Russian War Against Ukraine: Energy Dimension DiXi Group alert (status as of 11:00, March 3) #StopRussianAggression #StandWithUkraine Ukrainian power system works in the isolated mode for seven days in a row. ENTSO-E is busy with the accelerated synchronization of Ukrainian and Moldovan systems. The dramatic situation develops near the Zaporizhzhia NPP in the city of Energodar. The local people contain the entry of invading troops with physical presence. The statements from the international organizations do not currently stop the Russian army from action that are qualified as nuclear terrorism. The enemy continues to attack, having focused a special attention on damaging residential areas and critical infrastructure. Our estimates based on the open sources are that at least 300,000 consumers have no electricity supply and at least 65,000 - gas supply. In some settlements that are shelled the situation is as bad as a humanitarian disaster. On the 7th day of the war, Ukraine's power system operates stably Power system in an autonomous (isolated) mode. The network frequency is operation maintained at 50 Hz. The evening peak consumption on March 2 was 14.2 GW for the second day in a row. The total capacity of NPPs and TPPs is 7.2 GW and 3.9 GW, respectively. Ukraine’s power system is capable to provide electricity for all consumers, with no forced shutdowns to reduce consumption. The main network facilities operate in a standard mode. Daily electricity consumption on March 1 amounted to 316 million kWh, which is 1.5% less compared to the previous day. Electricity production of NPPs increased by 0.4%, HPPs – by 23.1%, and solar facilities – by 30.1%. Production of TPPs and CHPs decreased by 13.9% and 1.4%, respectively. Only one TPP unit is under emergency maintenance. Transmission system operators of ENTSO-E are fully committed to the inevitable synchronization of Ukraine’s power system with the continental European grid. ENTSO-E members have confirmed their full understanding of the urgency of synchronization and are now focused on identifying the key conditions needed to support the electricity supply to Ukraine as a matter of priority. As of 9:00 on March 3, all of Ukraine's NPPs operate safely and Radiation safety stably. The radiation, fire, and environmental conditions at NPPs and adjacent territories remain stable and within standard limits. The most threatening situation is at the Zaporizhzhia NPP area. Currently, the Russian forces are terrorizing the NPP personnel and citizens of Energodar. Earlier, Ukraine called on the IAEA to create 30-kilometer safe zones around Ukrainian NPPs and put pressure on Russia to immediately liberate the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone and return control of all nuclear facilities to Ukraine. Accordingly, the IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi once again expressed concern over the situation and stressed the inadmissibility of any combats close to nuclear facilities. In addition, on March 3, Ukraine called on the IAEA to request NATO to establish the A2/AD (Anti Access / Area Denial) zone, given the risks and location of the NPPs, and to intensify efforts to prevent nuclear terrorism, such as the fact that the Russian forces captured the Chornobyl NPP and the Exclusion Zone. Attacks: The Russian occupation forces, having failed in almost all directions, continue to attack residential quarters, critical and social infrastructure in localities throughout the front line. As a result of the shelling in the Chernihiv region, as of 18:30 on March 2, more than 30 gas distribution networks were damaged, leaving over 6,000 consumers temporarily without gas supply. Several settlements with all the infrastructure have been destroyed by the enemy. On March 3, at about 08:10 in the Chernihiv city, the shell hit oil depot of the enterprise "Combinat Astra", causing fire of the tanks with a total capacity of 5 tcm diesel fuel. In the Zaporizhzhia region, the enemy is blowing up bridges, firing rockets and "Grad" systems on residential areas. The situation in the city of Energodar, where the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (largest in Europe) is located, remains tense. The Russian invaders are in the city and trying to negotiate with the local authorities, openly declaring their desire to seize the city and the NPP site. Almost 22,000 locals defended the station in a peaceful blockade. The damage of Energoatom for 6 days of the war, according to the acting president of the company Petro Kotin, is estimated at 18 billion UAH. In the Kharkiv region, there were 7 bombings in a day. The enemy is trying to attack the critical infrastructure, in particular CHP-5, the main heat supply enterprise of Kharkiv city. As a result of aerial attack on the city of Izyum, the gas pipeline was damaged, leaving over 40,000 people without gas supply. As a result of missile attack on the Kyiv city, leftovers of the missile, shot down by the Ukrainian Air Defense Forces, damaged the heating line in the central railway station area. According to the Kyiv Regional State Administration Deputy Head Mykola Povoroznyk, there is no threat to the municipal heat supply. In the Eastern regions, the situation remains difficult. As a result of heavy shelling, much of the city of Mariupol remains without electricity, water and heat supply. Among the civilians in the Donetsk region, as of 09:00 on March 3, 184 people were injured and 43 killed. In the Luhansk region, the enemy shelled the cities of Lysychansk, Severodonetsk and Popasna and other localities, damaging infrastructure and networks, leaving nearly 10,000 people without gas, over 42,000 without electricity, 180 multi-apartment buildings without heat and a district of Lysychansk without water supply. Countermeasures of Ukrainian companies: Ukrhydroenerho reports that the Kyiv HPP is ready, if need be, to restore electricity supply after system failure in order to cover the needs of power plants, including NPPs and CHPs, for restart. For security considerations, the aggregate covers of hydraulic units #17 and #19 were installed at the Kaniv HPP. Electricity distribution system operators ask the representatives of territorial defense forces and volunteers to coordinate with them all defensive land works, as they may affect distribution networks functioning. Disruption of supply: Gas The most difficult situation with gas supply was recorded in the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv and Luhansk regions. According to Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU), as of 11:00 on March 3, 14 out of 1389 gas distribution stations (GDS) are stopped due to hostilities. According to Naftogaz, as of 20:00 on March 2, over 5,000 consumers in the Donetsk region are without gas supply. At the same time, gas leakages were eliminated and gas supply was restored in Berezove village. Situation in the Kharkiv region has significantly deteriorated. The occupiers damaged the main gas pipeline in Izyum district. The DSO, Kharkivgaz, together with GTSOU, made everything possible to reconnect the local gas system to other GDS, but the latter hasn’t endured the gas consumption volumes. GTSOU reports that 40,000 consumers have no access to gas. Meanwhile, gas supply was restored to 1,600 households of the Kharkiv region. In the Luhansk region, on March 3, the main gas pipeline ‘Luhansk-Lysychansk-Rubizhne’ was damaged near the branch leading to Lysychansk GDS; the city is supplied through a reserve gas pipeline. Besides, as a result of hostilities, 209 consumers of Borovenky settlement were disconnected. In the Mykolaiv region, according to GTSOU Director General Serhii Makogon, distribution networks in the city of Voznesensk were damaged as a result of military activities. The company had to suspend gas supply to the city. Electricity The enemy continues to destroy the power infrastructure along the entire line of hostilities. In the last 24 hours, Russian jet artillery and aircraft have been attacking facilities in Kharkiv, Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia regions, and the infrastructure of Donetsk region has been severely damaged as well. The largest interruptions in the power supply take place: • in the Zaporizhia region, 111 settlements (49,862 consumers) remained without power supply; • in the Luhansk region, as of 08:00 on March 3, 399 substations were cut off, with 42,521 consumers without electricity, 26 settlements were completely and 21 - partially without power supply; • in the Kyiv region: according to DTEK, about 350 settlements were disconnected; • in the city of Mariupol, Donetsk region: as of March 2, 150,000 consumers without electricity, also the supply for 81,000 consumers was restored.
