Out of the blue, a blue young hedgehog dashes into the scene and destroys all of the robots in existence, freeing the animals trapped inside. That was the premise of the first Sonic game. Over the years, Sonic, along with his animal friends, have battled the bad guy, Dr. Eggman, and foiled his evil plans. When you look at the conflict of each game, you might think, “Those look very dangerous and risky. Sonic must be professional at something besides his speed…” However, there’s more than just speed that the blue animal hero delivers. 1 [redacted] 4th block 8-23-2017 Sonic the Hedgehog shows, through a speedy blue hedgehog and his world, that it’s possible to accomplish a dangerous and daunting adventure and defeat a vicious enemy, as long as perseverance, determination, courage, friendship, and teamwork is present. Dr. Eggman, a mecha-loving fat mad scientist who dreams of world domination, always comes up with new and improved plans and gives Sonic more dangerous and less possible challenges. He has tried to use his giant planet destroyer, summon an ancient water god, unleash an artificially-created “Ultimate Life Form”, and even command a mystical being to erase time. Sonic, determined and never wanting to give up, equips his iconic super speed and fearlessly races out to stop the evil plans and preserve the peaceful world he loves. There are tight spots he frequently fall into, but he uses his speed and attitude to get out of them. He has failed once, nevertheless, he’s always there to bounce back and win. For example, in “Sonic Adventure 2”, Eggman frees Shadow the Hedgehog, an artificially created “Ultimate Life Form” who looks like Sonic, to destroy the world. Sonic is mistaken as Shadow and is captured by GUN. He faces many hazards and challenges, such as escaping from GUN and encountering Shadow, and is even met with Eggman’s threat to carry on his grandfather’s plan to destroy planet Earth. With a fake Chaos Emerald, some perseverance, and barely surviving an explosion, Sonic makes it… and you’ll have to see. Sonic is not the only hero who shows these vital traits in stopping villains and saving innocent victims. Silver the Hedgehog has also shown shades of this. Wanting to stop whatever caused the apocalypse, he has traveled back in time and explored the past, eventually finding out what he needs. 2 [redacted] 4th block 8-23-2017 Knuckles the Echidna, the last guardian of the Master Emerald, has went on epic and deadly journeys to recover it, sometimes in pieces. He always came back with the emerald safe and sound. Besides courage and perseverance, friendship and teamwork is also shown in the games’ message. Sonic has befriended a young shy fox, Tails, who uses his child prodigy intelligence and expert knowledge in mechanics to help defeat Eggman. Over years, the wisecracking teenage insectivore has met several other animals and became best buddies with them, including Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, and Cream the Rabbit. In return, his friends have offered help to Sonic in hard times. Believe or not, antiheroes, such as Shadow the Hedgehog and Rouge the Bat, have teamed up with Sonic for good. In some games, the power of friendship is obviously shown. Friendship fuels the Chaos Emeralds in “Sonic Adventure” and “Sonic Heroes” stars 4 teams of three working together to find what happened to Eggman, as well as also showing Chaos Emerald power being fueled by such thing. “Sonic Rush” introduces a lone princess from another dimension, Blaze the Cat, who takes her job of guarding the Sol Emeralds seriously and has a hard time socializing. Sonic helps her find that friendship is extremely vital to one’s life. You might think that Sonic’s speed is what helps him keep going to success. However, Sonic’s determination and “never give up” attitude is truly the recipe to how he defeats Eggman. Friendship also fuels the success, since with his kindness, he has made friends with other characters that have given help to him. 3
