when your dog is UNLEASHED in the neighborhood it causes stress, fear and anxiety in other dogs who are leashed because they cannot escape if approached it results in reactivity - barking, lunging, frustration, fearful behaviours that look “aggressive” cortisol levels rise, making the dog on edge for many days after all of the above sets the dog back many steps in their training it is unsafe for the unleashed dog and it is irresponsible as a dog guardian Leashing up your dog can help other dogs feel safe in their neighbourhood. Please be mindful that most dogs need space from other dogs due to prior trauma history. It only takes 1 unleashed dog to ruin all of the hard work, investment and hours of training. Some dogs can never go off leash. Their neighborhood or on-leash parks are all they have. Please search for legal off leash dog parks in the area for your dog to enjoy. If you have a dog experiencing reactivity, look for a force and fear free certified dog trainer under BC SPCA’s Animal Kind Program and talk to your vet about SSRI’s or anti-anxiety meds. Sincerely, Your neighbour and dog trainer BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR. LEASH YOUR DOG. IT'S THE LAW.
