1 July 202 3 N E W SL E T T ER Dear O. P. As I start this editorial could I firstly point out that I am not Martin Rabenau’s agent nor is he paying me to promote him in this latest edition of our Newsletter. Martin comes to the end of his second stint as Chairman of the Society in a few weeks’ time. (Only one year this time) over the last four - or five - years Martin has contributed con siderably to the Society and especially this Newsletter , and in this last year he has seen the School celebrate the 300 th Anniversary of the opening of the first School H ouse in Bethnal Green and the Society celebrate its 125 years since its foundation. Yo u will of course remember his “Brief history of the Parmiter Family” and see his contribution to this newsletter. I would like to thank him for his contributions to the Society and his work over the last year and wish his good mate Keith Carter good luck w hen hopefully he will take over from Martin after the AGM in September. I must thank Roland Bermel one time teacher of chemistry at the Bethnal Green and Garston schools , and long - time treasurer of the OP football club for creating the front cover of the colour supplement. It uses all of the photos I took at this year’s A nnual L unch. If you look carefully, you might just find yourself on the front cover, not once but three times. I will in the next week or so email members a link to see all the photos that were taken at the lunch and the football festival. Feel free to download one or all. Can I once again thank the school for their help and hospitality over the last year. The committee have attended many functions at the school this year where we have been warmly welcomed. There has always been an open invitation to all Old Boys to visit the school a t Garston. Give Helen Clark (the Heads PA) a call. Information can be found on the school web site. Our hard - working secretary Roy Burgess has put the informat ion regarding the AGM on a page towards the end of this newsletter. It would be nice to see a few more members turn up to this event. He has also produced a follow on to his “Future direction of the Society” and a letter to all members that I don’t have an email address for on my database. May I thank everyone that has helped with this Newsletter especially those that have contributed with an article. As always can I thank the school, Helen Clark and her staff that get this issue printed and Andy O’Brien f or printing the Colour Supplement. You can help by sending in an article for our December issue. Deadline for copy the end of November. I hope everyone has a good summer and we can look forward to a bumper Newsletter in December. Tony Quy Editor Staff 1973 - 2004 FOUNDED 1898 President: MICHAEL JONES, BA. MEd. Tel: 07711556461 Email tonyquy@btinternet.com Old Parmiterians'Society EDITOR TONY QUY 7 Westminster Drive, Church Gresley , Derbyshire DE11 9RX 2 President’s Report to the Society Greetings from Garston to all Old Parmiterians. Not quite the scorching summer we had last year but good enough to mean we are in the midst of a hectic period of summer games and athletics as well as educ ational trips and visits 2023 has proven to be another good year for the school with students taking full advantage of all the opportunities available be they creative, sporting, technological or academic. We seem to have won a record number of competitio ns locally, on a District level as well as Nationally and these have ranged from Cricket, Rugby, Football (girls and boys) and Netball to Debating, Enterprise and Computer Science. As I write, we have a record number of offers for our Sixth Form students to attend colleges next year at Oxford and Cambridge as well as a number of students having offers from prestigious companies including Rolls Royce to complete degree apprenticeships. The fact that one of our former students, Oliver Dowden, is now Deputy Prime Minister only goes to show that the sky is the limit when it comes to what a Parmiterian can achieve. It has been a privilege to attend a number of social events hosted by our partner societies across the Parmiter’s family. March saw a return to the Brick Lane Music Hall for a St Patrick’s Day dinner. My thanks to Mike Tyrell and the trustees of the Almshouses Trust for their customary warm hospitality. The school looks forward to welcoming the Pensioners to the school for a summer party later this month. In May, our School Captains, school colleagues and I were guests at the Annual Old Parmiterians’ Society lunch in London. It was wonderful to see so many people there and an honour to be invited by the Chairman, Martin Rabenau, to deliver an addre ss. My continued thanks go to the many Society members who continue to attend and