"All three vaccines, Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J vaccine, are critical for the city's ability to fight this pandemic and decrease deaths, hospitalizations, speed herd immunity and allow our communities to return to normalcy," said Mayoral Candidate Anthony Adams. DETROIT, Mich., March 5, 2021– The primary goal of implementing an aggressive vaccine implementation program for COVID 19 is to prevent serious illness, hospitalization (not block ICU beds), and death in our population, especially the most vulnerable. The secondary benefit is preventing the spread of the disease. All leading healthcare experts have said to take the first available vaccine (regardless of the vaccine). They have all have been approved and proven to be safe and effective. Availability of all the vaccines in Detroit's city will allow for more prevention of serious illness, hospitalizations and deaths. Additionally, by not allowing the availability of all vaccines in Detroit, you prevent the city’s ability to get to herd immunity faster, thus slowing down the potential reopening of the city’s economy and returning to a sense of normalcy. Single-dose J&J vaccine has utility in patients who only want one shot, have barriers (such as transportation, etc.) for a second visit, those who don't want an mRNA vaccine, and those who have not been able to get the two-dose vaccines, etc. By refusing the 6K doses of the J&J vaccine means that 6K fewer people will be vaccinated in Detroit, potentially causing the potential further to spread of the virus, more hospitalizations, and more deaths. It will also curtail the speed at which the city can get to herd immunity and impacts the city of Detroit's economy and viability. The J&J vaccine is a single dose because that was the original design of the study. It is currently being studied for two does. Pfizer and Moderna are two doses as that was the study's original design, and they are currently studying a single dose. The J&J vaccine was studied in a sicker population, conducted in various continents (i.e., Africa), and was studied against the variants. The J&J vaccine is the only one proven to prevent deaths by 100%. And while it's one dose had slightly lower efficacy against preventing COVID 19 than the two-dose Pfizer and Moderna vaccine, it prevents serious illness and deaths by 100%, which is the goal. All three vaccines, Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J vaccine, are critical for the city’s ability to fight this pandemic and decrease deaths, hospitalizations, speed herd immunity and allow our communities to return to normalcy. The decision by the current leadership to refuse the J&J vaccines is irresponsible as it potentially inhibits the reopening of our city’s economy, stalls the ability to spread disease, but most importantly, leaves many citizens unprotected, thus putting more lives at risk (to get seriously sick and/or die) which is preventable. Refusing could put the city at risk and liable for a lawsuit for deaths that could have been prevented due to all three vaccines' availability. We, Detroit. We Deserve Better! ###
