex cases were closed, including the Panama Canal Extension, Marišćina County Waste Management, Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant, and Reventazon Hydropower. This Activity Report describes these cases and other closed and ongoing cases. The report also covers the cases lodged with the European Ombudsman against the EIB Group. The report aims at giving a good idea of how the EIB-CM activities ensure the EIB Group remains accountable to the public.
