Book your trip now! By Busola Evans November 28, 2023 Hot on the heels of its Paris debut, Design Miami 2023 (December 6-10) is set to feature more than 40 galleries and exhibitions with museum-quality collectibles covering 20th and 21st century furniture, lighting and objects. Since its inception in 2005, this annual fair has become a nexus for collectors, curators and design enthusiasts, showcasing cutting-edge creations and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of design. This year’s event is no different; it takes place in Pride Park, opposite the Miami Beach Convention Centre and focuses on the theme, Where We Stand, a celebration of design inspired by place, community and heritage. Alongside the exhibitions are a series of cultural programmes including thought-provoking design talks and panel discussions which provide a context for much of the work on display. What to See at Design Miami 2023 From mesmeric sculptural installations and one-of-a-kind objects by global design stars, to never-seen-before showcases from India and Ukraine, rare vintage design by some of the best galleries known to man and a celebration of unexpected, future-forward materials honed into the most beautiful objects, there is undoubtedly much to see at Design Miami 2023. Here are 10 key highlights that must not be missed. Take note. The Pollination Dance by Maison Perrier-Jouët and Fernando Laposse Photo: Supplied French champagne house Maison Perrier-Jouët has joined forces with renowned Mexican artist and designer Fernando Laposse to present a dynamic installation made up of 3D-printed animals and flowers, spotlighting the key roles both play within the ecosystem. The installations, consisting of various figurines, share a glass finish from being made from eco-resin and sage starch and encourage meditation, observation and reflection. fernandolaposse.com Æqu ō Photo: Supplied Making its Miami Design debut is æqu ō , India’s first collectible design gallery, which will be unveiling a selection from its new collection Panna. Curated by gallery creative director Florence Louisy, the offering is an array of sculptural pieces, crafted through the art of folding diverse materials - from copper oxidized in Jaipur, and burnt pieces enameled in Alibag, to soft Kashmiri felt. At its core, Panna is a profound tribute to India’s rich craft heritage and a considered blend with contemporary design. aequo.in Tuleste Factory Photo: Supplied Tuleste Factory will be making a return to Design Miami with The Zone, a presentation which investigates the possibility of creating a fusion between the present and future, and explores the possibility that there may be several parallel worlds out of sight that are not accessible to the human eye. Inspired by cinematic classics such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Skin I Live In, The Zone will present a metaphorical space and use materials such as stone, glass, resin, wood, velvet and leather to enhance the sense of experimentation. tulestefactory.com Victoria Yakusha Photo: Supplied Ukrainian artist and designer Victoria Yakusha presents a new limited-edition collection titled The Land of Light. For this, Yakusha turned to the ancient Ukrainian craft, yalkuvannya, a technique typically used for wall finishing. Each piece is made from the live material, ZTISTA - a sustainable blend of clay, hay, and recycled materials. Applied in more than five layers to a wooden structure, ZTISTA creates a textured, vibrant surface. The result is a collection of designs that reflect the spirit and wisdom of the land where they come from. yakusha.design Utopia by Bohinc Studio Utopia, a sculptural installation of irregular, bulbous forms by Lara Bohinc presented across the Miami Design District’s public spaces. Photo: Supplied Acclaimed designer Lara Bohinc, founder of Bohinc Studio and the winner of Miami’s hotly-anticipated Annual Design Commission, has created Utopia, a sculptural installation of irregular, bulbous forms. Presented across the Miami Design District’s public spaces and at the entrance of the fair, the sculptures include outdoor seating, tables and oversized light sculptures. Additionally, 900 hanging egg-shaped birdhouses will be dispersed throughout the Miami Design District’s trees, providing shelter for wildlife. With sustainability as a key focus, the pieces are crafted from environmentally friendly cork and painted sorbet hues to echo Miami’s architectural colour palette. bohincstudio.com Friedman Benda Photo: Supplied The gallery is responding to the theme of the fair through a conversation between historic and contemporary designers, all united by their emphasis on simplicity, elegance and asymmetry. Prepare for works by the likes of Wendell Castle and Bruno Gambone will be presented alongside Byung Hoon Choi and Faye Toogood. friedmanbenda.com Marianne Huotari Photo: Supplied Loewe Craft Prize finalist Marianne Huotari is one of the female designers given a key focus by gallery Hostler Burrows, which will present new work by a selection of contemporary Nordic artists and designers, spanning from emerging to established. Notable highlights will include Huotari’s entirely hand-crafted ceramic beaded chair and her novel wallwork Shangri-la. Others worth noting are new glass sculptures by Hanna Hansdotter and recent sculptural works by Kristina Riska. mariannehuotari. f i Adrian Sassoon Photo: Supplied Adrian Sassoon will make its debut at Design Miami with a presentation of contemporary glass and metalwork from its roster of international designers, curated under the title Nature by Design. Highlights of the extraordinary craftsmanship on display include Vezzini & Chen’s sculptural lighting designs which explore themes of repetition, texture, and geometry. Meanwhile, silversmith Hiroshi Suzuki will display works inspired by the elements. Created by hammering sheets of silver, Suzuki will showcase sinuous vessel forms, transforming rhythms he observes in nature. adriansassoon.com Ateliers Courbet Photo: Supplied Ateliers Courbet presents a curated display that highlights a selection of contemporary design pieces by eight artists, all underpinned by principles that value a circular economy whilst honouring traditional craftsmanship. Each designer locally sourced raw materials and then used time-honoured techniques to carve, shape, and form the organic matter into a design that respects its origin. The selected pieces include Pieter Maes’s hand-crafted Meridienne sofa inspired by the organic folds and curves of a human body, to Ethan Stebbins’s hand-crafted Wabi Sabi bed, utilizing Japanese time-honoured techniques of interlocking joinery with hand-cut and chiselled local materials. ateliercourbet.com Ginori 1735 Photo: Supplied Ginori 1735 will present the fourth edition of Reborn Project curated by design expert Frédéric Chambre. Reborn Project calls on 10 international artists and designers, selected by Chambre, to transform and reinterpret white porcelain tableware and iconic objects from Ginori 1735, into unique and irreplicable pieces of art and design. ginori1735.com A journalist for more than 20 years, British-Nigerian Busola Evans is an interiors specialist, covering everything from trend reports to profiling some of the industry's biggest names including Martin Brudnizki, Patricia Urquiola and Beata Heuman.
