Please dedicate equal thought to each of your chosen areas. If not now, when? The GameChange 2025 strategic plan is an essential step to fulfilling the NSBE mission while positioning the Society to leap beyond our time. The world as we know now is at the precipice of great change, emphasized and exacerbated by the countless hardships we have endured over the past few years. Being no strangers to war or suffering, we have maintained an unrelenting commitment to positively impacting the Black community globally. As the National Chairperson this year, my National Directives, T.I.M.E. (Transform, Innovate, Mobilize, and Evolve), targeted critical areas in GameChange 2025 that aim to transform NSBE#039;s influence and outlook, innovate NSBE programs and amenities, mobilize the NSBE membership, and evolve NSBE infrastructure, policies and operations. Additionally, I served as head of the Strategic Planning Task Force (SPTF), which governs strategic development and implementation for the Society. Through SPTF, we launched Phase I of GameChange2025, with significant developments like re-developing the entire backend of nsbe.org, transitioning all business operations and communications to Microsoft365, developing the GameChange2025 Executive dashboard, instantiating quarterly Executive Officer retreats across all levels of NSBE leadership, launching GameChange25 Virtual Roadshows, and establishing a partnership with IBM for a NSBE data warehouse. If re-elected, I plan to continue to guide NSBE into a new time by further renovating the NSBE Brand, building on the membership value proposition, and launching sustainable offerings, programming, and partnerships for member and community impact. In particular, I would enhance NSBE’s goals by focusing on strategic directions BRAND and GROW. BRAND—New Marketing and Promotion: I would continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure completion of the NSBE Brand project, refresh new Society-wide marketing products and processes, and highlight the NSBE member value through mass-strategic campaigns and partnerships. I would also aid our newly expanded IT team to complete additional phases of the nsbe.org website re-development and implement internal technology best practices. BRAND—STEM Policy & Influence: I would continue to work with our leadership and SIGs to facilitate our involvement in public and social issues as representatives and experts on policies that affect current and future Black engineers. I would also continue to work with our National TORCH Chair and Public Policy SIG to institutionalize the RISE (Research and development, Innovative thinking, Social emergence, and Excel) Initiative—which aims to educate members on social issues and participation in legislative and judicial platforms. GROW—Revenue Lift: I would continue to work with our Marketing and Communications leadership and staff to produce NSBE’s first Research & Technology Journal, a significant development that would amplify and acknowledge the work of NSBE members advancing frontiers in STEM. GROW—Professional and Technical Education: I would continue to work with our professional leadership to broaden year-round technical certifications and technology offerings for our members and communities. I would also continue to support the work of our Programs staff in extending our involvement in the 50K Coalition to include and support community college and technical trade schools. The past few years have shown transformative social justice and policy movements within the Black community. This prompted the launch of NSBE’s RISE and community crisis response initiatives. How will you expand NSBE’s reach and influence in 1) social justice or 2) STEM policy through your role, if elected? As the National Chairperson this year, I prioritized public and social policy issues, such as responding to key matters like relief requests for the Haiti earthquake and political turmoil, support for the Afghan women’s robotics team, advocacy involvement for the California K-12 Math curriculum, and assistance for discriminated African students during the Ukraine crisis. Additionally, I worked with leadership and UMass Amherst administration to support the NSBE UMass Amherst chapter in the wake of targeted anti-Black racist incidents. In my local community, I also serve in a few social justice and policy groups like the Stanford Electrical Engineering, Culture, Equity, and Inclusion (CEI) committee and the Stanford Science Policy Group. I plan to increase my involvement with social justice and STEM policy both through NSBE and in my day-to-day interactions in my community if re-elected as National Chairperson. Letter of Recommendation Leadership Resume NATIONAL VICE-CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE Erron Williams Prairie View A&M University Chemical Engineering Junior In reference to NSBE’s 2025 Strategic Plan (Ready, Set, Go, Brand, Grow), if elected/appointed, how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve a goal in two of the listed areas? Please dedicate equal thought to each of your chosen areas. As the National Vice-Chair, you must prioritize the SET lane as you are the leader of the National Membership Zone. We must focus on the NSBE Retention Program as we