Quotidian Queer Quotidian Queer Quotidian Queer Call for proposals | Deadline: October 3, 2021 Exhibition at the University Hall Gallery, UMass Boston On view March-April 2022 “Quotidian Queer” seeks to showcase new currents in art made by LGBTQ+ artists in the Greater Boston Area. Twenty years into the new millennium, the work of many queer artists – past and present – is regularly featured in many galleries and museums, a level of acceptance matched in part by the ever-growing presence of queer people and queer expressions in mainstream American popular culture, from Lil Nas X to the first out active NFL player. Of course, these advances are the direct product of decades of struggle for civil rights and equality, a movement that has achieved stunning victories, such as the end of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in 2011 and the Supreme Court ruling granting marriage equality in 2015. But this acceptance remains forever tenuous, subject to forces – mainly political and religious – determined to erase or limit the lives of queer people (most noticeable in the ongoing debate over transgender rights). For LGBTQ+ foks, celebratory progress comes with a constant state of vigilance. We seek artworks that focus on this distinctly contemporary queer state of being defined by everyday pleasures, dangers, and anxieties, from the bliss of intimacy, sexuality, and redefined family units to the constant impact of homophobia and transphobia. A plurality of artistic viewpoints is desired, reflective of the entire LGBTQ+ spectrum, as well as racial and ethnic identities. All artistic mediums and modes of art are welcome. The exhibition will be curated by the Director of the University Hall Gallery, Sam Toabe, in collaboration with Associate Prof. David Areford. The exhibition will be organized in part to compliment Prof. Areford’s course ART 207: Queer Visual Culture which will be taught during the run of the exhibition. Students will engage in various coursework linked to the exhibition. And programming will include artist panel discussions and other events.
