Apply weather stripping, caulking, sealants & other repairs as necessary to keep moisture out, cut down on drafts, & to keep insects out – Close or install your storm windows if available ❖ Inspect attic, basement & vents for signs of birds, squirrels, bats & other unwanted gu ests. Seal entrance holes ❖ Get your HVAC serviced twice a year. Fall is the time when your furnace is inspected & cleaned to extend the life of your system – Set up your humidifier at the same time ❖ Remember to change / clean your air filters regula rly. You can also use a vacuum with brush attachment to clean out the forced air registers & ductwork in your house ❖ Check that oven hoods. bathroom exhaust fans & dryer vents are operating properly & are clean & clear of all debris ❖ Pull your fridg e & freezers out & vacuum the condenser coils ❖ Check your sump pump & the drain line to the outside, to ensure it is working properly ❖ Check all your faucets for leaks. Dye test toilets & sink drains. Check grout & caulk around tubs, showers & all si nks ❖ Check/clean your wood burning chimney, make sure damper is working. When was the last time it was professionally inspected & cleaned? ❖ Change batteries in smoke alarms & carbon monoxide detectors. Check the expiration on your fire extinguisher . This may be a good time to review your escape plan with your family ❖ Check condition of electric cords & plugs, replace at first sign of wear or damage. Repair gaps or other damaged areas. Check/ replace w eather stripping at garage doors. Make sure the seal is tight. Not only does this keep out drafts, but small animals too ❖ Clean your gutters & down spouts, (after leaves have fallen), flush them out with water, inspect joints & tighten brackets if necessary. Replace any broken extensions so that water is properly diverted away from your home’s foundation. If replacing gutters, it is a good idea to get those with built in leaf guards ❖ Seal cracks around doors, windows, hose bibs & all other home penetration s from the exterior, re - seal & re - caulk as necessary to minimize drafts & keep insects out ❖ Inspect your roof: shingles, flashing, skylights, dormers, etc. if you see any issues, call me for the names of some recommended local roofers ❖ Inspect exte rior walls & wood trim for peeling paint or signs of wood rot, replace/repair/repaint as necessary ❖ Check the steps, supports & handrails on porches & decks ❖ Inspect your driveway for cracks, Clean / repair with driveway filler, then coat with commer cial sealer ❖ Direct drainage away from your home, soil/ grass should slope down 6 vertical inches for every 10 feet ❖ Close crawl space vents located at the foundation, if applicable ❖ Check & re - Insulate pipes outside of your home & in unheated ba sements & garages ❖ Turn off shutoff valves water supply lines to exterior faucets, drain & winterize. Fall is a GREAT time to over seed patchy areas, fertilize your lawn, & plant spring flowering bu lbs ❖ Prune your plants, pay special attention to those that are touching your home, it is best to keep all plants at least 2 to 3 feet away from your brick, siding or roof ❖ Clear the deck of furniture (& the barbeque).
