DRY PACKAGING CORROSION PREVENTIVE SOLUTIONS Metal components have been shipped intercontinentally from many years with use of a rust preventive oil often in combination with a VCI packaging. It is a tried and tested method for export packaging which is considered as safe & economical, therefore it is preferred method for export shipment. Increasingly customers are looking for corrosion free parts in dry packaging i.e. without rust preventive oil, to reduce further processes at receiving location. Conventional Process (Corrosion Prevention with Rust Preventive Oil): Steps will be eliminated in Dry Packaging: Corrosion does not occur because of presence of air alone, but a certain amount of water vapor is always present in the air. By application of suitable VCI technologies a barrier is provided on the metal surface protecting the parts from corrosion. However, in dry packaging there several challenges to overcome with elimination of Rust Protection Oil as rust protection solely dependent on VCI and for VCI to perform optimally part preparation and cleanliness is critical. Therefore, maintaining a high level of discipline in part cleaning, surface preparation and handling of components is crucial to success of dry packaging. Steps to be focused & requirement for Dry Packaging: Daubert® Dry Packaging Process: With the usage of suitable Kluthe’s Hakupur® cleaning fluids and Daubert® VCI’s products combined with expert chemical process study can help achieve Dry Packaging with elimination of redundant process steps. At manufacturing location - Rust preventive oil application. At receiving location - Washing process & rust preventive solution application. The parts fed into the production lines are cleaner compared with earlier method. Given ever increasing environmental concerns, OEM’s demand for clean parts without any rust preventive oils are expected to increase in times to come.
