Talking to people Leading negotiations Lying for the party Party faces are the outgoing point of contact for most NPCs. High charisma can be useful, but is not needed to be the party face. Faces are characterized by: Snooping around Gathering information Hitting the books Eyes are the informants and researchers of a party, they might be sneaky, they might be direct, but they notice things the party needs to be aware of. Eyes will typically be: Breaking and entering Intimidating people Smashing and grappling The muscle of the group might be the big guy, but might also be the scrawny goblin kingpin. Muscles find leverage and apply force, physically, mentally, or otherwise. Spot a muscle when they are: Keeping everyone alive Providing a moral compass Boosting the team's morale Hearts are the X factor in any group. They are the glue that holds the team together, everyone's connection to the team. A heart will be the one who is: Social Roles in D&D ungeons and dragons is a game of social contracts between players and the DM. Players form the party of adventurers who complete quests Inner and Outer Roles D the DM sets in front of them. But how should characters interact within that party? There are several archetypes which players may choose from to give them a social role within the party. Beyond simply their class or race, this social role is how they interact with each other, how they help or hinder each other, and how they behave around NPCs. How your character thinks and what role they take is dictated by two simultaneous roles, the inner role and the outer role. There are many ways to describe these roles, but as defined here, the inner roles are the Instigator , Planner , and Follower . The outer roles are the Face , Eyes , Muscle , and Heart Inner Roles Inner roles describe how your character likes to approach situations, it could be a combat encounter, a social situation, or a fireside chat within the party. instigator You take risks You cut down on debates The instigator wants to get things done and make things happen. You might be an instigator if: Planner You do your research You talk it out first Planners question information and think ahead. You might be a planner if: Follower You see the big picture You adopt someone's opinion Followers are essential to a party, without them planners and instigators argue forever. You might be a follower if: Generally speaking, characters will want to start action, plan for action, or follow into action. Outer Roles The outerroles inform how your character functions as a member of the adventuring group. This is the relationship each member has as a part of the larger whole. While Face Eyes Muscle Heart every player will be either an Instigator, Planner, or Follower; your party as a unit might only have one face, or none at all. For most parties, someone will fill each role even if it is not on purpose, and one player might fill multiple roles.
