BUILD OR BOAST? Labour builds homes while Tories talk Local people need decent homes. 2017 was a year of big promises about new homes, especially a ff ordable homes (including for social rent). We compare records of local authorities. Fast forward to 2021. Labour is ahead of target. Conservatives have delivered little and questions are being asked about their competence. Labour-run Cambridge City formed a partnership with an experienced builder and got on with it. It’s ahead of target. 542 council homes started or completed by next March. Now planning for 1000 more. With as many net-zero carbon as possible. The Tory mayor likes to boast to the media yet little happens on the ground. He made a big deal out of three houses! Plans for 249 homes were suspended because the Government withheld grant money. Tory-run Cambs County Council formed a start- up. It owes millions to local Council Tax payers and is selling o ff sites to pay its debts. Nine houses built. A few more “coming soon”. Ditton Walk in Cambridge is being advertised with the cheapest currently available at £615000. Key workers here can’t a ff ord the over-heated housing market. It could take decades for a care worker, teaching assistant or nurse to save enough deposit to buy at local prices. Every house not built is another local family denied a decent home. Labour cares about people. That’s the di ff erence. My top priorities are building more social housing, clever transport investment and sustainable infrastructure. I was elected as a district councillor on a manifesto demanding that at least 50% of new build developments should be social housing or a ff ordable homes. As mayor I want to see a massive increase in social housing and a ff ordable homes. The 50% share matters. I will keep pushing for it. The Conservative Mayor, James Palmer, has failed to deliver on his £100m promise to build 2,000 a ff ordable homes. I believe what is needed to build these homes is co-operation with all partner councils and Housing Associations. Building and providing much more social housing is one of the key policies I pledge to put into place if elected in May. Nicky Massey for Police & Crime Commissioner Keeping housing safe. Keeping people safe in their homes. Working with our great communities I really think we can make a di ff erence. I want to restore confidence in the police. Many residents do not feel like they are being heard or listened to. It’s time to bring the police to the community. To sit at the table to be led by the community on what really matters. To work together on solutions to problems. Yes, crimes need to be dealt with by the police, but we should be aiming to stop the crimes happening in the first place. Neighbourhood watches are key and they should be given voice and a bigger role in helping our communities. Neighbourhood policing works only if our neighbourhoods are involved and invested in it. We need real neighbourhood working, bringing our communities to the table with the police and not the other way round. As a survivor of domestic abuse, I am passionate about supporting victims. Workplaces can help so that sta ff know what to do if someone confides in them. I will deliver a county-wide conference to agree best ways to tackle domestic abuse. Want to vote by post?
