All the wise men approached on the banks of the Sindhu [Indus] river, the happily seated Devala, the foremost of Sages. Having approached, they (wise men) said these words. भगव JKे L नीता ?ह कथं शु /P मवा Qु युः । Eा R णः S 'T या वै Vाः शु W 0ै वानुपू व3 शः ॥ २ ॥ भगवन् –– O Sage! (literally– O possessor of blessings) म्ल े च्छ नीता –– mleccha-taken, िह कथं –– verily how शु िद्ध म् –– purity, अवा प्नु युः - may obtain (3P plural), ब्र ा ह्म णः क्ष ित्र या वै श्याः –– first 3 varnas, शु द्र श्च ै व –– and even fourth varna, अनुपू वर् शः –– in regular order 2. O Blessed one, Verily how may the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and even Shudras taken away by the mlecchas obtain purity? कथं [ा नं कथं शौचं ,ा य /0 1ं कथं भवेत् । ?क माचारा भवेयु ]े तदाच ^ स 'व ] रम् ॥ ३ ॥ कथं –– how, स्न ा नं –– bathing, शौचं –– cleanliness/purity, प्र ा य िश्च त्त ं –– expiation, कथं भवेत् –– how may be done, िक माचारा –– what conduct/behavior, भवेयु : –– may be (3P plural) ते –– they तदा –– then, च क्ष्य –– ought to be seen, स िव स्त रम् –– in detail/ complete 3. How may they all bathe, cleanse their body and do expiation? What may their behavior? then this ought to be seen in detail (described in detail). 'T श ` ु म् व ज3 ये bे शं स वc dा दशयोजनम् उ 1 रेण महान gा द hS णेन तु कi कटम् || ४ || 4. Entirety of Trisha ṅ ku country shall be avoided and 12 yojana-s north of the great river. To the south, K ī ka ṭ a shall be avoid. ,ा य /0 1ं , व ^ा 'म 'व ] रेण मह ष3 यः || ५ || 5. O great sages, I will proclaim the expiatory rites in detail मृतसूते तु दासीनां प nी नां चानुलो 'म नाम् oा 'म तु pं भवे Lौ चं मृते oा 'म ?न यौ ?न कम् || ६ || 6. On the death or birth of a child, the purification of the maids & anuloma wives shall be equal to that of the master of the house. If the master dies, it shall be on the basis of their wombs. देवल उवाच * Devala said *note– the perfect verb form for uv ā ca has been used, the perfect technically denotes remote past not-witnessed by the speaker (parokShebhuuta). अपेयं येन संपीतमभ ^ं चा 'प भ hS तम् । Kे Lै ना3 तेन 'व ,े ण अग rा गमनं क ृतम् ॥ ७ ॥ अपेयं –– unfit to be drink, येन –– by whom, संपीतम –– drunk, अभ क्ष्य ं चा िप भ िक्ष तम् –– and unfit to be eaten is also eaten, अग म्य ा गमनं –– illicit intercourse, क ृतम् –– did, म्ल े च्छ ै ः नीतेन िव प्र े ण –– by brahmins taken by mlecchas 7. When things unfit to be drunk are drunk and things unfit to be eaten are also eaten and illicit intercourse is also done by the Brahmin taken away by the Mlecchas त t शु /Pu , व ^ा 'म यावदेक ं तु व v रम् । चा wा याणं तु 'व , t सपराक ं , कi 'तx तम् ॥ ८ ॥ त स्य –– of him, शु िद्ध ं –– purity, प्र व क्ष्या िम –– I will proclaim, यावदेक ं तु व त्स रम् –– till when but one year, चा न्द्रा याणं –– The चा न्द्रा याण expiatory penance, िव प्र स्य –– of brahmin, तु – but, सपराक ं –– with par ā ka expiatory penance, प्र की ितर् तम् –– is declared 8. I will proclaim the method to purify such a Brahmin. One year of the C ā ndr ā y āṇ a penance along with the Par ā ka expiatory rite must be done. पराकमेक ं S T t पादक ृ z{े ण संयुतम् । पराका ध3 तु वै V t शू W t ?द नप } कम् ॥ ९ ॥ पराकमेक ं –– One पराक , क्ष त्र स्य –– of Kshatriya, पादक ृ च्छ्र े ण –– by the P ā dak ṛ cchra expiatory penance संयुतम् –– joined, पराका धर् –– half of Par ā ka, तु वै श्य स्य –– but of Vaishya शू द्र स्य –– of Shudra, िद नप ञ्च कम् –– five days 9. For the Kshatriya, one Par ā ka along with the P ā dakricchara expiatory penance shall be done. For the Vaishya, half of the Par ā ka. For the Shudra, 5 days. नखलोम 'व हीनानां ,ा या /0 1ं , दापयेत् । चतु णा3 म 'प व णा3 नाम थाऽशु /P र ] ?ह ॥ १० ॥ नखलोम िव हीनानां ––nail-hair-deprived of (people) , प्र ा या िश्च त्त ं –– expiation, प्र दापयेत् ––may give (3P Singular) चतु णार् म िप – even the 4, व णार् नाम – of the varnas अ न्य थाऽशु िद्ध र िस्त –– otherwise impurity stays, िह – verily 10. Expiatory rites may be given once the 4 var ṇ as have shaved off their nails and hair. Otherwise, the impurity stays verily. प्र ा य िश्च त्त िव हीनं तु यदा तेषां कलेवरम् । क तर् व्य स्त त्र सं स्का रो मेखलाद ण्ड व िजर् तः ॥ ११ ॥ प्र ा य िश्च त्त िव हीनं – deprived of prayaschitta, तु – verily, यदा – when, तेषां – of their, कलेवरम् – body*, क तर् व्य स् – should be done, त त्र – there, सं स्का रस् – rites, मेखलाद ण्ड व िजर् तः –– without mekhal ā and da ṇḍ a* 11. When their body is without expiation (prayaschitta), their rites should be done without the mekhal ā and da ṇḍ a. * note: mekhal ā is the girdle, belt worn by the fi rst 3 varnas, da ṇḍ a is the sta ff given at investiture with the sacred thread to twice-born men * note: kalevaram is cognate with “cadaver” of Latin meaning body Kे Lै न तेन शू Wै वा3 हा र ते द
मेखले सं स्का र प्र मुखं त स्य स वर्ं का यर्ं यथा िव िध || १२ || म्ल े च्छ ै : – by the mlecchas, नीतेन –– abducted, शू द्र ै वार् –– or by the shudras, हा िर ते – taken, द ण्ड मेखले –– da ṇḍ a and mekhal ā , सं स्क ा र प्र मुखं – principal rites, त स्य – of him, स वर्ं का यर्ं –– all works, यथा िव िध –– in accordance with vidhi (law) 12. When a person is abducted by the mlecchas or has the da ṇḍ a and mekhal ā taken by the shudras, for him all principal rites and all works be done in accordance with law. (again) सं ा रा े च 'व ,ा णां दानं धेनु 0 द hS णा | दात ं शु P 'म L / र गोभू 'म का } नम् || १३ || सं स्का रा न्ते च –– and on the end of the rites, िव प्रा णां – of brahmins, दानं – gift, धेनु श्च –– and cows, द िक्ष णा –– donation, दात व्यं –– should be given, शु द्ध म् = purification, इ च्छ िद्भः = desiring (by whom), अ श्व गोभू िम का ञ्च नम् = horse, cow, land and gold/wealth 13. Persons desiring purification should give gifts & donations of horse, cow, land, gold to brahmins at the end of the rites. तदाऽसौ तु क ु टु ा नां प ङ्u ,ा Qो 'त ना था | o भा याc च यथा ा यं ग L े व 'व शु 'त || १४ || तदा – then, असौ – he (within sight), तु – now, क ुटु म्बा नां – of family, प ङ्िक्त ं – persons belonging to the same caste, प्र ा प्न ो ित – he attains, ना न्य था – not any else, स्व भा यार्ं च – and his own wife, यथा न्य ा यम् = in accordance with justice, ग च्छ न् = going, habiting एव = indeed, िव शु ध्य ित = becoming pure 14. Then (on doing purification) he attains his family (of the same caste) and not any other way. And he lives with his own wife in accordance with justice indeed becoming more pure अथ संव v रादू c Kे Lै न तो यदा भवेत् | ,ा य /0 1े तु संची णB ग ा [ा नेन शु 'त || १५ || अथ – then, संव त्स रादू ध्वर्ं – greather than an year म्ल े च्छ ै ः –– by the Mlecchas, नीतः = carried away, यदा = when, भवेत् = may be, प्र ा य िश्च त्त े = expiatory rite, ग ङ्गा स्न ा नेन = with a bath in the ganges, शु ध्य ित = is purified. 15 . Then, one who has been carried away by the mlecchas for more than an year, as an expiatory rite he should take a bath in the ganges. He gets purified then. 6स 8ु सौवीरसौरा ं तथा , A वा 6स नः क /ल कौ ` णा ा Jग ा सं ा रम ह3 'त िस न्धु सौवीरसौरा ष्ट्र ं –– Sindhu, Sauvira, Saurashtra, तथा – so also, प्र त्य न्त वा िस नः — border-dwellers, क िल ङ्ग कौ ङ्क णा न्व ङ्ग ा न् –– Kalinga, Konkana, Vanga (Bengal), ग त्वा – having gone, सं स्का रम् –– expiatory rites, अ हर् ित ––are necessary (root arh means to be worthy of, to oblige) 16. For one who has gone to the lands of the Indus, Sauvira, Saurashtra also to the border-dwellers lands of Kalinga, Konkana & Vanga– expiatory rites are necessary (for him). बला bा सीक ृता ये च Kे L चा
