Lizzi Ogle – Tremont District Library 1 Early Literacy Tip Tuesday October 6th – Tried and True Favorites: Picture Book Recommendations Hi everyone and welcome to another week of Early Literacy Tip Tuesdays! Last week we talked about Board Books and why they are perfect for the youngest of readers and went through a few of my own favorites. This week and next week I want to continue with a few booktalks on Picture Books and Alternative Format Books. We’ll start with picture books and picture book authors that I really like, both classics and newer works, that are sure to be a hit with your family. You can never go wrong with Eric Carle, Bill Martin Jr., and Dr. Seuss. Your child probably has read Board Book versions of their books and will continue to enjoy their stories throughout their elementary school career. If you’re looking for more by these authors try these maybe lesser known titles. The Nonsense Show by Eric Carle. This is one of Carle’s newer books and features silly illustrations of people, creatures, and mismatched places. Silly illustrations will entertain younger readers and plays on words will entice older listeners. Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Are You Waking Up? & Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Are You Going to Sleep? By Bill Martin Jr. Both of these stories feature Mother Cat trying to wake up or ease to sleep Kitty Cat in a silly manner. Both of these are great for discussing bedtime or morning routines. Horton Hatches the Egg by Dr. Seuss. I’m sure you all know Horton the elephant from Horton Hears a Who, either the book or the movie, but have you heard this story about the faithful elephant? Horton yet again is dedicated to taking care of a young creature, this time an egg when it’s mother convinces him that she needs a vacation. Horton and the egg go on quite the adventure and you’ll be surprised to see what ends up hatching! Lizzi Ogle – Tremont District Library 2 Eric Carle, Bill Martin Jr. and Dr. Seuss are easily considered classic authors by many. Here are a few newer authors that you might enjoy as well! Mo Willems. If you haven’t jumped on the Piggie and Elephant train yet, it’s time! Piggie and Elephant are a comedic duo who learn lessons about sharing, friendship, taking turns, and much more in their conversation style books. Mo Willems also crafted the cautionary tale of Knuffle Bunny, another unforgettable character. James Dean, along with Kimberly Dean and Eric Litwin, are responsible for bringing Pete the Cat to life. Who doesn’t love a cat with shoes? Pete the Cat and his band of friends go on many fun adventures. Pete has also been featured in his own Board Book series “Pete the Kitty” and has titles for independent readers starting to read on their own as well. Peter H. Reynolds writes and illustrates beautiful art inspired stories. Characters, and readers, are encouraged to learn from their mistakes, know that a mistake isn’t always a bad thing, and follow their heart when they are creating. Jory John. Jory John has written many books including Goodnight, Already!, The Bad Seed, and The Good Egg. One of his most recent releases, It’s Not my Fault! We follow an unnamed main character and his pen, his bookbag, and bedding that are angry at him for blaming them for his mistakes. This book is a great read for learning to take ownership of mistakes and is a pretty fun read too. Okay, we’ve covered just a few authors that everybody should enjoy at least once. Let’s cover a few individual titles I love. It was really hard to narrow this down, so I decided to choose them all! Included with this video is a list of 100 picture books that I love. I chose these based on books I loved as a kid, books I love now, and books that are crowd favorites. For this video, I’ll just cover a few books that I love that were released in 2020. Lizzi Ogle – Tremont District Library 3 Sun Flower Lion by Kevin Henkes is a new favorite of mine. This story features a Sun, a Flower, and a Lion, just like the title predicts. Despite having just about one sentence per page, this book is split into chapters which makes it stand out against other picture books and is a fun twist. Snail Crossing by Corey R. Tabor is a book I loved from the beginning after I just read the description. It’s about a very determined snail who is trying to cross the road to get to a very delicious looking patch of cabbages. Misfortune ensues, but he does meet new friends along the way. This is a great book for learning to never give up on your dreams. Bad Dog by Mike Boldt is an absolute riot. From the illustrations to the very realistic child-like dialogue Boldt captures the story of a girl who wanted a dog for her birthday, but got a cat. This is a great story for reading to kids who are wanting a new pet. Memoirs of a Tortoise by Devin Scillian is a heartfelt story about an old tortoise named Oliver and his human, Ike. Told like entries in a journal over the course of a year, Oliver tells us why he likes his human so much and why he is so confused when he doesn’t come outside one day. Oliver visits his mother and she reminds him that pets don’t live as long as them and that’s why we should enjoy every day we have with them. There are a lot of stories out there to help with the loss of a pet and I think this one is a great addition to that collection. Even though the roles are switched, and the human is the pet, this story does a great job of addressing hard material and reminding children to love the memories of what they had. The story ends on an uplifting note, as well, so don’t be afraid to try it out! Okay, this obviously isn’t an extensive list of all the great picture books and picture book authors out there, but we can’t cover every single one of them in this video so I Lizzi Ogle – Tremont District Library 4 narrowed it down to just a few of my favorites. Check out the description for even more of those favorites! We are always getting great new titles in, so make sure to check the new shelf each time you visit. If you see a book online that looks good, ask us about it! If we don’t have it, we can ask another library to send it to us for you to enjoy. Thank you all for joining me for another week of Early Literacy Tip Tuesdays. Next week we’ll be looking at a few Alternative Format Title Books that are sure to spice up your reading life. See you all then! Book/Author Recommendations: The Nonsense Show by Eric Carle Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Are You Waking Up? & Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Are You Going to Sleep?