support school events and activities which most recently included our annual cricket match against the MCC. Our team of very capable students earned a consecutive “honourab le draw” against a very capable adult side, captained by Old Parmiterian, Connor Emerton. It was a privilege too to be a guest at the Old Parmiterian’s Football Club annual supper at Leyton Orient. The event marked the 125th Anniversary of the Club and we were able to celebrate this at our “Festival of Football” held in June. Aside from the 125th Anniversary, last year also marked the 25 the anniversary of the school winning the Senior Schools National Football Cup in 1997. Four teams, that included a Su per Vets side (for which the Headmaster made an appearance), a side drawn from members of the 1997 team, our Garston Old Parmiterians team (who play in the Hertfordshire league) and our first XI took part in a competition that ultimately saw the Garston OP s come out on top – a steady nerve and superior finishing making the difference as they defeated our first XI on penalties. It was a terrific social occasion and a chance to celebrate so many fond Parmiterian memories Finally, it’s time to bring you up to date with your Houses. Sports Day was held in June and this year it was Carter who prevailed to lift the Sharples Cup. As I write we still have almost three weeks of term still to go but the front runners for the House Championship this year are Lee, Ca rter and Woolley (in that order). However, there are plenty of House Points still to be picked up so it’s anyone’s race as we come towards the “business part” of the term. As ever there is an open invitation for all Old Parmiterians to visit your school. I always so enjoy meeting you and hearing of your times at Approach Road or Garston. If you would like to visit my PA, Helen Clark, h.clark@parmiters.herts.sch.uk , wo uld be very happy to help with the arrangements. I wish you all a most enjoyable summer Michael Jones President of the Old Parmiterians’ Society Headmaster, Parmiter’s School 3 125th Anniversary Lunch of the Bethnal Green OP Society. On the 5th of May, Just over 100 Parmiterians gathered at the Royal National Hotel in Russell Square for our annual reunion, on this occasion to celebrate 125 years since Dr Scott, the Headmaster at that time had declared that any worthwhile ‘Boys Public School’ should have an Old Boys Society and should initiate an Annual Reunion for its past students. That reunion for most of its entire history has been an evening function. This new departure from tradition came about from an appreciation that a large part of our ageing mem bership would prefer to travel during daylight hours rather than late in the evening. The Committee had already decided to heavily subside this special lunch in order to thank our members for their tremendous support over the years. This gesture nearly bac kfired on us, as just four weeks before the event, our organiser, Mick Marsden informed us that our confirmed attending numbers totalled just 63, with the hotel demanding a minimum of 80 and that should we not reach that number, the number deficit would st ill have to be paid for. Some speedy phone calls to previously regular attendees soon rectified the situation, many of them not realising that their late confirmation of attendance would cause Mick such unwanted headaches. The lunch itself was a great succ ess, there was a wide spectrum of age - related attendees, including a few well received 90 - year - olds , some members from those last years at Approach Road and our regular Garston visitors which despite having to reluctantly take time off from their school du ties, were able to fill two tables. There was however, an unwanted appearance of two unexpected visitors alluding to the names of Charlie and Camilla who thought that our lunch was a precursor to an event they were both attending the following day, which a pparently included an ornate special hat fitting experience followed by some sort of street procession . Luckily Maxie Lea MBE was on hand and quickly escorted them out of the building. The feedback from the members during the afternoon was that this lunch time venture was worth pursuing in the future. The Committee were somewhat shocked at the increased cost of holding a function in the heart of London which is not likely to diminish anytime soon. As a result, we are already looking at alternative venues around the city edges to obtain better value for our members. To celebrate 125 years the centre pages of the menu depicted some of the society's history during that time, with special reference to the many indi vidual achievements that have made us all proud to be Parmiterians. As already mentioned, the afternoon was a great