Equal Measures was launched in June 2020 with the ambition of educating the hospitality industry on the importance of inclusivity and diversity, and with the overall goal of helping to eradicate all forms of racism that exist within our industry. To celebrate Black History Month, Equal Measures is launching its first initiative - aimed at highlighting the important contribution people of colour have made to our society in the UK. Any bar across the UK can participate and it is a simple process to be involved; bars must create a cocktail that is inspired by a person of colour - this can be anyone past or present; a musician, artist, writer, key worker or a member of the public whose story or contribution has inspired you enough that you want to share their story. The drink should then be placed on the menu as a special for the month of October and promoted on social media using the hashtag #equalmeasuresuk. By doing so we can help educate both our industry and customers about people of colour in our society who often get overlooked or rarely celebrated for their positive contribution. Equal Measures will be using instagram and trade media to promote the activation. The wonderful team at London Cocktail Week are helping to amplify this initiative by publishing a list of bars on their website to coincide with LCW also being for the month of October. If you have any questions please DM @EqualMeasuresUK on Instagram or email [email protected]. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I sincerely hope that together we can drive positive social change. Deano Moncrieffe Founder, Equal Measures Information for bars to participate in the EM Black History Month initiative 1. Choose a person of colour who inspires you to be the subject and namesake of your cocktail. Note - this can be anyone past or present; a musician, artist, writer, key worker or a member of the public whose story or contribution has inspired you enough that you want to share their story. 2. Create a delicious cocktail to go on your menu for the month of October - Black History Month - named after the above person. 3. Send details and images of both the cocktail and your inspirational figure to [email protected] by Monday 21st September. 4. Please include in your email: a. Bar name, address, website & instagram handle. b. Cocktail name, description & image. c. Name, description & image of your chosen inspirational person of colour. 5. Make two posts on social media at the start of October - one about your inspirational person and one of your cocktail - using #EqualMeasuresUK #BlackHistoryMonth and tagging in @EqualMeasuresUK if using instagram. Both posts should be repeated at least once more later on in the month but do feel free to publicise as much as you wish. 6. All participating bars will be promoted on the EMUK instagram and included in a downloadable document for consumers to find participating bars. 7. EMUK will provide an editable menu template for your drink which you are welcome to use in house for promotion of your cocktail and the story of your chosen inspirational person. You are not obligated to use this menu and can promote the cocktail in-house in whichever way suits your venue operation.