ा लद tु 'भः | अशुभं का र ताः क म3 गवा ?द ,ा hण ?हu सनम् || १७ || बलात् — from force, दासक ृीता –– enslaved (literally meaning ”made dasa“), ये – whom, च – and, म्ल े च्छ चा ण्डा लद स्यु िभः – by the mleccha, chandala and dasyus, अशुभं –– unpious, का िर ताः ––made to do (causative verbal form), क मर् – actions, गवा िद प्रा िण िहं सनम् –– violence to cows and other animals 17. The people enslaved with force by the mlecchas, chandalas and dasyus and made to do unpious actions like violence to cows & other animals. उ L मा ज3 नं चैव तथा त tै व भोजनम् | खरो 'व राहाणामा 'म ष t च भ S णम् || १८ || उच् - िछ ष्ट – left over (food), अ जर् न – procuring, च एव – and even, तथा – thus, त स्यै व –– for that even, भोजनम् – food, खरो ष्ट्र िव ड्व राहाणाम् – ass, camel and boar*, आ िम ष स्य – of fl esh, च – and, भ क्ष णम् – the act of eating 18. And even those (people enslaved) made to consume left-over food and made to eat the flesh of donkey, camel and boar * note: var ā ha can mean – boar, hog, pig or wild boar त ी णा } तथा स ं ता 'भ 0 सह भोजनम् | मासो 'ष ते 'd जातौ तु ,ा जाप Aं 'व शोधनम् || १९ || त त्स्त्री णाम् – of those women, च – and, तथा – in that manner, स ङ्ग ं – association/contact, ता िभः च – and with those (women), सह भोजनम् – with food, मासो िष ते – lived one month (in this manner), िद्व जातौ – the twice born (first 3 varna), तु – verily, प्र ा जाप त्य ं – Pr ā japatya rite, िव शोधनम् – cleansed 19. The twice-born men who came in association with the women of the mlecchas, chandalas & dasyus & ate food with those women, who have lived for one month in this manner are verily cleansed with the Pr ā japatya rite. चा wा यणं ा ?ह ता ेः पराक थ वा भवेत् | चा wा यणं पराक ं च चरे vं व v रो 'ष तः || २० || चा न्द्रा यण – c ā ndr ā ya ṇ a penance, तु – indeed, आ िह ता ग्नेः – of the Ā hit ā gni* , पराक – par ā ka expiatory rite, अथ वा – or else, भवेत् – shall be done, चा न्द्रा यणं – c ā ndr ā ya ṇ a penance, पराक ं –par ā ka expiatory rite, च – and, चरेत् – may conduct, संव त्स रो िष तः – one year lived (with the mlecchas) 20. The Ā hit ā gni shall be cleansed with the C ā ndr ā ya ṇ a penance or the Par ā ka expiatory rite. If he has lived one year (with the mlecchas) then he shall conduct both the C ā ndr ā ya ṇ a and the Par ā ka. *note – the Ā hit ā gni is a sacri fi er who maintains a perpetual sacred fi re in the family as per vedic rites संव v रो 'ष तः शू Wो मासा धc यावक ं 'प बेत् | मासमा Tो 'ष तः शू Wः क ृ z{ पादेन शु 'त || २१ || संव त्स रो िष तः – one year lived, शू द्रो – Sh ū dra, मासा धर्ं – half a month, यावक ं – drink prepared from barley grains, िप बेत् – shall drink, मासमा त्रो िष तः – lived for one month (with the mlecchas), शू द्रः – Sh ū dra, क ृ च्छ्र पादेन – by the P ā dak ṛ cchra expiatory penance, शु ध्य ित – becomes pure 21. The Sh ū dra who has lived for one year (with the mlecchas) shall drink a drink prepared from barley grains for half a month. The Sh ū dra who has lived for just one month (with the mlecchas) becomes pure by the P ā dak ṛ cchra expiatory penance. ऊ c संव v रा ¡ं ,ा य /0 1ं 'd जो 1 मैः | संव v रै 0 तु 'भx 0 त ा वम 6ध ग L 'त || २२ || ऊ ध्वर्ं – over, संव त्स रात् – one year (from), क ल्प्य –to be prescribed, प्र ा य िश्च त्त ं – expiatory rites, िद्व जो त्त मैः – by the foremost among the twice-born (brahmin), संव त्स रै श्च तु िभर् श्च –– and by the end of four years, त द्भ ा वम – that condition (living with the mlecchas), अ िध ग च्छ ित – obtains 22. If having lived with the mlecchas for over one year, the foremost among the Brahmins should prescribe expiatory rites (for the person who has lived in excess of one year there). By the end of four years of living with them, their condition only is obtained (condition of mlecchas, dasyus and cha ṇḍ ala-s) ¢ा सो न 'व g ते य t ,ा य /0 1ं दुरा £ नः | गु ¤ क S hश रो ¥ू णां क त3 ं क ेशवापनम् || २३ || ह्र ा सो – dimunition, न – not, िव द्य ते – exists, य स्य – of whom, प्र ा य िश्च त्त ं – expiation, दुरा त्म नः – of the bad