From talks about immunity-boosting drinks to exercises, wellness has become the need of the hour. The pandemic has made people realize how important it is for people to take care of themselves. There are some physical and psychological issues that one segment of society faces in the wellness sphere. This segment is women. Let’s discuss these issues one by one. We’ll also talk about potential solutions to each of these problems. Division of household responsibilities When it comes to running the house, women are still expected to take responsibility. After a child is born, many women end up sacrificing their careers. The many roles that women are expected to play, like in their personal and professional lives, often take a toll on their mental health. WELLNESS The solution: There must be a clear division of household responsibilities between all members of the family. Women must realize that their individual happiness should not be lost while they are trying to juggle between multiple roles. Mental health issues Women continue to stay affected by inappropriate remarks and character labels. Harassment in personal or professional settings makes it difficult for women to maintain their mental health. Moreover, when women speak up about these issues, they are victim-blamed and silenced. This discourages them from speaking up about these problems. This makes it easy for these issues to be buried under the carpet. We as a society need to take a closer look at the kind of statements and thought processes people have in store for women. The solution: Awareness of the problems that women face, like harassment, can help. Women should be encouraged to speak up about the harassment and inappropriate remarks that affect their emotional health. Body Image Expectations If there’s something that women need to tick off their ‘to-do’ lists, it’s unhealthy body expectations. Right from skin tones to ideal body measurements, women face pressure to live up to specific beauty standards. The pressure to live up to such unrealistic expectations can increase the chances of women developing psychological disorders. For example, anorexia nervosa is a disorder in which women tend to starve themselves to lose weight. Body shaming happens regularly through multiple mediums. Women often face comments like being ‘too skinny’ or ‘too obese.’ Instead of promoting a healthy lifestyle, people focus on the numbers that an ideal woman should follow. The solution: People should not promote unhealthy body measurements, especially through social media platforms. Many women develop feelings of inadequacy which affects their state of mind. To sum it up… Women’s health has always been a matter of concern. By not reinforcing WELLNESS stereotypes around women and expecting them to confine to standards, we can help women grow. It’s time for women to take control of the car of their lives in their own hands! Budget at home: the first step to financial wellness It’s time to get your finances in place Esecureveryone knows that managing finances is essential. Finances are the key to a future. However, there’s one thing people often get wrong: budgeting. What is budgeting? Budgeting refers to keeping track of your income and expenses. You need to know about the amount of money that will flow in every month and the amount that you will spend. Two ways to note your income and expenses are by purchasing a financial planner or a spreadsheet. You can organise your financial planner or spreadsheet according to each month of the financial year. Learn about taxes If you’re a recent college graduate, you may also be new to taxes. While taxes may seem intimidating at first, you can consult a financial planner. There are WELLNESS many resources available online to assist you as well. Learn how much salary you will be left with after paying the taxes at the end of the year. After all, nobody likes rude shocks! Differentiate between needs and wants One key to finances is cutting down on unnecessary expenditures. You can do this by understanding the difference between needs and wants. Needs are things that you require to survive. For example, food, water, and shelter are the basic needs of an individual. Wants are things that an individual desires but does not necessarily require to survive. Whenever you need to buy anything expensive, ask yourself whether you really need it. For example, if you wish to buy a mobile phone, ask yourself whether you need that phone. Suppose that your mobile phone is damaged. In this case, buying a new phone is a need. If you only want an upgrade, it becomes a want. While it’s healthy to spend on things you want (as opposed to what you need) from time to time, prioritize your needs. Over time, the habit of prioritizing your needs will help you save money for other events, like unexpected financial emergencies. Notice financial patterns You’ve noted down your income and expenses. What comes next? It’s the financial patterns. Financial patterns will help you learn more about your habits. You’ll understand the expenses that you spend most of your income on and whether or not the expenses are avoidable. If the expenses are avoidable, you can cut down on them. If they are unavoidable, you’ll need to search for ways to raise your current income and meet the expenses. Plan for an emergency fund While you note down income and expenses, it’s also a great idea to plan for an emergency fund. This fund can help during unfortunate circumstances, like losing a job or natural calamities that significantly impact your life. Ideally, this fund should be equivalent to at least three months of your current level of income. Set an amount, and keep aside a certain amount of money WELLNESS from your income every month to create your emergency fund. It’s time to implement the tips that you’ve read in this article. Your time to work on financial wellness starts today. Does your workplace promote wellness? What makes a workplace Aemployees ccording to statistics, salaried and regular a healthy place? wage-earning men spend 53 hours a week earning, and the average woman works 39 hours a week. (Source: Periodic Labour Survey, July 2018- June 2019) Since work is a critical part of your workday, it’s critical for you to work at a workplace that promotes your wellness and well-being. Here are some ways through which you can check whether your workplace is the best place for you. Supportive colleagues Supportive colleagues are one indication of a good workplace. Do your colleagues support you in achieving your work-related goals, or do they demotivate you? For example, you can check whether your seniors try to train you or whether you can communicate with your colleagues in a healthy manner. Positive feedback Working and not getting proper feedback can be a huge boulder in your path to success. Every employee aims to work at a place where feedback can help WELLNESS you grow as a person. The feedback should not be in the form of negative feedback but positive, constructive feedback. Employees are not micromanaged Imagine someone standing over your shoulder, watching you while you type on your laptop for a long time. Wouldn’t it make you feel uneasy? If people at your workplace micromanage you, it is a sign that you may be a part of a toxic work environment. After a few weeks of joining the workplace, you should be given more autonomy in terms of the work you do. Workplace programs and initiatives A healthy workplace supports its employees in every way possible. If you can discuss any grievances with the top-level management, it is an indication of a healthy environment. Workplace programs can help boost the morale of employees. For example, your company may host sessions on topics like productivity and time management. These can help you improve your performance at work. Recognition of accomplishments A workplace must acknowledge the successes of its team members. After all, a team can only grow if its members are able to achieve goals. If your workplace solely looks at employee output and does not praise employees, it can be a red flag. Worklife-balance Work at a company with a good work-life balance. Spending all your time working can lead to stress and burnout. Moreover, they leave you with less time for personal family commitments and other leisure activities. Check employee reviews on Glassdoor/other platforms Before joining a company, it can be difficult to know whether you will be able to work in a healthy work environment. In this case, you can read employee reviews through websites like Glassdoor. You can know the necessary WELLNESS information about factors like working hours or work culture through these reviews. Moreover, you can interact with other employees at the workplace when you go for your job interview. Leave policies Every employee requires time off work from time to time. Check how many days in a year you can take leaves like holiday leave, casual leave, and sick leave. Check if your company can give you the option of carrying forward your leave balance. Moreover, your company must be comfortable with leaving you time for days when you have medical appointments or need to be absent in case of family emergencies. We hope that the aspects in this blog post will help you ensure that you work at the best workplace for you. WELLNESS WELLNESS Hardinn Corein EDITION 1 JULY 2021
