Organisation s Projects 3 .1 Current Projects Current Projects: Homes – 2001 to Present Since 2001 we have cared for 30 HIV+ children in our Foster Care Homes. We have provided a caring and nurturing environment for them to grow up into productive members of society. Currently, we have 8 children who are still in school and who are studying f urther. Children’s Medical Step - Down Facility/Hospice – 2009 to Present We are a patient and family centered medical step - down facility for children and adolescents, who have been referred from hospitals and other facilities. We admit patients to our facility for further medical, palliative, rehabilitative and psychosocial care. Lambano’ s In - Patient unit (IPU) holds 16 beds and is run by 22 well - trained, experienced and dedicated staff members. The IPU team consists of a Doctor, Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Enrolled Nursing Assistants, Caregivers, a Social Worker, and a Counsellor. Services offered by the In - Patient Unit: Our services and patient care are completely holistic, and team driven. • 24 Hour Nursing Care • Advanced Care Planning • Symptom & Pain control • Nutritional support • Respite Care • Oxygen Therapy • Trachea, Feeding Tube and Wound Care • Isolation services • Palliative Care • Counselling and Social Services to assist patients and their families • Training for parents and or caregivers, on how to care for their child’s medical needs Home Based Care – 2009 to Present Services offered by the Home - Based Care Team: After the child has been discharged from our Step - Down Facility to their homes, we place them in our Home - Based Care Programme. A team consisting of a Nurse and 4 either a counsellor or social worker will visit them at home until they are stable enough to be discharged from this programme. 4. Previous Projects undertaken by Lambano: 2004: We developed training material on how to care for an HIV positive child and presented it to Foster Mothers and Grandparents once a week for 6 weeks: 2004 – 2007: We established a Clinic and Feeding Scheme, which was run once a week from a Katlehong residents home. 2007 – 2011: In 2007, we identified the need for a school feeding scheme in two schools, Mogobeng and Tamaho Primary School, in Katlehong. We applied for a grant from Naledi Projects and the Luxembourg Government through a 3 - year co - financing grant, to build a dining h all, kitchen, and storeroom in both these schools. Through the grant, both these schools were provided with food monthly to feed the children 2 meals a day. The kitchen staff were also trained on how to prepare and serve nutritious meals. The staff were a lso trained in baking skills, to make bread and cakes to sell to the community to create sustainability for themselves. These projects continue to run in 2022. 2007 – 2009: We applied for funding from Naledi Projects and the Luxembourg Government, to build a 12 Bed Paediatric Medical Step - down Facility/Hospice. In 2009 the funds were granted to purchase a house and to convert it into a 12 bed Facility. 2012 – 2015: Additional funding was procured from Naledi Projects and the Luxembourg Government to increase the beds in the Hospice from 12 to 16 beds. Two bathrooms, a treatment room, sluice, laundry, offices, and staff facilities were added to the original facility. 2017 – Current: Sustainability Project: Property for the 30 Bed Children’s Sub - Acute Facility was purchased, the Luxembourg Government purchased the property next door for a Home - Based Care Facility. After a very long delay due to the Heritage Department and the Planning Department, construction only commenced in 2022. The construction on the Sub - Acute is complete and we are waiting for the Occupation Certificate which will hopefully be the end of February 2025. The second building will be completed end April 2025. 5 5. New Projects Sustainability Project Building a dedicated 30 bed Private Children’s Sub - Acute and a mixed Medical Centre : We have built the only dedicated private CHILDREN’S SUB - ACUTE FACLITY in South Africa, this facility is be based in Kensington South, Gauteng. The Children’s Sub - Acute Facility will provide Medical, Physical and Aqua Rehabilitation Services to private patients. Once the patient has been discharged from Hospital and they requ ire further treatment, they will be admitted to our facility, until they are ready to be discharged to their homes. The main aim of opening this facility, is to ensure that the profits made at the Sub - Acute will be used to ensure that Lambano Sanctuary the NGO will be sustainable for many years to come. The NGO plays a very important role in the children’s health space in the public sector , as we are the only such facility in Gauteng as well as other provinces. The second building that is nearly complete will have a whole range of services that will complement the Sub - Acute Facility, for example a company that provides services to children who are ventilated will be in this building as well as many others.
