TROY KIDS TRIATHLON ATHLETE GUIDE & IMPORTANT RACE INFORMATION Dear Parent and Young Athletes: Congratulations on registering for the Troy Kids Triathlon! In order to make the event both enjoyable and safe please review the following information. PARTICIPANT & WAVE LISTS: Below is a TENTATIVE Wave Time List with start times for each wave based on different age groups. Waves are organized by age with the oldest kids starting first and then each wave gets younger as the race goes on. Participants must start with their assigned wave. AGE START TIME 13-14 7:30 11-12 8:15 9-10 9:00 7-8 9:50 4-6 10:40 Inspect your child’s bike for general condition. Checking tires, pedals and the nuts and bolts that hold things together. J & D Bicycles from Troy will have a pop up tent on the grounds to assist with those unexpected issues. Also they will be able to help you with helmet adjustment. Please make sure your child’s helmet and footwear are suitable for riding and running. NO flip-flops, sandals or other open toe shoes. Proceeds from the Troy Kids Triathlon benefit The Clubhouse-Dreambuilders. The Clubhouse is a non-profit, free, faith based after-school program for children. Over 400 teens work together to provide free challenging after-school and summer activities for over 480 children, 110 days each year! Teenagers design and implement the project, offering tutoring, faith-based teaching, and recreational activities. They build trusting, ongoing relationships with the children while instilling within them goals, leadership skills, and a commitment to family and education. This is Miami Valley’s future! RACE DAY Bring your athlete NO LESS than (1) hour before his/her age group approximate start time. One hour should give you time to park, unload, pick up your packet, t-shirt and goodie bag, get body marked, set up your transition area, potty break, review the course, helmet checks, go back to your vehicle because you forgot something and get ready for your swim. Troy Aquatic Park will open at 6:30 am on race day. Registration fee for race day sign up is $25.00 PACKET PICK-UP: Packet pick up is in the entrance to the Troy Aquatic Park, 460 W Staunton Dr, Troy. If you are Pre Registered, go to the table marked Pre Registered where you will receive your T-shirt, goodie bag and the volunteer will mark your timing chip # on the top of your hand with a sharpie marker. BODY MARKING: Body marking is inside the Pool area. This is where a volunteer will look at the timing chip # on his/her hand and mark this number on both upper arms with a sharpie marker. TRANSITION: For transition area setup, one adult (for athletes age 8 & under) will be allowed to accompany and help their athlete set up their space prior to their race. We have volunteers and encourage you to allow the volunteers to assist your child, but we do understand that this age group can get full at times. We will allow only ONE adult into the transition area during their race to assist your child. Practice with them now until race day on having them put on their shoes and helmet… Practicing transition can also be fun. When following your child around with a camera, please avoid tripping over other participants or course equipment. THE SWIM: At the pool, they will be staged for their starting wave. For the best and safest experience for your athlete, we start each swim group with those who are comfortable in the water, usually on a swim team or are regularly swimming or who have done it before and then follow with those who are not as experienced. Athletes are allowed to use water wing, life vest, etc. if they need it. There are lifeguards in the water with the kids if they need or want help. We encourage all athletes to participate and have FUN, however on occasion some become apprehensive with the swim and change their mind at the last minute. This is NOT A PROBLEM. They will just stay on the pool deck until the last participant in their age group has exited the water and then the non- swimmer will continue the event by moving from the pool deck to transition and continue with the race. They will not be available for awards but WILL RECEIVE A PARTICIPANT MEDAL. THE BIKE (also known as T1): After the swim the athlete will enter TRANSITION IN. Go to their bike and put on their helmet, shoes, etc. They will then walk/run their bike to TRANSITION OUT. After Leaving transition there is a MOUNT LINE. This is where they get on their bike. The athlete will then bike their designated course. HELMET MUST BE BUCKLED BEFORE LEAVING TRANSITION. THE RUN (also known as T2): As you are coming to transition on your bike, there is a DISMOUNT LINE before entering transition. This is where they get off of their bike and walk/run their bike TRANSITION IN. Put their bike back where it was set up earlier, take off helmet and it’s time to run..run..run TRANSITION OUT. The age group 4-6 are the only age group who run directly to the track. Age groups 7-12 will run their designated distance outside of the stadium and once entering the track will finish by running the last 300 meters on the track. Age group 13-14 will run their designated distance outside of the stadium and once entering the track will complete 1 ½ laps before crossing the finish line. These athletes will receive a scrunches from a volunteer after their first lap. It is import to have this scrunches when they finish to prove they completed the laps. FINISH LINE: Finish line is located under the Balloon Arch on the visitor’s side in the Stadium. Post-race refreshments are close to the finish line with. Water, Gatorade, and snacks. AWARDS All participants receive a finisher’s medal. Awards are handed out to the top 3 boys and girls in each age group. Since we like to make sure results are accurate and depending on the number of athletes in an age group, please listen to announcement for when the awards ceremonies will be held. Primary results will be posted on the fence by the award area. Please make sure they look accurate and contact the timing company located in the tent at the finish line immediately if there is an issue. Awards will be given out near the finish line shortly after the last participant in that age group finishes and times have been verified. There is a back drop and 1, 2 & 3 boxes for you to stand on for pictures for every athlete if you’d like. TIMING CHIPS Your child will get a timing chip. This is worn around their ankle. The timing chips are adult size, so they may need to be penned or taped. We will have both, but please be sure the timing chip is secure and will not fall off. GENERAL NOTES We understand your enthusiasm for your child’s participation but we ask that you be courteous to other parents, participants and VOLUNTEERS. Please be aware of the race course flow. Please follow the directions of the volunteers in their YELLOW SHIRTS. Volunteers don’t get paid, they are spending 6 hours of their time making sure your child is safe and has a fun time. PARKING Parking is available at the Troy Memorial Stadium. Depending on the time you arrive this could be full. Additional parking is available in the Hobart Arena parking lot that is adjacent to the venue and also at the ball field on the corner of Staunton and N Market St STREET CLOSURE Adams St will be closed beginning at 7:20 am until 11:30. If you are arriving after 7:20 am then in order to cross the river you must use Market St Bridge. PREPARING YOUR TRANSITION AREA Get to the race early enough to set up your athlete’s Transition area location. Look for signs designating the age-group of your athlete. Locations are not reserved but there will be enough for all athletes. The race starts with the oldest and progresses to the youngest so there will be racers in the Transition. After setup, please leave the area immediately. If you arrive when a previous race is in progress, you may have to wait outside before entering to set up your transition. Only the athlete will be permitted in the transition area during the race, except for ages 4-8 when one adult may accompany the child. Be prepared to have you athlete’s helmet checked for secure fitting before entering transition (this may take extra time) Bring a towel, put the towel on the ground beside your bike and place your race equipment on it. There will be volunteers at the exit with water so your athlete can grab a quick drink while exiting the Transition Area. We will have water stops on the Run Course but the transition Area is a good place for a bit of fluid. The time spent in the Transition Area counts in the overall time so it should be as fast as is reasonable but not so fast that your athlete forges to put on the helmet or tie his/her shoes. We will have volunteers in the Transition Area to assist athletes. Make a list of what you need for race day and mark the items off as you are packing up and leaving home.
