The Laser/IPL industry is flooded with a number of different machines offering differing levels of capability. Cheaper deals which may initially look appealing quite often use older or inferior machines which subsequently end up requiring further treatment courses to achieve the desired results Often the machines that are a bigger investment to a clinic (£50k+) will cost more to maintain and replace parts and should be serviced yearly therefore the running costs will be significantly more. Your laser therapist should also have invested in high quality training making sure that they have the correct knowledge to safely carry out all of the treatments that they offer. Always check that your practitioner has their Level 4 Laser qualification before deciding to have treatment. They must also be fully insured to carry out the treatments that they are offering. Price of treatments – The prices are charged per individual area that you require treating. As an example a single underarm treatment would cost you £75 and a full leg treatment would cost £200 . Treatments can be paid for separately but because a course of sessions is recommended for best results (6-8 sessions) discount can be applied to any bookings of multiple sessions. You may also wish to explore the option to spread the cost of treatment. How the treatment works The laser beam is made up of precisely controlled pulses of energy, which are absorbed by the melanin (colour) in the hair, reaching into the active hair follicles that lie beneath the skin. The energy heats the hair – right down to the bottom of the root where a blood circulation is attached – safely destroying it without damaging surrounding tissue or skin. This process is also called photo thermal destruction. Hair Types The ideal candidate for Laser hair removal is an individual with Dark hair and light skin. This allows the machine to easily pick up the melanin content in the hair against a light skin. Dark skin types with dark hair can still be treated with the appropriate laser for their skin. People with red, blond, strawberry blond, white or very fine hair have a much harder time seeing results. This is because there is not enough pigment to absorb the laser light in the hair. If not enough laser light is absorbed, then the heat generated is too little to destroy the follicle and treatment will be unsuccessful. Also, every individual responds differently to the number of sessions required and different areas can respond quicker than others. Some clients such as those with PCOS, (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) may require maintenance treatments after a course of laser as hormonal changes can affect hair growth’Finally - I’d like to add some call to actions which I’ll provide shortly and is it possible to add a clickable table of content? Is laser the same as IPL? Although Laser and IPL can both be used for hair removal, the two types of technology do differ. Both types of technology are using light to heat hair follicles and prevent re-growth but they work in different ways. IPL technology – stands for “intense pulsed light” technology. In contrast to laser hair removal it uses a broad spectrum of light with multiple wavelengths. This means it has more unfocused energy around the hair and skin area. So, IPL uses multi-spectrum lights whereas laser use single spectrum light or “monochromatic” meaning one colour. IPL tends to require more treatment sessions and the results tend to be less effective than laser, hence the difference seen in prices between the two. Timings The length of session is dependant on the area of the face/body being treated. To use popular areas as an example an underarm session could take 5-10 minutes to carry out. Full leg hair removal would require a longer session of around 45 minutes. For best results, a full course of sessions are always recommended. Multiple sessions (often 6-8) are needed for each area being treated. This is because hair grows in 3 different stages, only one of those stages is where hair is actively growing and attached to the root of the follicle. When hair is treated in the “Anagen” phase of growth, this is the active growing phase where a blood circulation is attached to the hair, that particular hair follicle will not grow back. Two other stages of hair growth exist, namely Catagen and Telogen – hair in these stages will not successfully be treated. You should have 4-6 weeks between each facial Laser hair treatment and 6-8 weeks between each body laser hair treatment. This will follow the active hair growth cycle. Skin Types ALL skin types can be treated for hair removal but what we must be careful of is that we use the right type of machine for different skin types. IPL can safely treat Fitzpatrick skin types 1-3 (light skin) very safely but must never be used to treat darker skin types. The same is applied to some laser machines. An Alexandrite Laser for example is suitable for treating lighter skin types whilst and Nd:YAG laser is more suitable for darker skin types. Because the Laser’s chromophore (target) is melanin, machines with a shorter wavelength e.g.IPL and Alexandrite Laser at approx. at 755nm, does not differentiate as well between melanin in the hair and melanin in the skin (of which there is more in darker skin types) and can result in all of the energy simply reaching the surface of the skin, resulting in in a burn. Always check the type of Laser being used to make sure that it is safe for your skin type. All good clinics should insist on a patch test prior to commencing any treatment Hair removal methods between sessions For the treatment to work effectively the hair must NOT be removed using methods that will completely remove the hair from its follicle e.g waxing and plucking. This will disrupt the natural hair growth cycle, particularly any hair in the “anagen” phase and it will also not be a visible target for the machine to pick up. The best method of hair removal during laser sessions is shaving. Shaving also encourages any damaged hair follicles that have been treated to shed. Results There is no magic time frame when it comes to seeing results as this will be very dependant on how much hair is in the active phase of growth in a single session. Hair generally sheds around 1-2 weeks after treatment so this will be when you start to notice results. More successful results normally become more visible after 3 treatments – or halfway through your full course. What happens if there is a lockdown and my appointment gets postponed Previous sessions that have taken place will have successfully treated and removed the hair, gaps in treatment will not counteract the success of the full treatment. Once resumed after any potential lockdown, the results will continue to improve. Risks with laser Laser hair removal is safe, but it can occasionally cause side effects, such as redness and tingling, however this should last for no more than a couple of hours. It may not be suitable for everyone, including pregnant women and people with certain skin types.A medical questionnaire should be completed prior to any treatment to determine suitability. Rarely, laser hair removal can result in: pain, discomfort or tenderness red skin that may last for some time crusting, blistering, bruising or swelling of your skin lightening or darkening of your skin scarring burns from the laser’s heat bacterial infections Despite the risks, if treatment is carried out by a trained professional using equipment of a high standards, these risks are extremely rare.