person, गु ह्य क क्ष िश रो भ्रू णां – of the genitals, armpits, head, eyebrows; क तर् व्यं –– should be done, क ेशवापनम् –– hair- shaving 23. Of the bad person for whom no expiation exists– shaving off the hair of the genitals, armpits, heads and eyebrows should be done. ,ा य /0 1ं समार ¦ ,ा य /0 1ं तु कारयेत् | [ा नं 'T कालं क ु व त धौतवासा /ज ते §w यः || २४ || प्र ा य िश्च त्त ं – expiation, समार भ्य – to be undertaken, प्र ा य िश्च त्त ं – expiation, तु – indeed, कारयेत् – may he make him perform, स्न ा नं – bathing, ित्र कालं – three times, क ु वीर् त – shall be done धौतवासा – washed-clothes, िज ते िन्द्र यः – controlled senses 24. Having undertaken the expiation, he shall indeed be made to perform the expiation. The one with controlled senses, wearing washed-clothes shall do the expiation whilst bathing thrice a day. क ुशह ]ः स A व ा देवलेन ¤ु दा ̈ तम् | व v रं व v रा धc वा मासं मासा ध3 मेव वा || २५ || क ुशह स्तः –– one with kusha grass in hand, स त्य व क्ता – speaking truth, देवलेन – by Devala, िह – verily, उदा हृ तम् – illustrated, व त्स रं – one year, व त्स रा धर्ं – half of one-year, वा – or, मासं – month, मासा धर् मेव – half of one month indeed, वा – or, 25. Devala has illustrated the one undergoing expiation to be wearing the kusha grass in hand, speaking truth. For one year, half-year or one month or half a month indeed (however long the expiation may be) बला JKे Lै ]ु यो नीत ] t शु /P ]ु कi © शी | संव v रो 'ष ते शू Wे शु /P 0ा wा यणेन तु || २६ || बलात् – from force, म्ल े च्छ ै ः – by the mlecchas, तु – indeed, यो – whom, नीतः – abducted, त स्य – of him, शु िद्ध – expiation, की दृ शी –– in what manner संव त्स रो िष ते शू द्र े –– on the Sh ū dra having lived one year (with mlecchas), शु िद्धः – purification, च – and, चा न्द्रा यणेन – by the C ā ndr ā ya ṇ a 26. The person abducted by the mlecchas with force, indeed what is the purification of him? In what manner? For the Sh ū dra having lived one year (with the mlecchas), purification is by the c ā ndr ā ya ṇ a expiatory rite. पराक ं व v रा धB च पराका धc 'T मा 6स क े | मा 6स क े पादक ृ z{ 0 नखरोम 'व व /जx तः || २७ || पराकम् = the par ā ka rite, व त्स रा धेर् = half a year, च = and, पराका धर् म् = half a par ā ka rite; ित्र मा िस क े = in/on three months, मा िस क े = a month, पादक ृ च्छ्रः = p ā dak ṛ cchra rite, च = and, नखरोम िव व िजर् तः = deprived of nails and hair, 27. For [a śū dra] having lived [with them] for half an year, the par ā ka rite [is done] and for [a śū dra] having lived for three-months, do half of a par ā ka rite. For one month of stay [with mleccha] do the p ā dak ṛ cchra. The [ śū dra undergoing the rite] must have his nails & hair cut. पादोनं S िT य tो म धc वै V t दापयेत् | ,ा य /0 1ं 'd ज tो ं पादं शू W t दापयेत् || २८ || पादोनम् = less by a quarter, क्ष ित्त्र य स्यो क्त म् = declared for a Kshatriya, अ धर् म् = half, वै श्य स्य = of a Vaishya, दापयेत् = shall be given, प्र ा य िश्च त्त म् = expiation, िद्व ज स्य = of a Brahmin, उ क्त म् = declared, पादम् = quarter, शू द्र स्य = of a S ū dra; दापयेत् = shall be given 28. [All the expiations done for a śū dra] reduce them by a quarter for the Kshatriya. For the Vaishya, one shall reduce them [expiation] by half. For a Brahmin, only one-quarter of the expiation of the Shudra shall be given. ,ा य /0 1ा वसाने तु दो «¬ी गौ द3 hS णा मता | तथाऽसौ तु क ुटुबा े ¤ु प 'व ो न दु 'त || २९ || प्र ा य िश्च त्त ा वसाने = at the finish of the expiation, तु = indeed, दो ग्ध्री = milker, गौः = cow, द िक्ष णा = gift, मता = understood, तथा = thus, असौ = that man, तु = but, क ुटुबा न्ते = within a family, िह = indeed; उप िव ष्ट ो = sitting, न = not दु ष्य ित = do corruption [he] 29. At the end of the expiatory rites, indeed, a milch-cow is the understood gift. Thus that man [having done expiation] does not do corruption by sitting within his family [after doing expiation, he can return to his family] अशी 'त य3 t व षा3 hण बालो वाऽ ¡ू नषोडशः | ,ा य /0 1ा ध3 म ह3 § यो रो 'ग ण एव च || ३० || अशी ित यर् स्य व षार् िण = a person who has eighty years, बालो वा अ िप ऊनषोडशः = or even a child younger than sixteen years, प्र ा य िश्च त्त ा धर् म् = half the expiation rite, अ हर् िन्त = are desirable, िस्त्र यः = women, रो िग णः = sick/ill people, एव च = and indeed. 