I chose to make this book about the process of getting to and returning from the moon, the individuals that got us there, and mankinds history with the stellar object. Also required was production of a small package that the booklet could conceivably be sold and shipped in. spotify gift card Part of a group project, the goal was to produce a gift card and acompanying box to fit with both spotify’s established aesthetic and the aesthetic of the project as determined by my fellow classmates I chose to make the gift card the exact shape and size of a casette tape, with the box being the size of a vintage sony walkman, with magnetic clasps metro perfume packaging The project was to create a package for a perfume bottle, based around a metropolitan theme. i chose to decorate the package with various black and white photographs of chicago, using hints of red on the retaining strap and the interior structures for a pop of color. bod candy packaging The idea behind this project was to create a series of package designs for three different varieties of soap, both individually wrapped, and packaged together. additionally, we were to create a bag that could contain the soaps and the package. I chose to exude a playful, childish feeling with my packaging with the cartoonish illustrations, while also being very luxurious, using solid blacks and hints of color with long slender forms. uomo packaging The goal of this project was to design the structure and packaging of six cubes of specific size, containing items and branding of our choice, contained in a larger box. i chose to go with a set of sets of matched jewelry, each one contained within its own sliding drawer box, and all six contained within a sliding drawer box. divine comedy cover The project was to redesign a cover for a classic book with mordern stylings. my interpretation takes the shapes of the domains of the afterlife as described by dante and depicts them through simple typographical forms four artists set The object of this project was to produce four booklets on four famous graphic designers. the artists i chose were stephan stegmeier, herb lubalin, paul schere, and milton glaser. i chose to cut the corners of the pages to give the impresion of an isometric three dimensional cube, and each booklet is color coded to evoke the cmyk pallates used in printing proc e s s logo development The project is to design the complete branding of a resturant, based on a predetermined set of variables. the resturant that i chose to go with is an authentic italian resturant the first concept was to take an outline of brunellesci’s dome (the duomo) of florence and incorporate that into the branding, the simplicity of ingredients being represented by the simplicity of the dome. this concept didnt end up working out. the second concept was to take an image ELLA of a mountain, which is O D PA associated with freshness M S O and refreshment and ice, DU TA and associate that with the freshness of the ingredients and food. this concept was accepted, but i felt as though there was no food association, or even italian association, as the U N A matterhorn is also swiss TH A EN LI TIC ITA the third concept works more on the freshness concept, using a knfe to emphasise a focus on chefs and food over atmosphere. form research A lot of inspiration was taken from paula scher’s work on the branding for shake shack, using lots of small illustrations to keep the design playful, which would mesh well with the design of the logo itself. i feel as though the logo being in the form that it is would allow for some manner of physicality, emulating the “cartoon purse” trend that was popular a couple years ago, an aesthetic that many millenials might connect to/ be familiar with the fresh food/ butcher knife aesthetic calls to mind butcher shops, and i wanted to emulate both the simplistic order forms that one can commonly find at butcher shops, and the dotted lines bordering text found on meat cut diagrams. in terms of exact graphical elements, i want to ensure that every form found within the design is a repetition of a form found within the logo, e.g. rounded corners, circles, thick lines, etc. font choice Grosso Colt e l lo/b e b a s n eu e This Step was mostly determined during logo design, with the practical needs of the logo design determining the font Real fresh. Real italian. / Roboto Slab choices, and those font choices being continued through into the rest of the composition. while some exploration took place of alternate Grosso C olte l lo / Playf ai r D isp l ay fonts, bebas neue was ultimately determined to have the least amount of horizontal space Real f resh. Real italian. / Montserrat requirement, while maintaining the general aesthetic of the logo. roboto slab is a good match for bebas, and the rounded edges emulate G ross o C o l te l l o / B e m bo the rounded corners of the logo. Real fresh. Real italian. / Open Sans G rosso Co l te l l o / Mo n t s e rra t Real fresh. Real italian. / DejaVu Sans thumbnails the main idea for the thumbnails was to get down the general shape/form of the menu, figuring out what worked best, and then the placement/layout of internal content would be determined later at the sketching stage. i quickly determined that i wanted the menu to be shaped like the logo, to give the customer something that they can physically handle, giving the resturant a talking point. 3,4,and 5 were accepted for further development layout sketches further development into the form and shape of the menu, ultimately deciding that the split down the spine of the blade is the most interesting execution of the concept detailed rough the rough effectively emulates the idea i had for internal vs external content, with the external content being plain and monochrome, and the internal being bright, colorful, and full of simplistic illustrations that emulate the style of the logo. the main issues at this stage are that the green doesn’t feel associated enough with food, the menu opens from the wrong side, and it’s much too small for the density of information presented to the viewer. digital development the most time consuming part of implementation of the final design was the creation of 11 individual illustrations to represent the different menu items. other than that, most of the development process was spent emulating the detailed rough, ensuring that it fit within gridlines, and that the text was readable at the size it was at. the grid structure that i had to adapt ended up being a bit unusual, with the images contained within their own grid which was inconsistent in size with the grid that contained the text. i feel it ended up being effectively structured though. final digital analysis there’s a lot of physicality to the final design, which makes it very appealing. the simple, minimalist outside appearence invites the viewer to engage and open it, exposing the colors and illlustrations inside. these elements add a bit of levity, though the structure and amount of text keeps it from being too childish/ immature. the form of the design, being so unique and handleable, emulates both the name of the resturant (translates to big knife), the logo, and the chef focused, butchershop inspired aesthetic.this design gives customers a talking point and helps them remember the resturant beyond just their impression of the food. I felt that this assignment was going to be much more difficult than it ended up being, but on settling on the idea of the logo as a physical object, i was able to turn it into an interesting design that i’m quite happy with. this helped me be less afraid of strict design constraints.
