Since the non-Malayalee candidates and religious members cannot join the celebration of the Liturgy of Hours in Malayalam, an English version of the same is an urgent need. The Synod of the Bishops of the Syro- Malabar Church made a decision to publish the English version of the Syro-Malabar Liturgy of Hours which had been published by the S.M.B.C. Committee for Divine Office. Here we quote the decision of the Synod: “To entrust the task of bringing out an English version of the Liturgy of the Hours for use in the formation houses of the religious outside the territorium proprium to the Committee of Bishop Sebastian Vadakel and Bishop Mathew Vaniakizhakkel following the normal procedure of publication by getting the approval from the Commission for Liturgy.” (XV Synod, Session I, January 2007). As per the decision of the Synod of Bishops, we the Committee constituted for the purpose, in due consultation with the experts in the field, have prepared the English text and the same was approved by the Commission for Liturgy with necessary modifications. Since the songs are composed according to new tunes, CDs of the sample songs are distributed along with the book of the Liturgy of Hours. We are happy that the rich prayers of the Syro-Malabar Liturgy of Hours are now made available in English, contributing to the spiritual growth of our faithful from other states and countries. We place on record our most sincere gratitude to all those who worked hard to prepare this text and contributed their share for the promotion of the liturgical life of the Church. Let this new version of the Liturgy of Hours be a blessing for the Syro-Malabar Church in India and abroad. A : Amen. 4 Liturgy of Hours (On Sundays and feast days) C : Lord our God, we proclaim with pure hearts the resurrection of your Only- Begotten Son. Make us worthy to acclaim his victory with the heavenly choirs in hymns and praises. Let us proclaim the majesty of your infinite power. Psalm (of the day) Deacon chants the first verse of the Psalm with three Alleluias. The community takes up the Psalm in two sides but without the qanona and concludes it with the doxology. On Sundays and feast days after the Psalm the Celebrant says the prayer below: C : Lord God, We are bound to offer to your Most Blessed Trinity glory, honour, thanksgiving and worship. On Sundays and feast days after the Deacon intones the hymn of incense, the community takes it up in two sides. The veil of the Sanctuary is opened and candles are lit and incensing follows as in the Qurbana. Hymn of Incense Mighty Lord! how beautiful is your tent!
