Causation and Laws of Nature

CC BY-NC-ND

This is the first Eng translation of Causalite´ et Lois de La Nature, and is an important contribution to the theory of causation. Max Kistler reconstructs a unified concept of causation that is general enough to adequately deal with both elementary physical processes, and the macroscopic level of phenomena we encounter in everyday life. This book will be of great interest to philosophers of science and metaphysics, and also to students and scholars of philosophy of mind where concepts of causation and law play a prominent role.

The Man from Snowy River

A. B. (Andrew Barton) Paterson

PD-US

One of the most famous poems in Australian literature, The Man from Snowy River was first published in The Bulletin, on 26 April 1890. The poem tells the story of a chase to recapture a valuable colt. 'The Man' - who is not identified by name - rides down a suicidally steep slope to rescue the horse, collect the reward money and become a local hero. It is thought that the character of The Man from Snowy River was based on Jack Riley from Corryong, although a strong case has been made that 'the Man' is a composite character from a number of people Paterson met. The poem was written at a time when there was a groundswell of sentiment towards Australia as a new and distinct nation apart from the British Empire, and the bush settings and characters in poems by Paterson and Henry Lawson served to emphasise the growing 'difference' in national identity. Several films, a television series and a musical have been made from the story, proof of its enduring power to captivate Australia ns to this day.

Computation and the Humanities: Towards an Oral History of Digital Humanities

CC BY-NC

This book addresses the application of computing to cultural heritage and the discipline of Digital Humanities that formed around it. Digital Humanities research is transforming how the Human record can be transmitted, shaped, understood, questioned and imagined and it has been ongoing for more than 70 years. However, we have no comprehensive histories of its research trajectory or its disciplinary development. The authors make a first contribution towards remedying this by uncovering, documenting, and analysing a number of the social, intellectual and creative processes that helped to shape this research from the 1950s until the present day. By taking an oral history approach, this book explores questions like, among others, researchers earliest memories of encountering computers and the factors that subsequently prompted them to use the computer in Humanities research. Computation and the Humanities will be an essential read for cultural and computing historians, digital humanists and those interested in developments like the digitisation of cultural heritage and artefacts.

Alnouri's work explores the human condition in a state of displacement, suspended in a third space between heritage and rootlessness. The artist draws from her family's mixed Iraqi-Kuwaiti heritage, personal experiences of her family's displacement during the Gulf War (1990-1) and the forces compelling the migration of peoples throughout time.

Alethia

CC BY

In the context of Christian paraphrastic poetry, the Claudio Mario Vittorio’s Alethia is a significant example of the synthesis between the classical and the Christian world during the Late antiquity. The work, probably composed in the first half of the 5th century, is a hexametric rewrite in three books, preceded by a Precatio, of the first 19 chapters of Genesis book, from the creation of the world to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. This essay offers to the reader the translation and commentary of the Precatio and the first book of the poem. It aims to highlight the complex cultural plot of the text and, at the same time, analysing, with a predominantly intertextual approach, the paraphrasing procedures adopted by Claudio Mario Vittorio in the verse of biblical narrative. Moreover, the volume aims to give a proper account of a paraphrastic poem that deals in an admirable manner sacred history, biblical exegesis and tradition.

The Legitimacy of Modern Democracy

CC BY-NC-ND

By re-examining the political thought of Max Weber, Carl Schmitt and Hans Kelsen, this book offers a reflection on the nature of modern democracy and the question of its legitimacy. Pedro T. Magalhães shows that present-day elitist, populist and pluralist accounts of democracy owe, in diverse and often complicated ways, an intellectual debt to the interwar era, German-speaking, scholarly and political controversies on the problem(s) of modern democracy. A discussion of Weber’s ambivalent diagnosis of modernity and his elitist views on democracy, as they were elaborated especially in the 1910s, sets the groundwork for the study. Against that backdrop, Schmitt’s interwar political thought is interpreted as a form of neo-authoritarian populism, whereas Kelsen evinces robust, though not entirely unproblematic, pluralist consequences. In the conclusion, the author draws on Claude Lefort’s concept of indeterminacy to sketch a potentially more fruitful way than can be gleaned from the interwar German discussions of conceiving the nexus between the elitist, populist and pluralist faces of modern democracy. The Legitimacy of Modern Democracy will be of interest to political theorists, political philosophers, intellectual historians, theoretically oriented political scientists, and legal scholars working in the subfields of constitutional law and legal theory.