30 . For the person who is eighty-years old [or more] or even a child younger than sixteen-years old; half the expiatory rite are desirable. Indeed also, [such is the case] for women women and for sick people. ऊनैकादशव ष3 t प } व षा3 ° र t च | ,ा य /0 1ं चरे द्¥ा ता 'प ता वाऽ ो ऽ 'प व 6धx ता || ३१ || ऊनैकादशव षर् स्य = of one younger than eleven years, प ञ्च व षार् त् पर स्य = older than five years, च = also, प्र ा य िश्च त्त म् = expiation, चरेत् = shall conduct, भ्र ा ता = elder brother, िप ता वा = or father, अ न्यो = someone else, अ िप = even, व िधर् ता = upbringer 31. For [a child] younger than eleven-years or older than five-years also expiation shall be conducted by the elder brother or father or someone else even [such as] an upbringer [guardian] o यं ± तं चरे v व3 म था नैव शु 'त | 'त लहोमं , क ु व त जपं क ु या3 दत §w तः || ३२ || स्व यम् = oneself, व्र तम् = austerity, चरेत् = shall conduct; स वर् म् = entire, अ न्य था = else, न = not, एव = indeed, शु ध्य ित = gets cleansed, ित लहोमम् = oblation of seed of sesame plant, प्र क ु वीर् त = shall conduct, जपम् = chanting, क ु यार् त् = shall do, अत िन्द्र तः = from resolute senses 32. One shall conduct the austerity himself and in it’s entirety otherwise indeed one does not get cleansed. The oblation of the seed of the sesame plant shall be conducted, chanting shall be done, with absolute senses. संलाप ² श3 ?नः ा ससहयानासनाशनात् याजना ा पना gौ ना °ा पं सं ³ मते नृणाम् || ३३ || 33. Sins travel among men through conversation, touch, breathe, travel, sitting, eating, sacrificing, teaching and sexual intercourse. याजनं यो ?न संब 8ं oा ा यं सहभोजनम् | क ृ ा स gः पत Aे व प 'त तेन न संशयः || ३४ || याजनम् = the act of conducting vedic sacrifices, यो िन संब न्ध म् = having womb [blood] relations, स्व ा ध्य ा यम् = study, सहभोजनम् = eating with; क ृ त्वा = having done, स द्यः = very same day, पत ित एव =falls indeed, प ित तेन = by/ from a fallen न = no, संशयः = doubt. 34. Conducting vedic sacrifices, having blood-relations, studying, dining together [with a fallen] Having done these, he immediately [one who did all this with a fallen] falls [to a low status]. There is no doubt about this. संव v रेण पत 'त प 'त तेन सहऽचरन् याजनासनय ́ा ?द क ु वा3 णः सा व3 का 'म कम् || ३५ || 35. Intermingling with a fallen one [one not purified] leads the one doing the intermingling to fall too. Conducting sacrifices or vedic rites with him, sitting with him etc also all lead to the same result. अतः परं , व ^ा 'म ,ा य /0 1 'म दं शुभम् ी णां Kे Lै 0 नीतानां बला vं वेशने μ ¶च त् || ३६ || 36. Now, I will proclaim a greatly auspicious expiatory rite. This rite is for women who were captured by mlecchas with force and then raped wherever they were taken. Eा R णी S िT या वै Vा शू Wा नीता यदाऽ · जैः Eा R ̧ाः कi © शं ा ¹ं ,ा य /0 1ं 'व धीयते || ३७ || 37. I will explain the appropriate rite for all the Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra women who were abducted by the barbarians. First, let us see in what manner the abducted Brahmin women is to be purified. Eा R णी भोजये JKे L मभ ^ं भ S ये g ?