In the 1990’s we were being chased away from public places for skateboarding, and we needed a space of our own. We built some ramps with wood we found, often where we found it, but they weren’t permanent. Skaters need something that will last. Wood ramps rot, but concrete is forever. For life. So we built a concrete bowl in my backyard that we could skate together year after year. Soon, skaters and Parks Departments from everywhere started calling asking for concrete skateparks. We’d drive state to state, sculpt concrete and skate together, beginning as strangers and leaving as family. After twenty years, and over 350 skateparks, that family now spans three generations across three continents. With each new park, the Grindline bond grows even stronger. Once you’re in, you’re a part of something bigger than yourself. Forever. That’s what we mean when we say Grindline For Life. We started doing this because we wanted to give skateboarders something they deserved. That’s still what drives us every day. Skateboarding changes lives. It changed mine. For us, building skateparks isn’t a business —it’s our cause. Whether you want a neighborhood skatespot or a regional destination, creating your skatepark is the greatest act of community service we can think of. Mark Hubbard Founder Grindline Skateparks A representative from Grindline will conduct an in-person assessment of your skatepark. The results of the assessment can be used to guide the decision making process for your municipality regarding future maintenance and repairs for your skatepark. We'll provide you with a detailed Assessment Report. The Assessment Report includes an analysis of the skatepark's design and safety, a list of potential hazards with photos and descriptions of all issues, the cost of repairs, and a strategic plan for repair, and/or upgrade. Tehaleh Skateparks, Pierce County, WA ASSESSMENT REPORT CONTENTS Assessment Report Contents Rating the Overall Physical Condition of Your Skatepark Skateparks are relatively new in terms of construction (the oldest surviving facilities date back only to the late 1970’s). As a result, it can be difficult to determine how long a skatepark will last in terms of both condition and function. Some of the skateparks that were built in the 70’s and 80’s are still used on a daily basis. Other projects that are only a few years old already need to be redone due to a combination of poor design, construction deficiencies, and lack of maintenance. Our Skatepark Assessments focus on the current physical condition of your skatepark and touch on an analysis of the design, function, and safety of the park. Skatepark condition covers items including: • Hazards • Wear & Tear • Rust & Corrosion • Graffiti • Damage (Malicious) • Erosion • Spalls & Cracks • Structural Failure • Drainage Issues • Surface Finishes • Differential Settlement Prior to determining a specific list of maintenance items, we will rate the overall condition of your skatepark using the following rubric: EXCELLENT end of life estimate: 20 years The skatepark has been recently constructed and shows little to no signs of wear and tear. Regular maintenance is required to maintain. VERY GOOD end of life estimate: 15 years The skatepark is a few years old and shows some minor wear and tear. Regular maintenance is required to maintain its performance and minor repairs/upgrades/improvements should be considered at this time for future planning (funding/design/construction). GOOD end of life estimate: 10 years Your skatepark is beginning to age and shows a noticeable level of wear and tear. An increase in the level of regular maintenance is required to maintain its performance and minor repairs, upgrades, and improvements should be implemented at this time (funding/design/construction). POOR end of life estimate: 5 years Your skatepark is old and shows a high level of wear and tear. A high level of maintenance and major work will be required to bring the condition to an acceptable level. A plan for skate park repairs, redevelopment, demolition, or replacement should be in place and ready for action. Assessing Hazards and Critical Repairs After assessing the overall condition of your park, we will identify any hazards that need to be dealt with and produce a list of action items. Hazards may include things like extremely worn or damaged surfaces, structural failure, dangerous elements, drainage issues, and others. Hazards will be listed in terms of urgency so that the most critical items can be dealt with immediately. Please see the following page for a sample list of action items. LONG TERM PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE Long Term Preventative Maintenance Concrete skateparks benefit from preventative maintenance. Concrete skateparks have an average life span of 20 years and are built to withstand the elements and heavy use. We can help extend the life of your investment beyond that, and help keep the park in tip top shape for your community. Grindline Skateparks performs repair and preventative maintenance services on concrete skateparks. A thorough assessment is conducted to outline the current condition and safety of your skatepark. We then develop a recommendation plan for necessary maintenance, repair and to address any safety concerns. Grindline can then execute the repair and maintenance plan or we can work with your public works resources to develop a skatepark maintenance program. Preventative maintenance is an ongoing process. Is your skatepark aging? Is it safe? Is it in need of an upgrade? Addressing these questions on a regular basis is the best way to extend its life. Grindline’s Skatepark Assessment and Service Plans are part of an ongoing, long term, preventative maintenance program that can help get another 20 years out of your skatepark investment. E AS UL SE SCHE D Long Term SS Preventative Maintenance RE PA I R SCHEDULING PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE Scheduling Preventative Maintenance Skateparks are designed for heavy use, and with heavy use comes wear and tear. It's natural for a well-loved skatepark to need maintenance over time, and by scheduling routine skatepark assements and scheduled maintenance, a responsible skatepark owner can minimize the effects of wear and tear on their park. A well-maintained skatepark is safer for both active and passive users, and can be enjoyed for decades longer than a park with wear and tear that goes ignored. Typical Long Term Preventative Maintenance Schedule Maintenance demands for concrete skateparks are infrequent compared to other sports facilities, but should be scheduled on a regular basis to keep them safe and functional. The wood skate ramps were built approximately Samual Marvel 20 years ago at the Kalama Skate Park and are in need of repairs and upgrades. The Civil Engineer scope of this project was to perform a structural condition assessment for the two Parks & Recreation wood framed halfpipe ramps, a 24’ wide, hipped, mini ramp and a 9’ tall vert ramp. Planning & Development Division Our Scope required Grindline to produce a detailed report that Maui County could use County of Maui Office: 808-270-6173 to appropriate budget for design and repairs of the ramps and also issue an RFP with Cell: 808-866-8060 the information provided in the Structural assessment. Grindline worked alongside [email protected] Rixey Design, LLC, a local, licensed structural engineer to create this report. Adam’s father, George Rixey was the original architect for this project 20 years ago and Adam even spent some time working on the actual build of the ramps when he was 18 years old. The structural framing was assessed based on its original condition and design. Evaluating compliance of the originally designed structure with current or prior building codes, or other specified criteria standards, were not part of the scope. 3 INDUSTRY RECOGNITION INDUSTRY RECOGNITION Industry Recognition “When I return to Seattle (most every summer), out of all the “Many thanks to Grindline for building all the insane skateparks epic parks in King County alone, Delridge Skatepark constantly in the Northwest.