success with the Chairman warmly welcoming both Bethnal Green and Garston Parmiterians and making a special reference to Brian Robinson, who for health reasons and COVID restrictions had been unable to be with us for a few years. Brian with his unrivalled humour as our master of ceremonies, has been, for over 30 years, one of the main reasons we have enjoyed such excellent attendance to our di nners, despite the Bethnal Green school closing over 40 years ago. The usual toasts to the ‘school houses’ and to a variety of other abstract connections including the promotion of Leyton Orient to the next echelon of the Football League, concluded the fir st part of the afternoon. After a short ‘refill break’ our Vice Chairman Keith Carter led the selected choir members in a rousing rendition of ‘the best’, this was followed by the raffle which as last year, was free and comprised ten identical prizes of ‘t ea for two’ at a variety of venues throughout the country. Our thanks to Roy Burgess ‘Hon Sec’ for arranging and distributing the prizes to the fortunate winners, which ironically included both himself and two other members of his immediate family. The nex t formal toast was to the ‘Foundation, the School and the Society’ which our President and Present Garston Headteacher, Michael Jones, responded to. Great roars of appreciation as always greeted the results of the latest inter house competitions and of the schools other successes including their continued, outstanding examination results and pupil achievements. 4 The formal part of the afternoon having been concluded, the lunch finished at just after four o’clock, leaving the membership free to return early t o their loved ones or in over 99% of cases to find a local hostelry to further discuss their recent ailments and medication. Martin Rabenau Chairman Old Parmiterians’ Society 2022/23 12 5 th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BETHNAL GREEN OLD PARMITERIANS SOCIETY The first 25 years. 1898 - 1923 The Society was formed under the leadership of Dr Scott, Headteacher of the Approach Road School at that time. Accordingly, he became our first President. The original committee comprised twelve in number, with an initial thirty m embers in total. In 1899 the initial activities included Rambling, Cycling, Tennis and Football. One year later, Cricket was established and thus began the first Past vs Present fixture. This was also the year of the inaugural Annual Dinner which was held at the School. Over the next 20 years, Smoking Concerts became the most popular social evening events, together with slide shows and lectures. During the early 1900s, a Dramatic Society, a Hobbies and Craft's Section was also formed, with cheese suppers an d dance evenings coming to the fore as the membership grew. At this time the first school songs were written, including 'The Best'. 1n1911, Mr. Frankel, PE teacher at that time formed a gym club, a swimming club and, just prior to the First World War, esta blished a rifle club in preparation for the imminent battles across the Channel. 632 Parmiterians were enlisted on active service from which 103 did not return. During that campaign however, 130 gained commissions, with Lt G H Woolley OBE awarded the Victo ria Cross. As the war came to an end, Society activities quickly resumed with the addition of Boxing and Wrestling. 1923 - 1948 The school acquired the Nelson Road facility. OP's were afforded full use during the afternoons at weekends. This period also saw the first of many Ladies Night Festivals, at which the newly formed OP orchestra would perform. Several outstanding athletic performances were recorded during this period, with L Goody becoming the 100 - yard sprint champion of England and B Bailey becoming the 400 yard and high jump champion during a three Nation event. The football section joined the Nemean and Old Boys Leagues and Jimmy Clark scores the first ever century for the cricket section. As the Second World War broke out, although many OP's were c alled to active service, the Annual Dinners continued, albeit in a different way, with many wives attending as representatives of their serving husbands. In 1943, HT Forecast, 'killed in action', left £100 to the Society which was put towards the formation of the ever - popular Football Club Suppers, which remain even now. 1946 saw most of the OP activities resumed, with the much - respected Tony Jones taking up the first of his many OP and School offices. 