द पराक ेण ततः शु /Pः दानेनो 1 रतो 1 रान् || ३८ || 38. If the Brahmin woman feeds a barbarian or eats from his hand that which isn‘t fit to be fed or eaten - then she is purified with the P ā raka expiatory rite. Upon giving gifts, she gets further purified. न क ृतं मैथुनं ता 'भ रभ ^ं नैव भ hS तम् शु /P ] दा 'T रा Tे ण Kे Lा े नैव भ hS ते || ३९ || 39. If she has neither had sexual relations with them [the mlecchas] and nor eaten that which isn‘t fit to be eaten [among the food given to her by the mlecchas] then she is purified in three days of fasting. रज o ला यदा ²ृ ा Kे Lे ना े न वा पुनः 'T रा T मु 'ष ता [ा ा प } ग े न शु 'त || ४० || 40. If she is in her menses and touched by a mleccha or someone else, then after three days of fasting - she is cleansed after a bath and the after she has taken the panchagavya. ²ृ ºा रज o लाऽ ो ं Eा R णी S िT या तथा 'T रा Tे ण 'व शु /Pः tा bे वल t वचो यथा || ४१ || 41. If a Brahmin woman who is on her periods and a Kshatriya woman on her periods touch each other, then the Brahmin woman is purified by three days of fasting. This is the word of Devala. ²ृ ºा रज o लाऽ ो ं Eा R णी शू W जा तथा प } रा Tं ?न राहारा प } ग े न शु 'त || ४२ || 42. If a Brahmin women who is on her period and a Shdura woman on her period touch each other, then the Brahmin woman is purified by five nights of fasting and the consumption of the panchagavya. Eा R ̧ नशनं क ु या3 » िT या [ा नमाचरेत् सचैलं वै V जातीनां न ं शू Wे 'व ?न ?दx शेत् || ४३ || 43. The recommended penance for the Brahmin woman will be fasting, bathing for the Kshatriya woman, bathing with clothes on for the Vaishya woman and bathing at night with clothes on for the Shudra woman. Kे Lा ं Kे L सं ² श¼ Kे Lे न सह सं ½ 'तः व v रं व v रादू c 'T रा Tे ण 'व शु 'त || ४४ || 44. Eating prohibited mleccha food, intermingling with mlecchas and living with mlecchas for an year or more. One is purified in three days. Kे Lै ̈3 तानां चौरै वा3 का ा रेषु , वा 6स नाम् भु ¾ा भ ^ मभ ^ं वा ¿ु धा तB न भयेन वा || ४५ || 45. Those women or men abducted by mlecchas or thieves in the wilderness who ate and drank things unfit to be eaten or drunken due to hunger, thirst or fear - the expiation for them is given below. पुनः ,ा ¡ o क ं देशं चातु व3 ̧3 t ?न À ृ 'तः क ृ z{ मेक ं चरे 'd , ] द धc S िT य 0 रेत् पादोनं च चरे dै Vः शू Wः पादेन शु 'त || ४६ || 46. After having returned to our country, the expiation for all the 4 Varnas must be done. For a Brahmin, one entire Krcchara. The Kshatriya will do half of that, the Vaishya one fourth and so will the Shudra. गृहीता ी बलादेव Kे Lै गु व क ृता य ?द गु व न शु /P मा Qो 'त 'T रा Tे णेतरा शु ¶चः || ४७ || गृहीता =captured, स्त्र ी = woman, बलात् = from force, एव = indeed, म्ल े च्छ ै ः = by the mlecchas, गु वीर् क ृता = made pregnant, य िद = if, गु वीर् = mother, न = not, शु िद्ध म् आ प्नो ित = obtains purity; ित्र रा त्र े ण = by three nights; इतरा = the other, शु िचः = gets purified 47. The woman captured and impregnated with force by the mlecchas indeed does not get purified. If the woman is not impregnated [she has only been raped without impregnation] , then she is purified in three nights. योषा ग भc 'व ध 1े या Kे Lा ा मादकामतः Eा R णी S 'T या वै Vा शू Wा व णB तरा च या || ४८ || योषा = young woman, ग भर् म् िव ध त्ते =womb obtained [gotten pregnant], या = who [she], म्ल े च्छ ा त् = by a Mleccha, कामात् अकामतः = from desire or without desire; ब्र ा ह्म णी = brahmin woman, क्ष ित्र या = kshatriya woman, वै श्या = vaishya woman, शू द्रा = shudra woman, व णेर् तरा = woman from another caste, च = also, या = who [she] 48. The young woman made pregnant by a mleccha, either with consent or without consent. Such a Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra or any other- caste woman also - [What is the expiation for them?] [contined] अभ ^ भ S णं क ु या3 1 tाः शु /Pः कथं भवेत् क ृ z{ं सांतपनं शु /P घृ3 तै य¼ ने 0 पाचनम् || ४९ || अभ क्ष्य भ क्ष णम् = eating that which is not fit to be eaten, क ु यार् त् =shall do, त स्याः = of her, शु िद्धः = expiation, कथम् = how; भवेत् = shall be, क ृ च्छ्र म् = k ṛ cchra, सांतपनम् = s ā ntapana, शु िद्धः = purification, घृतैः = by ghee, योनेः = of the womb, च = also, पाचनम् = softening 49. She who eats that which is unfit to be eaten, how may she be purified? K ṛ cchra, S ā ntapana is the purification. Also by softening of the womb with ghee (clarified butter) असव णB न यो ग भ3ः ी णां योनौ ?