The Iron Heel

Jack London

PD-US

The soft summer wind stirs the redwoods, and Wild-Water ripples sweet cadences over its mossy stones. There are butterflies in the sunshine, and from everywhere arises the drowsy hum of bees. It is so quiet and peaceful, and I sit here, and ponder, and am restless. It is the quiet that makes me restless. It seems unreal. All the world is quiet, but it is the quiet before the storm. I strain my ears, and all my senses, for some betrayal of that impending storm. Oh, that it may not be premature! That it may not be premature!* * The Second Revolt was largely the work of Ernest Everhard, though he cooperated, of course, with the European leaders. The capture and secret execution of Everhard was the great event of the spring of 1932 A.D. Yet so thoroughly had he prepared for the revolt, that his fellow-conspirators were able, with little confusion or delay, to carry out his plans. It was after Everhard's execution that his wife went to Wake Robin Lodge, a small bungalow in the Sonoma Hills of California.

Yeats e la cultura italiana

CC BY-NC-ND

W. B. Yeats e la cultura italiana examines the "Italianism" of William Butler Yeats and the popularity of the Irish poet in Italian poetry and criticism. Appraising the presence and evocative influence of "learned Italian things" on the work of the Irish poet, through the study of his letters and as illustrated by the library conserved by his daughter Anne, and with constant references to the texts themselves, the Italian influences most evidently present in the work of the Irish Nobel winner are analysed and discussed. This first section of the book presents in its entirety the largely unpublished correspondence between Years and the philosopher Mario Manlio Rossi. Subsequently, observing the influence and the fascination exerted by the work of Yeats on Italian poets such as Montale, Solmi and Giudici, who even translated some of Yeats' poems, and Lucio Piccolo, who also had a brief epistolary exchange with the Irish poet, this too still partially unpublished, we arrive at a critical examination of the Italian reception of Yeats' works. W. B. Yeats e la cultura italiana is rounded off by an annotated bibliography of the translations and works of criticism which represents an important overview of the penetration of Yeats' work in Italy (1905-2005).W.

Business & The Sustainable Development Goals

CC BY-NC-ND

This short book presents a framework for making corporate strategies effective for sustainable development. This framework is a condensed result of a variety of interdisciplinary research and teaching projects, organised with colleagues in academia, practitioners at companies, civil society organisations and government, and with PhD and master students. Over the course of a considerable number of years these collaborations allowed me to develop a more integrated vision on the way corporations could effectively contribute to very complex societal problems: through new business models, cross-sector partnerships, thinking on inclusive development, linking macro challenges to micro approaches, positive change trajectories and all sorts of management techniques that are needed to (pro) actively take up complex societal challenges (rather than staying passive or shift responsibility to others).

Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) Channels in Drug Discovery: Old Concepts & New Thoughts

CC BY-NC-ND

The year 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the molecular cloning of the long sought-after capsaicin receptor, now known as TRPV1 (Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 1). This seminal discovery has opened up a “hot” new field of basic research and launched drug discovery efforts into the large family (by the latest count, 28 mammalian members and 27 in humans) of TRP ion channels. Indeed, it took less than a decade for the first potent, small molecule TRPV1 antagonists to enter phase 1 clinical trials, closely followed by TRPA1 and TRPM8 antagonists. The literature on TRP channels is immense. TRPV1 alone is a keyword in over 5000 publications searchable in PubMed. Clearly, it is not possible to capture the entire literature in a single thematic issue. Consequently, the selection of articles presented in this book represents a sampling of the literature, and is admittedly subjective. We tried to survey the wide range of human diseases in which TRP channels have been implicated, ranging from chronic pain through asthma and diabetes to cancer, and highlight the channels that appear to hold the greatest promise for therapeutic targeting. With this book, we hope to convince readers that TRP channels constitute a formidable family of potential therapeutic targets that will likely continue to demand attention.
