ADAM’S ADVENTURE GUIDE 665​TH​ AIR FORCE STATION N 47° 22.364 W 088° 10.425 HIGHLIGHTS ▪ TRESSPASSING ▪ Cool abandoned buildings ▪ Spooky ghost town, even in daylight it’s eerie DIRECTIONS From Houghton take Memorial Drive [M­26] across the lift bridge and into the Keweenaw. Turn left to stay on US­41. Follow US­41 through Hancock and Calumet continuing for 30.2 miles to Gratiot Lake Rd and turn right. This road is about 2 miles down the road from the Eagle Harbor Cut­Off Rd. Continue up Gratiot Lake Rd for 2.7 miles and turn left on Horace Greeley Rd. Continue up the road .4 miles until you reach the site. If you see a million NO TRESPASSING signs on Horace Greeley Rd, you’re at the right place. Turn right on M­26 across the bridge towards Dollar Bay and continue 4.7 miles. Turn right on Montreal Rd and continue for 1.5 miles. Turn left onto Senter Rd and continue for 0.4 miles before making a right hand turn to stay on Senter Rd. Continue on Senter Rd for 1.6 miles. Turn left to stay on US­41. Follow US­41 through Hancock and Calumet continuing for 35.9 miles to Lac La Belle Rd and turn right. Take Lac La Belle Rd 7.4 miles to Smith Fisheries Road, just before you reach the bay. (For some reason the road has a no trespassing sign, which you can ignore.) Keep on Smith Fisheries Rd. for 2.5 miles until you get to a spot to the right with parking for 3­4 cars. FIGURE 1 Map to Bare Bluffs ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ­ This is the entry that begins with the Michigan Nature Association's signs to the bluff. After a .7­mile walk down the old road, a blue sign to the left signals the beginning of the hiking trail. Soon another sign with a map of the 3­mile loop emerges. As you head up, be sure to follow the blue stenciled arrows. At one point fairly near the bluffs, the trail dips for a short way and the trail makes an unmarked left­hand turn which is easy to miss. Turn right onto M­26 towards Lake Linden and continue for 10.6 miles. Turn right on 9​th​ Street/Bootjack Road. Continue for 2.2 miles and turn left on Rice Lake Road. Continue on Rice Lake Rd. for 6.2 miles and turn left on a small two­track (N47​ 10.695 W88 15.935​)​ ​just past a blueberry farm on your right. Turn left to stay on US­41. Follow US­41 through Hancock and Calumet continuing for 28.6 miles to Eagle Harbor Cut­Off Road. Continue down Eagle Harbor Cut­Off Road for 5.5 miles until you come to M­26. Turn left down Pine Street at this intersection and continue for .8 miles until the road splits­take the right fork. Continue for another .6 miles until you reach another intersection. Continue straight through the intersection veering a little to the left. The road becomes relatively straight and flat, and after 1 mile or so the road will turn sharply left. There is a turnoff to the right here that goes down to the stamp sands. Turn left to stay on US­41. Follow US­41 through Hancock and after 13.1 miles turn left on 203 in Calumet. Continue on 203 for 1.4 miles then take a right on Tamarack Waterworks Rd. Continue 1.6 miles and take the left fork to stay on Tamarack Waterworks Rd. Continue another 1.1 miles and turn right on Sedar Bay Rd. follow Sedar Bay Rd. for 3.1 miles till just before the end of the road. Turn left to stay on US­41. Follow US­41 through Hancock and Calumet continuing for 35.9 miles to Lac La Belle Rd and turn right. Keep on Smith Fisheries Rd. for 6.0 miles until you reach the end of the road. Continue for 2.1 miles on foot to the base of the falls. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ­ The footpath snakes along Superior's shoreline and has some impressive cliffs leading to the water. On a high wind and huge wave day this might be pretty spectacular. Also one option is kayaking from Lac La Belle to here in a day along the shoreline. It’s a beautiful kayak trip and worth your time 100%. ­ The upper falls, accessible by a mile or so hike upstream, has cliff jumping potential and is a cool waterfall to see that many miss out on.