न 'ष  ते अशु Pा सा भवे ा री याव L pं न मु } 'त || ५० || असव णेर् न = with a man not of the same caste, यः = who [male], ग भर्ः = child, स्त्र ी णाम् = of women, योनौ = in womb; िन िष च्य ते = pours down upon, अशु द्धा = impure, सा = she; भवेत् = shall become, नारी = woman, यावत् = till when, श ल्य म् = thorn, spike, न = not; मु ञ्च ित = give up, abandoned* *note: the root is √ muc = let loose, free, let go, slacken, release, liberate 50. The child conceived in the womb of women by men not of the same caste makes that woman impure. She is impure till that thorn, spike [child] is not given up or abandoned. 'व ?नः सृते ततः श pे रजसो वाऽ 'प द श3 ने तदा सा शु ते नारी 'व मलं का } नं यथा || ५१ || िव िनः सृते = gone forth out of [escaped], ततः = therefore, श ल्ये =thorn [child], रजसो = menstrual excretion, वा = or, अ िप = even, द शर् ने = becoming visible, तदा = then, सा = she, शु ध्य ते = gets cleansed, नारी = woman, िव मलम् = stainless, का ञ्च नम् = gold, यथा = like 51. When the thorn goes out [child] or even when menstrual excretion becomes visible, then she gets cleansed. The woman becomes like stainless gold. स ग भ¼ दीयतेऽ %ै o यं Ãा ¤ो न क ?हx ¶च त् o जातौ व ज3 ये g %ा vं करः tा दतोऽ था || ५२ || ग भर्ः स = that child, दीयते = to be given, अ न्य स्म ै = to someone else, स्व यम् = self, ग्र ा ह्य ो = acceptable, न = not, क िहर् िच त् = at any time, स्व जातौ = in own caste, व जर् येत् = shall caste out [abandon], य स्मा त् = from which, संकरः = mixing of castes; स्य ा त् = shall exist, अतः = because of this, अ न्य था = otherwise. 52. That child [born by mleccha impregnating women] is to be given to someone else. That child is never at any time acceptable for oneself. One’s own caste should abandon [that child]. Otherwise [if not done], progeny born of [rape] and mixing of [mleccha with hindu women] shall arise/exist. गृहीतो यो बला JKे Lैः प } षट् स Ä वा समाः दशा ?द 'वu श 'तu याव 1 t शु /P 'वx धीयते || ५३ || गृहीतः = taken, यो = who, बलात् = by force, म्ल े च्छ ै ः = by the mlecchas, स प्त वा - षट् - प ञ्च = five, six or seven, समाः = years, दशा िद = from the tenth, यावत् िवं श ित म् = till the twentieth, त स्य = his, शु िद्धः = purification, िवर् धीयते = is instructed, 53. One who was captured by the mlecchas forcibly for five, six or seven years or from the tenth till the twentieth years. His purification is instructed as follows: ,ा जाप A d यं त t शु /P रेषा 'व धीयते अतः परं ना ] शु /Pः क ृ z{ मेव सहो 'ष ते || ५४ || 54. Two Pr ā j ā patya-s are instructed as his purification. Beyond this [time spent with mlecchas], there is no purificatory rite other than the K ṛ cchara. Kे Lैः सहो 'ष तो य ]ु प } , भृ 'त 'वu श 'तः व षा3 hण शु /P रेषो ा त t चा wा यण d यम् || ५५ || 55. The expiation for the one who has lived with the mlecchas for 5-20 years is declared as such: two Ch ā ndr ā ya ṇ a rites for him are to be done. क Sा गु ¤ hश रः Å Æु ¥ू लोमप र क ृ नम् ,ा ̈ A पा hण पादानां नखलोम ततः शु ¶चः || ५६ || 56. That person should also shave off hair from his armpits, genitals, beard, eyebrows, face and also his feet. He should also cut his nails. Then he becomes pure. यो दातुं न 'व जाना 'त ,ा य /0 1ं 'd जो 1 मः शु /Pu ददा 'त चा %ै तदशु Pेः स भाजनम् || ५७ || 57. The Brahmin who doesn‘t know how to perform [give] the expiatory rites and give purification to another, that Brahmin becomes a partaker of the impurity of the impure. सभायां ² श3 ने चैव Kे Lे न सह सं 'व शेत् क ु या3 Çा नं सचैलं तु ?द नमेकमभोजनम् || ५८ || 58. Having attended an assembly [sabh ā ] with the mlecchas or having been touched by them. One shall take a bath with clothes or fast for one day. माता Kे L माग Lे È° तरो वा कथंचन असूतक ं च न t देवल t वचो यथा || ५९ || 59. If mother or father have gone to mleccha-hood [become mlecchas] however so this might be, there is no impurity on their death. Such are the words of Devala. मातरं च प र A É 'प तरं च तथा सुतः ततः 'प तामहं चैव शेष 'प
