PREPOSITIONS WEEK 2 CORKENGLISHTEACHER FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM & PATREON FOR MORE PREPOSITIONS QUIZ WEEK 2 ___ demand (wanted by a lot of people) ___ demand (whenever you want) ___ a diet have a lot ___ your plate (a lot of stressful things to deal with) ___ danger of ___ risk of ___ impulse ___ purpose ___ ease (relaxed, confident, not nervous) ___ ease (not having or showing any difficulty) ___ pencil/pen/ink written ___ the stars (destined to occur) blame sb ___ sth blame sth ___ sb put the blame ___ sb be to blame ___ sth accuse sb ___ sth be ___ fault for sth be guilty ___ sth be responsible ___ sth ___ the end (of something) ___ the end (finally) Fewer prepositions in this week’s review but they are tricky nonetheless. People usually have a lot of is- sues using blame and its various contructions so it’s good for you to work on that. You could write your answers here __ pencil so that later you can check them, correct them, jump around your house in either celebration or frustration and then rub them out to do them again. Either way, I’ve repeated this very quiz at the end of this little booklet just in case you need some reinforcement. Thanks guys, John. CORKENGLISHTEACHER PREPOSITIONS WEEK 2 in demand In 2020, face masks were in great demand. on demand Netflix is an on demand movie streaming service. When somebody or something is in demand, they or it is wanted by a lot of people, popular in a sense. We can place this at the end of the phrase like the example above or before a noun - Di Caprio is an in demand actor. Meanwhile, on demand simply means available whenever you decide to use something such as a service, particularly television, after all, we live in the age of on demand TV, or TV on demand. on a diet No dessert for me, thanks. I’m on a diet. have a lot on your plate Between the divorce and losing her job, she has a lot on her plate right now. On a diet is self-explanatory really. I think all of us at some point in our lives have been on a diet or two. The phrase to have a lot on your plate means to have a lot of difficult or stressful things to deal with right now. When somebody is adding to your already stressful life you can tell them that you have a lot on your plate right now so you don’t need their added stress. Hope you don’t have to use this one! in danger (of sth) The President was in no danger at any time. at risk (of sth) You’re at risk of getting caught if you keep breaking the law like that. Both of these mean that somebody or something is in a situation where damage, harm, death or destruction is possible. Perhaps being in danger is for more serious situations than at risk but there is only a slight difference in meaning. on impulse I often buy things on impulse. I should probably avoid that if I want to save money. on purpose I swear to God that I didn’t do it on purpose, it was a mistake, Ok? When you do something (often buying things) on impulse, it means you do so without thinking about it or planning it in advance. You’re impulsive so you do things on impulse. Meanwhile, doing something on purpose means intentionally, kind of the opposite of by mistake. at ease She’s a great teacher who makes all her students feel at ease speaking English. with ease He speaks Spanish with ease. I was convinced he was actually Spanish. To be at ease, to feel at ease or even to put somebody at ease involves feelings of not being anxious or nervous, feeling totally relaxed and comfortable. We can also use it with ‘put your mind at ease’. Mean- while, when you do something with ease it means that you do it very easily, with very little difficulty. Ease is the noun of easy so it’s an easy one to remember. (no pun intended!) CORKENGLISHTEACHER WEEK 2 in pencil/pen/ink Answers must be written in pencil, not in pen. written in the stars You guys belong together, it’s written in the stars. OK, first things first. I know the second one doesn’t really have anything to do with the first one here but the phrase is nice and to tell you the truth, I couldn’t come up with another preposition exercises to match the idea of writing. Anyway, you write in pencil, in pen, in ink, etc. (notice the absence of articles here). However, if you insert an article, you would say - write with a pencil or with a pen. Got it? Oh, and before I forget, when something is written in the stars, it’s meant to be, it’s destiny, fate, all that stuff. Do you believe in that? Personally, I don’t. Though I wish I were true. blame sb for sth Don’t blame me for all your problems. blame sth on sb Don’t blame all your problems on me. put the blame on sb He put the blame on her for causing his problems. be to blame for sth She said that she wasn’t to blame for his problems. Erm ... where do I start? Blame is such a pain in the neck! There are lots of weird little constructions with this one. They pretty much all mean the same thing though. You’d better learn them by heart, I guess. There are two songs that may help you - Blame It On The Boogie by the Jackson Five and Human by Rag N Bone Man. Those two songs will help you to remember blame sth on sb and put the blame on sb. Apart from that, you just gotta learn these ones, folks. accuse sb of sth How dare you accuse me of stealing your money! be at fault for sth Who’s at fault for this mess? be guilty of sth The former King has been found guilty of corruption. be responsible for sth I’m not responsible for failing to inform our clients in time. That was your responsibility! On a similar theme to blame, here we have a lot of ‘finger-pointing’ and accusations. When you accuse sb of something, you are suggesting they are to blame, they are guilty or they are at fauly. Likewise, we can use responsible here. at the end (of sth) I had been planning to buy the house at the end of this road at the end of the month. in the end However, in the end, I decided not to as it was too pricey. A nightmare for you too? Don’t worry, now we’ll study and learn the difference between these two. So, when we use at the end, it’s usually followed by of + noun - at the end of the road, movie, day, lesson, my life, page, etc. It’s the last point or location and means the opposite to at the start. Got it? Meanwhile, in the end simply means finally, after a series of events or everything has been considered. When you use in the end, you are revealing what happened or what will be done. I think that clears everything up, right? CORKENGLISHTEACHER WEEK 2 AGAIN? Yes, again. Repetition helps to remember prepositions.