1948 - 1973 Sir Frank Morgan becomes the first OP to be K nighted. Dennis V eck , later to become OP Secretary and newsletter editor, becomes one of the first new intake returning to Approach Road as the war comes to an end. 1956, celebrated the school's 250th anniversary, held at the Law Society, a venue that was to host many OP Ladies Festivals during the ensuing years. The Parmiterian Masonic Lodge was constituted during that same year after several unsuccessful attempts to convince the Governors that this would be a useful addition to the ever - growing Parmiter F amily. 1958 saw the death of Sammy Walker who joined the Approach Road School as a first former when it opened in 1887. John Cartwright joins West Ham and later coaches the England Under 19's. 5 During the early sixties, both Roy Fitch and Martin Rabenau are selected to play for England Grammar Schools at football and Cricket for Essex Under 18,s, with Roy going on to become the first OP to gain a 'Blue' at Cambridge and Martin to become the first OP to teach at the School. Mickey Carter wins the ABA bantamw eight Championship, and loses an Olympic medal on a controversial decision, Graham Stilwell becomes Junior Wimbledon Champion. Tony Want signs for Spurs, John Crow becomes Governor of the Bank of Canada. In 1973 the OP's celebrated their 75th anniversary, and the Football section embarked on their first overseas tour. 1978 - 1998 One of the best ever OPFC first Xi's do the double, winning both the SOL League and Challenge Cup and, in the next year, the AFC Senior Cup. Unfortunately, only a few years later, the Governing Body were forced to sell both Nelson Road and the Approach Road School to facilitate the School's move to Hertfordshire in 1977. Whilst the Football club survives this loss, having a larger membership, the Cricket section folds. Many S ociety members who had previously joined the Society primarily to enjoy the opportunities afforded by both sporting sections, now resigned from the Society in protest, feeling they had been betrayed by the Governors regarding the sale. Fortunately, the Soc iety had retained the dedicated services of Derek Bleach, Ron Zackerwich, Brian Robinson, Alan Bailey, a young Mick Marsden, and many others, who were both willing and more than able, to move the Society forward. Both the late Derek and the ever - present Mick having given over 40 years of unstinting service to our Society. In 1982 the Golf Society was formed. Tony Quy became the first BG OP to Chair both the Bethnal Green and Garston Societies and will soon celebrate 50 years of continuous service in almos t every aspect of both BGOP and Parmiterian History. Keith Medlycott, elder twin of Paul (Parmiter Purse Chairman), set up a record 7th wicket partnership of 202 runs for Surrey. Terence Clark and Emrys Hughes are appointed HM Ambassadors while Alp Mehmet is awarded an MVO. 1998 - 2023 OPs celebrate their 100th anniversary with a Gala Ball and Dinner at the Brewery, EC1; Max Lea receives an OBE from the Queen for services to the Referees Association; Several OP's and their partners attend Ladies Day at Ascot. In 2004 a group of OP, s, and G arston Staff/ Governor's embarked on the first of four 'World War' remembrance trips, organised by Colin Tattle, Deputy Head at Garston. Initially, to the Battlefields at Ypres, followed by trips to the Normandy beaches, Berlin, and a further visit to Ypre s, revisiting the memorial plaque which celebrates Lt Woolley's World War 1 bravery. During the early 20oo's a succession of well attended Biennial Summer Balls took place at the Marriott Hotel, Waltham Abbey. Unfortunately, a gradual lack of support event ually made them financially unworkable and although several attempts were made to facilitate a variety of other social events during the ensuing years, they were, likewise, destined to suffer a similar fate. In 2022, the school celebrated its 300th Anniver sary, with each section of the 'Parmiter Family' holding a variety of extremely successful events marking this historic occasion. 6 2023, BGOP Society celebrates its 125th Anniversary Dinner, which for the first time is to be launched as a lunchtime gatherin g. History will record as the day before King Charles accedes to the throne, but of considerably more significance. 2023 onwards looks rather uncertain at this moment in time, with our youngest members already approaching retirement age and your present Co mmittee desperately looking for new blood, new teeth, hair transplants and reconditioned wheelchairs, who knows what the future holds. Martin Rabenau (From the Lunch Menu) Old Parmiterian Society History Some achievements of the Society and of its members during the last 125 years The following history of the society was researched and compiled by Alan Baily and formed the basis of his memorable speech at the Centenary Gala Ball of the Old Parmiterians' Society Bethnal Green (on 13 th June 1998) in the magn ificent surroundings of the Brewery Chiswell Street in the City of London.