ं तु ?न व3 पेत् || ६० || 60. Thus having abandoned the mother and father [if they became mlecchas and did not come back] , the son in this manner shall pour out the remaining pi ṇḍ a offering to the other forefathers. [and not to the parents] ी णां चैव तु शू Wा णां प 'त तानां तथैव च प } ग ं न दात ं दात ं म Ê व /जx तम् ६१ 61. For women, shudras and the ones without expiation - panchagavya shouldn‘t be given with the mantras. It should be given deprived of the mantra. व Ë णो देवता मू Tे गोमये ह वाहनः सोमः Sी रे द Ì वायु घृ3 ते र 'व Ë दा ̈ तः ६२ 62. Varuna is the God in the urine, Agni [the oblation bearer] in cowdung, Soma in milk, Vaayu in curd and Ravi in ghee. गोमू Tं ता Í व णा3 याः े ताया 0ै व गोमयम् पयः का } नव णा3 या नीलाया 0ा 'प गो द3 6ध ६३ 63. Urine of a red-colored cow, dung from a white colored cow, milk from a golden cow, curd of a blue colored cow and...+[continued] घृतं वै क ृ Î व णा3 या 'व भ व3 नगोचरा उदक ं स व3 व णc tा t व ण¼ न गृ ¤ ते ६४ 64. Ghee of a black colored cow. Take all these from cows roaming in the forests and mix them. The all-color encompassing liquid produced from this mix has the capacity to restore the caste of any man. ष Ïा 'T क ं तु गोमू Tं गोमयं च क ुशोदकम् 'T मा 'T क ं घृतं Sी रं द 6ध tा b शमा 'T कम् ६५ 65. Take six parts of cow urine and cow dung and water mixed in the kusha grass. Also take three parts ghee, milk each and ten parts of curd. ± ते तु स व3 व णा3 नां प } ग ं तु स ङ्Ð या ,ा य /0 1ं यथो ं तु दात ं E R वा ?द 'भः ६६ 66. The panchagavya mixture should be prepared in such quantities in the vrata of all castes. Thereafter, the expiation should be given by the veda knowing Brahmins. अ था दापये g ]ु ,ा य /0 1ी भवे b्'व जः ६७ 67. If the person requiring expiation cannot make a gift to the Brahmins, then someone else (anyathaa) should give in his place. In this way, the one receiving purification becomes a twice-born man again. क 'प लाया 0 गो दु3 Ñा धारो Îं यः पयः 'प बेत् एष ा सक ृतः क ृ z{ः पाकम 'प शोधयेत् ६८ 68. The man who milks the tawny colored cow and then drinks her warm milk gets cleansed even if he be a dog-eater. This is the krcchara given by Vyasa. 'त लहोमं , क ु व त जपं क ु या3 दत §w तः 'व Îो रराटम Êे ण ,ा य /0 1ी 'व शु 'त ६९ 69. The man doing the Homa with mustard seeds [tila] should do japa [chanting] of the Vishnu Rarata mantra with full attention to get cleansed. ब Ò नाऽ T ?क मु े न 'त लहोमो 'व धीयते 'त ला Ó 1 वा 'त ला Ôु ¾ा क ु व ताघ ?न वारणम् ७० 70. We have said a lot, what more to say here now? Homa with the mustard seeds is declared to be done. Give the tila seeds, eat the tila seeds. Then one expiates oneself from all sin. संपादय § य 'd ,ाः [ा नं ती थ3 फलं तपः संपादी ³ मते पापं त t संप g ते फलम् ७१ 71. The man who gets his expiation done from Brahmins who accrue the holy fruits received by bathing in sacred pilgrimage spots, that man gets the fruit accrued by his Brahmins too [ones doing his expiatory procedure] ,ा य /0 1ं समा Ðा तं यथो ं देवलेन तु इतरेषामृषीणां च ना था वा Ö म ह3 थ ७२ 72. The prayaschitta [expiation] declared, laid down by Devala here is not contradictory to the teachings of the other Sages. सुव ण3 दानं गोदानं भू 'म दानं गवा 6× कम् 'व ,े ¦ः सं , य Lे त ,ा य /0 1ी 'व शु 'त ७३ 73. If a person doing expiation or desiring it gives money, cows, land to Brahmins then he becomes purified too.
