The number of communities that focus on folding paper is increasing, as well as the number of folders. We have reached a level we see origami not only as a hobby but as a cornerstone of communities. However, most of these communities are focused on the folders, concentrating their efforts finding more and more models available to fold, and creating opportunities to meet and enjoy folding together. VOG is a brave movement that puts the creators, not the folders, at the center, seeing them as the core of the bigger origami community. The idea that an association of folders should be based on its creators is the best propellent for soaring to the skies and reaching new heights. I look in awe at the advances this group has made through the years, and I am sure, more than ever, this is the way! Pushing each other, sharing ideas and techniques, as well as happy or sad moments in life, or dining together, VOG members are living proof of how a supportive community can bring out the best in each and every one of its members. VOG - The Art No matter how hard one searches and tries, one will not find a way to define art. I will not try that either, but not being able to define it, does not prevent me from recognizing a work of art when I see one. For me, out of all the parameters of Art, one stands above all - the emotions it evokes. It can be a sense of wonder, happiness, or troubling my mind. If I am not moved by it, it is not art for me. Next, I ask myself, do I want it in my home? Where should I put it? I admit, my criteria are simple, but, for me, highly effective. In the origami world, there is usually another question - do I have the urge to fold it? We have the privilege of measuring the works not only by their final look but also by the way they were made. There is no other art genre that grants its lovers that ability. VOG is presenting a collection of works that immediately create that itch, that nagging thought - “Do I have the right paper to fold this?” And when you do, another layer of beauty and elegance is revealed. The folding process has a major part in explaining why we get so excited about a good model, and the Vietnamese creators are among the best at finding the most interesting and intriguing transitions from the square paper we start with to the stunning results. VOG - The Style Style is the cross-section between Art and Community. The ability to say this piece is made by a member of that group means there is a recognizable connection between the models of a guild of creators. For me, VOG is more than a community and more than a stamp of quality. It is the highest level a group of origami enthusiasts can reach: creating a body of work that follow a certain style. Let me rephrase that - creating a unique and evident style of origami. I applaud the members of VOG, and their leaders, for setting the bar so high, yet keeping the society open and welcoming, happy to share and spread the joy of origami - the joy of folding their models, or just looking at them, with awe and excitement! VOG - The Books The first dot on a graph has no direction. The second event is the best test of the success of the first event. The third book creates a vector, and the VOG one is pointing high, to the top. The book you are holding now is the result of an evolution process, where the models are better, the mix is well-balanced, and the joy of folding is overflowing! Ilan Garibi Over the past 17 years, Vietnam Origami Group has experienced many vicissitudes of life. We have faced ups and downs and are still looking for our way to regain the burning enthusiasm we once had when we started this group. Because there are times in all our lives when we experienced life’s troubles and naturally found other joys, our love for origami sometimes faded or transformed into something else. I feel lucky and grateful to the authors of this book, who are still able to sustain their enjoyment of origami. We are truly fortunate to have them, as other folders and I can continue to learn from them and be inspired by them. Furthermore, there are many new rising stars who have been discovering origami ways that the old members could never have thought of. I am so proud that we have many folders/creators of different styles: from minimalistic to super complex, from geometric with sharp lines to beautiful curves. I hope that all these paths will continually be pursued by our many talented members of VOG. Thanks to Nicolas Terry, many creators in Vietnam have been brought to the attention of the origami world through the books he has published. Nicolas supports us so much and invites our members to participate in many origami events and conventions. Thank you, Nicolas, you have always been a great friend of VOG. We would also like to give thanks to the people that helped us to finish this book: Ilan Garibi for your kind words, and the test-folding and proof-reading team for your time and efforts to make this book as perfect as possible -- thank you all so much. We are in a momentous phase. Many changes are happening in our group and this book may open a new era for us. VOG will no longer be a teenager but become a more mature, wiser adult who aims for high goals and cares for the next generation.