utilize the information and data we collect from the membership benefit project started by the previous Vice-chair. I will also utilize my position to launch the new national mentorship program. This year I was a part of the committee responsible for setting the groundwork for this program and as a vice, I can ensure that we carry out the framework so that all demographics of our members are connected to members they can learn and grow from. Lastly, for the Set lane, I will work with my International chair to better develop our multicultural Engineering initiative as NSBE takes steps toward more international representation As National Vice-Chair I will also prioritize the Ready lane of Game Change 2025. This Past year as National PCI Chair I had the responsibility of overseeing this lane and making structural improvements to the National PCI Committee to ensure its future. After doing this I was able to realize that a voice for NSBE Jr is needed in membership conversations as they are their own demographic. As National Vice-Chair I will include the PCI Chair on membership critical conversations as well as help to provide additional support to the PCI Committee. This along with the new mentorship that will work in tandem with Collegiate and professionals will help to make sure that our Pre-College section of the pipeline can keep up with the growth rate of the society. The past few years have shown transformative social justice and policy movements within the Black community. This prompted the launch of NSBE’s RISE and community crisis response initiatives. How will you expand NSBE’s reach and influence in 1) social justice or 2) STEM policy through your role, if elected? Visibility and Voice are two critical things when it pertains to Social Justice initiatives. As a Black organization, we must make sure that we are first to the discussion of these topics as we support our people. For the R.I.S.E initiative, I would like to membership a new NSBE platform to voice their opinion on these matters whether that would be more engaging town halls or a new initiative launched by the regional chairs the most important thing is that we make our members feel heard and give them a chance to take action. With the creative direction of our T.O.R.C.H. Chair, we can do a series of mini-community events or a large event at convention where we show the world what a group of educated professional people of color can do as we RISE to the challenge. Letter of Recommendation Leadership Resume NATIONAL PROGRAMS CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE(s) Ira Moore North Carolina A&T State University Bioengineering Graduate Student In reference to NSBE’s 2025 Strategic Plan (Ready, Set, Go, Brand, Grow), if elected/appointed, how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve a goal in two of the listed areas? Please dedicate equal thought to each of your chosen areas. As National Programs Chairperson, my primary focus will be concerned with the areas of Ready and Set where the content and implementation is the responsibility of the Program Zone. In addition to continuing to establish best practices in regards to the execution and evaluation of the programs disseminated, I will also look for innovative incentives and marketing tools to increase engagement and retention from our members, especially in a virtual environment. Specifically in the Ready, which is encompassed by our youngest members, the primary focus will be creating content that is designed to pique interest in stem and promotes consistent exposure to NSBE and to the different avenues they can pursue after their secondary education. We must provide all-encompassing support and engagement to our PCI members if they are to become dedicated collegiate and professional members. In terms of the Set area which is composed of our collegiate and graduate student membership, the focus will be supporting overall member wellness through academic, and mental health resources and activities. In addition, I would like to expose our collegiate members to both industry and academia so they are aware of all their options as future stem professionals and continue to build out the graduate student initiative which will serve as the center of NSBE graduate student programming moving forward. The past few years have shown transformative social justice and policy movements within the Black community. This prompted the launch of NSBE’s RISE and community crisis response initiatives. How will you expand NSBE’s reach and influence in 1) social justice or 2) STEM policy through your role, if elected? With the RISE initiative being seated in the programs zone it would be my responsibility to support the TORCH Chair in increasing awareness and engagement and expanding infrastructure. In addition to finding social justice organizations to partner with, we would leverage the public policy SIG to assist in lobbying our issue at the governmental level. Internally, the expansion will consist of regular panels with social justice experts, awarenesses seminars when issue arise so that we can be as culturally responsible as possible, and maintaining a consistent presence in the social justice space via our TORCH Chair and lastly providing opportunities virtually and