Food processing by humans goes a long way back in time, e.g., heat for cooking was used 1.9 million years ago. However, meal preparation now seems to be moving out of the home kitchen, and preprocessed or processed/convenience food products are becoming a larger part of the daily diet. In addition, consumers are progressively focusing on the impact of food on their health, and they demand foods that have a high nutritional quality and an aroma and natural flavor that are similar to freshly-made products. Therefore, nutritional quality is concurrent with food safety, and sensory perception is becoming an increasingly important factor in food choices. The human digestive tract disintegrates food to allow the nutrients to be released and made available to the body. However, nutrients can undergo unwanted degradation upon processing and subsequent storage, negatively influencing the physiological effects. Different processing techniques will result in different food structures, thereby also affecting bioaccessibility and nutritional value. Hence, food scientists and industry have an increased interest in both conventional and innovative processing methods that can provide good-quality products with high nutritional value and stable shelf life. This Special Issue aims to shed some light on the latest knowledge about and developments within the effects of food processing and storage on changes of biochemical and nutritional compounds. Both original research articles and reviews are included in this book.

C'est peu dire que le libéralisme politique et, plus encore, les partis libéraux en Europe ont été peu étudiés par la communauté scientifique. Comparé aux formations socialistes, communistes, d'extrême droite et, plus récemment, écologistes, les partis libéraux sont à l'évidence un des parents pauvres de la littérature scientifique dans les recherches portant sur les acteurs politiques. Une recherche bibliographique sommaire suffirait à l'établir. Pourtant, le libéralisme politique fut la doctrine de référence dans l'avènement de l'État parlementaire puis de la démocratie parlementaire, au XIXe et au XXe siècles. Dans plusieurs sociétés européennes, les organisations et partis libéraux jouèrent un rôle clé dans la transition des monarchies absolues vers le constitutionnalisme. Dans la période contemporaine, plusieurs formations libérales furent des partis pivots cruciaux dans leur système politique national. Une des ambitions de ce livre est donc de contribuer aux lacunes criantes des travaux consacrés à l'espace politique du centre-droit et, singulièrement, aux partis libéraux. Pour ce faire, l'ouvrage rassemble des contributions de spécialistes internationaux qui étudient l'histoire du libéralisme politique, ses caractéristiques et ses évolutions. Ils examinent aussi l'essence des partis libéraux européens dans la période contemporaine : leur mutation idéologique, leur parcours électoral, leur performance politique et leur situation actuelle.

This book discusses the common principles of morality and ethics derived from divinely endowed intuitive reason through the creation of al-fitr' a (nature) and human intellect (al-‘aql). Biomedical topics are presented and ethical issues related to topics such as genetic testing, assisted reproduction and organ transplantation are discussed.Whereas these natural sources are God’s special gifts to human beings, God’s revelation as given to the prophets is the supernatural source of divine guidance through which human communities have been guided at all times through history. The second part of the book concentrates on the objectives of Islamic religious practice – the maqa' sid – which include: Preservation of Faith, Preservation of Life, Preservation of Mind (intellect and reason), Preservation of Progeny (al-nasl) and Preservation of Property. Lastly, the third part of the book discusses selected topical issues, including abortion, assisted reproduction devices, genetics, organ transplantation, brain death and end-of-life aspects. For each topic, the current medical evidence is followed by a detailed discussion of the ethical issues involved.

Diese Reihe wird seit 1996 im Sinne Gustav Weigands in neuer Folge fortgesetzt, beginnend mit dem unveränderten Nachdruck der kommentierten Ausgabe der „Zweiundsiebzig Lieder des bulgarischen Volkes" von Gerhard Gesemann. Neben Fachbüchern und wissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen steht in dieser Reihe auch bulgarische Literatur in deutscher Übersetzung im Mittelpunkt. This collection of essays studies the encounter between allegedly ahistorical concepts of narratology and eighteenth-century literature. It questions whether the general concepts of narratology are as such applicable to historically specific fields, or whether they need further specification. Furthermore, at issue is the question whether the theoretical concepts actually are, despite their appearance of ahistorical generality, derived from the historical study of a particular period and type of literature. In the essays such concepts as genre, plot, character, event, tellability, perspective, temporality, description, reading, metadiegetic narration, and paratext are scrutinized in the context of eighteenth-century texts. The writers include some of the leading theorists of both narratology and eighteenth-century literature.

Heartbreak House: A Fantasia in the Russian Manner on English Themes is a play written by George Bernard Shaw, first published in 1919 and first played at the Garrick Theatre in November 1920. According to A. C. Ward, the work argues that "cultured, leisured Europe" was drifting toward destruction, and that "Those in a position to guide Europe to safety failed to learn their proper business of political navigation".
