Commonwealth Gastroenterology – Morning Instructions – Golytely Golytely Preparation Instructions WHEN WHAT YOU NEED TO DO DETAILS At least 7 days before your procedure • Arrange for an adult family member or friend to drive you to and from the procedure. They will be required to stay onsite for the entire procedure. • Pick up the prescription from the pharmacy along with clear liquids for preparation. • If you do not have a driver, your procedure will be canceled. • Approved clear liquids are listed on the next page. • Begin a low-fiber diet (avoid nuts, seeds, grains, rice, beans, and raw or dried fruits/vegetables). • Check what medications you may need to stop taking. You will need cardiac clearance to stop any blood- thinners like Coumadin, Plavix, Xarelto, etc. • If you are a diabetic, please contact your doctor who manages medications for instructions on dose changes. 2 DAYS BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE Day • Drink at least eight (8) glasses of clear liquids during the day. • Increased hydration improves the success of the prep. Evening • Eat dinner by 9:00 p.m. • Do not eat any more solids after dinner. THE DAY BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE Morning • Drink only clear liquids when you wake up. • Mix Golytely with one gallon of water until it is dissolved and refrigerate. • Do not eat any solid foods. • Do not consume alcohol. • See the list of clear liquids on the next page. 4 :00 p.m. • Begin drinking the first half of prep solution. Drink one (1) 8-ounce glass every 15 minutes until half of the solution is gone. • Drink plenty of clear liquids during your prep to stay hydrated. • If you become nauseated, pause drinking for several minutes. • Using a straw to drink may be helpful. 8:00 p.m. • Begin drinking the second half of the prep solution. Drink one (1) 8-ounce glass every 15 minutes until the rest of the solution is gone. • If you have followed all the instructions, your stool should no longer be formed, but a clear or yellow liquid. Failure to follow instructions may result in inadequate prep. The risks of inadequate prep include missed polyps, incomplete procedure, and sooner follow - up requirements.