in-person so that our members' voices can be empowered and heard. Letter of Recommendation Leadership Resume Avery Layne University of Maryland, College Park Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student In reference to NSBE’s 2025 Strategic Plan (Ready, Set, Go, Brand, Grow), if elected/appointed, how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve a goal in two of the listed areas? Please dedicate equal thought to each of your chosen areas. As National Programs Chair, I would oversee, lead, and provide support for the National Programs Zone. In doing so, my support and guidance would be in terms of knowing what to prioritize and positioning the National Programs Zone to successfully carry out the programming needs of the Society at the National level. One of the goals I have is to provide chapters with the resources that they need to implement relevant National-level programming at the chapter level. For the Set Priority Lane, that includes resources for programs such as the Retention Program, the NSBE Career Academy, and chapter Shadow Initiatives. These resources would range from implementation guides to programming templates for activities to resources that are ready for chapter use. In doing so, we will ensure two things: (1) chapter-level program implementation will be built on the program foundations outlined in the Strategic Plan, and (2) chapters will have access to resources and documentation that can be used year in and year out, removing some stress on chapter leadership in terms of developing original programming and ideally ensuring that there is a baseline for program implementation that all chapters can reach. Another goal of mine is to increase the visibility of technical development opportunities for our membership. This falls perfectly in line with the Technical Development initiative under the Go Priority Lane. In this goal, I plan on working the the National Professionals Programs Zone and our Special Interest Groups to both create new opportunities and identify existing opportunities for members#039; technical development. Then, with intentional collaboration with our National Finance Zone, we can loop in our corporate and university partners to support these opportunities; meanwhile, intentional collaboration with our National Communications Zone will help get the word about these opportunities out to our membership. The past few years have shown transformative social justice and policy movements within the Black community. This prompted the launch of NSBE’s RISE and community crisis response initiatives. How will you expand NSBE’s reach and influence in 1) social justice or 2) STEM policy through your role, if elected? As National Programs Chair,;ll have the opportunity to affect NSBEs reach and influence in social justice through our R.I.S.E program. A recently developed program, R.I.S.E will educate members on social justice matters so that they can use their technical and other skills to affect change for the Black community. As the program is still new,;ll have the opportunity to work with the National TORCH Chair and other relevant leadership and staff to shape the program in a way that maximizes the impact on our membership and wider community. Ideally, we'll be able to add structure to the program that can guide members in recognizing where there are opportunities for their technical skills to affect the community, and providing guidance on how they can mobilize to bring about the desired change. Letter of Recommendation Leadership Resume NATIONAL FINANCE CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE Oluwaseyi Akinwumi Purdue University Mechanical Engineering Junior In reference to NSBE’s 2025 Strategic Plan (Ready, Set, Go, Brand, Grow), if elected/appointed, how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve a goal in two of the listed areas? Please dedicate equal thought to each of your chosen areas. If Elected Finance Chair the sector that I plan on immensely contributing towards the NSBEs 2025 strategic plan by leveraging my position and passion would be the Brand and Grow areas. As National Finance chair, one of the most important jobs is maintaining relationships with BCA partners and other possible NSBE partners. In order to positively impact the brand area of the NSBE’s 2025 strategic plan, I plan on working closely with the Communications zone to rebrand and optimize NSBE’s image in a manner that not only highlight’s NSBE’s mission but also showcase the talents that are available within the organization, stemming from k-12 all the way to the professional levels. In order for a partnership to occur, both parties have to be under the impression that they are equally gaining something from the transaction. Without a doubt, partnering with NSBE comes with a lot of great perks such as access to top-tier engineers and upcoming future leaders. However, if the organization is unable to showcase this quality to an external partner in the most efficient way possible then it might lead to skepticism on the partner’s end. A strategic example that can be effective in helping optimize the NSBE brand would be to constantly highlight the success of the members on social platforms. These highlights can either be in form of students making groundbreaking strides around the globe or in NSBE partnered companies. Doing this can reinforce the idea that NSBE is home to some of the best engineers the planet has to offer and thus persuading them to partner ad buy into the NSBE mission and plan. Secondly, a system can be created for NSBE to have a bigger social presence and pursue partnerships outside of the conventional ones that we might be accustomed too. There are a lot of wealthy and well Black celebrities and icon that would be willing to not only contribute, provide exposure but also willing to partner on an impactful level. Acquiring more partnerships and building a better brand for NSBE, would streamline into the GROW area. The Grow area is to make strategic investments in NSBE’s future sustainability. Having better partnerships and in turn, more revenue along with involvements with different stakeholders would essentially be a form of investment that would help accomplish the “aspirational goal of 10K by 2025 and progress in its mission to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community”. The past few years have shown transformative social justice and policy movements within the Black community. This prompted the launch of NSBE’s RISE and community crisis response initiatives. How will you expand NSBE’s reach and influence in 1) social justice or 2) STEM policy through your role, if elected? From experience, the optimal way to make a social impact is through a unified front while gradually tackling an issue and growing the approach. Following this principle, if elected as finance chair, I would create a general template that every regional finance chair and chapter finance chair would follow. This template would require partners both on the regional and chapter level to be involved in some sort of community service/involvements that can help propel the Black Community. Finally, to further NSBE’s reach in social justice. I would look to partnerships with not just private companies but also government entities. Having this initiative in place can help create an environment that makes it easier to address social issues that have become hard to discuss in the past. Letter of Recommendation Leadership Resume NATIONAL PRE-COLLEGIATE INITIATIVE CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE Tayluer Streat-Riccgiuti Cleveland State University Biomedical Engineering Graduate Student In reference to NSBE’s 2025 Strategic Plan (Ready, Set, Go, Brand, Grow), if elected/appointed, how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve a goal in two of the listed areas? Please dedicate equal thought to each of your chosen areas. For 2021-2022, the Ready section of Game Change 2025 will focus on Middle School (6th-8th) and High School (9th-12th) students, therefore program priority will be given to the STEM Development Program and STEM Applications Program. If elected, my main goal as PCI Chair would be to use the National PCI Committee in conjunction with NSBE professionals to inform active and inactive NSBE Jr chapters about PCI programming and resources. To accomplish this, we need to strengthen the data collection method of all NSBE JR. chapters with active and inactive status criteria. Also, for the NSBE Jr. members, developing a bi-weekly newsletter about regional and national activities and programs. For the SDP, we will collaborate with NSBE Professionals to build an outreach program aimed at improving middle school members; professional and math qualifying skills. A Junior Debaters event or a National Science and Engineering Fair could be a conference program to inspire and stimulate engagement. For the SAP, we will use TORCH to develop outreach opportunities for our high school kids to interact with our collegiate members, as well as Engineering diversity to ensure that students are aware of all career pathways available to them. It is critical that we use NSBE += statistics to once again develop a system of accountability to indicate program success and attendance, but also to explore the source of poor participation from our NSBE Jr. members so that we can come up with strategies to remove barriers and evolve. For the Brand section, our organization needs to revitalize the reputation of black excellence. In the area of PCI, we can accomplish this goal by creating new ways to interactive with parents to ensure the awareness of our programs. In the past our approach has been in-person at the collegiate level, but if we're going to grow, we'll need to extend our exposure possibilities. We can accomplish this in a variety of ways, including conducting competitions outside of conferences. As a result, parents may attend these events and observe firsthand the positive experiences their children can have as a result of being a part of this organization. To improve the pipeline, we might take this opportunity to promote seek and partner university camps, as well as our conferences. The past few years have shown transformative social justice and policy movements within the Black community. This prompted the launch of NSBE’s RISE and community crisis response initiatives. How will you expand NSBE’s reach and influence in 1) social justice or 2) STEM policy through your role, if elected? The pandemic has shown the educational disparity in our community due to lack of resources and opportunities. As the PCI chair, I will create a communication pipeline of STEM summer camps and professional enhance opportunities along with mental health programs. I will encourage partnerships with national advancement associations and universities to create a fund for all students to apply for assist resources grants. Also, I believe it is important for our members to learn about past and current hidden figures in the industry. I would like to create a platform talk series of emerging Black leaders and historical figures. Letter of Recommendation Leadership Resume NATIONAL INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE Michele Tchindje The University of Oklahoma Industrial and Systems Engineering Senior In reference to NSBE’s 2025 Strategic Plan (Ready, Set, Go, Brand, Grow), if elected/appointed, how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve a goal in two of the listed areas? Please dedicate equal thought to each of your chosen areas. As the Region 5 international chair, my plan involved the unity of NSBE from all aspects of the world. That being said, I would like to reinforce the most inclusive environment there is in order to diversify the meetings held by NSBE to include more international chapters. The 2025 Strategic Plan of NSBE should include all members of NSBE, as international students should not be ignored as they serve NSBE well. While my platform as the Region 5 International Chair also focused on the success of international students in region 5, I would like to continue to grow the NSBE brand out beyond the US and Canada borders as the International Committee Chairperson. This would entitle increasing our membership numbers outside of the US and Canada. Our international students excel academically. I would also like for the communication between our international student body as well as the employers at conferences to be more prominent and precise. For example: knowing who is sponsoring international students ahead of time in order to be more efficient for the students would be ideal. Finally, as part of the 2025 Strategic Plan, I would like for us to continue efforts in chartering another NSBE chapter abroad and increase the number of accommodations and scholarships for our international students. The past few years have shown transformative social justice and policy movements within the Black community. This prompted the launch of NSBE’s RISE and community crisis response initiatives. How will you expand NSBE’s reach and influence in 1) social justice or 2) STEM policy through your role, if elected? Communication is a crucial part of any leadership position. As the international committee chairperson of NSBE, I will use my platform to encourage conversations which affect us as black people when it comes to social justice--no matter how uncomfortable. I want NSBE members to be aware of the issues we are facing not only in the US, but also abroad. We will continue to publish links that will help at home and abroad when there is a crisis. The STEM policy will be enacted more than it is now because when it comes to growing the NSBE brand, we should create more outreach programs for younger members through things such as promoting STEM activities to keep them curious and interested. This will be a stepping stone for the 2025 Strategic Plan. Letter of Recommendation Leadership Resume NATIONAL PUBLICATIONS CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE Derius Galvez North Carolina A&T State University Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student In reference to NSBE’s 2025 Strategic Plan (Ready, Set, Go, Brand, Grow), if elected/appointed, how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve a goal in two of the listed areas? Please dedicate equal thought to each of your chosen areas. AS the National Publications chair for the 2021-2022 I successfully outlined four critical areas for NSBE pub. to focus on that directly aligns with NSBE Gamechange 2025. I 've finalized the foundation for a NSBE Scientific Journal which will be live late 2022; this dips in to GO and Grow initiatives. NSBE members do not get enough recognition in the research and development side of engineering and by creating and maintaining this journal. We can capture research that is being done to advanced technical work and highlight NSBE community service efforts on a scholarly level. The NSBE Journal would be pivotal to sharing ideas from one black researcher to the next, also allowing opportunities for mentoring relationships to foster from industry workers, academic scholars, and undergraduate researchers. As the impact of research NSBE members publishes grows, NSBE would be able to create revenue from the journal; granting access to those who desire to use the knowledge we have presented to the world. With the establishment of the new NSBE website, the publication zone can bring awareness to a pivotal demographic of the organization; our NSBE Jr. and PCI members. Last year, I established a monthly content calendar that would highlight NSBE topics of NSBE Jr and PCI members through stories, videos and pictures that would inspire others to get ready and engage with STEM through NSBE.
