They grew up in the 90s, surrounded by their Their first free Ep Reworx out in late father’s vinyl's, tapes and Afro-American ‘Compact 2014, stands as a testimony for their Disc’. While being teenagers, Lucas and Adam started to musical inspiration: from Al Green to Justin Timberlake, D’Angelo, Bill play the guitar and the bass, echoing back to the music Withers or even the King of Pop. The they grew up with. Even though the brothers had a late Krab touch is made from debut, their ardour quickly took them to joining jam uncluttered restyled hits. With the sessions in Marseille. While Adam added playing the first opus called « All in », the piano to his skills, it all fell into place when Lucas siblings show their desire to truly debuted singing. With their first demo it became clear and sincerely open up. that writing and composing together was natural. Having a brotherly group was then the obvious next step. King Krab was born. 01 Back in 2010, when they were trying to find a name during a rehearsal, Adam kept his bass on, and was laying his hand over the strings and he was running his fingers on the fretboard from time to time. His long fingers made Lucas think about a crab leg, so he simply said “king crab” as they needed a name. Later they changed the spelling to KING KRAB, to not be mistaken with the animal on the search engines. At the beginning they were trying to joke around seafood stuff when making visuals, and logo, but they quit doing it very fast, because it was a little bit too childish. In 2012, they only had one song written, they were granted an opportunity to record it in a professional studio, in Paris, a few weeks after winning a cover contest on the internet. At this place, there were 2 floors with one studio on each. At the lowest floor, they met Adam Bastard, who was running his studio and listening to what they were doing in the studio upstairs. 2 months after their session, he reached out to them on Facebook, he wanted to know if they had more demos. Which they sent to him a few things which they had left on the hard drive. He loved it and offered to produce an album with for them, as he was running his own label, Uptone Records. From there, they went to Paris on a regular basis to record the album and thanks to Adam they were able to meet some of the best musicians there to help them. The 1st Album named « ALL IN » came out in 2016. 02 Growing up in the late 80s and early 90s, they grew up listening to pop legends from that era. Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Prince, George Michael. they loved bands like Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & the Gang, Maze ft. Frankie Beverly, George Benson, George Duke, Marcus Miller, to name a few. But all of this was before they got into D’Angelo (quite late, actually, around 2003). “The album Voodoo changed our lives. from that time, we knew that we wanted to do music like this”. That’s how they got deeper into the roots of soul music. with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, James Brown and Bill Withers, what they loved from the 2000s was also the Justin Timberlake/Pharell Williams/Timbaland productions era. And today they are following musicians like Thundercat, Louis Cole, Troy Kingi, Tom Misch, John Mayer, there’s so many people making great music that inspires them. When it comes to their song writing process, they start by making a beat on Logic, then add a chord progression, and a bass line to have the basic material. from there, they try to catch a feeling, an emotion out of it and then they work on the lyrics. simple things but poetic, clever, and down to earth. They mostly talk about what they know. Which includes relationships, childhood/teenage memories and love. 03 King Krab states that if they could change anything in the industry they would most certainly change the speed, The whole system goes so fast, today you have to release some music every 6 months to not be forgotten, how can you think about an album concept in 6 months. People don’t care about albums anymore, they listen to one song and switch to another. The way to conceive music at the very beginning is completely different now, they have to be fast and make efficient music which can be very frustrating. They are currently finishing their second album. the release can be expected around Fall of 2021. they will be streaming live concerts when the album is out. Photo Credits Floyd Renton : @floyd.renton Emmanuel Simon : @atelier_yuman 04 Lee Leandrea Carroll Lee started her musical journey when she was 7 years old, it all took off as a joke. Her cousins would be in one room playing around freestyling to different beats and she would hear them and one day she decided to try it too and it didn’t go as planned, she then started writing rap lines which she forever bodied and came back to spit the lines for her cousins and they said she should keep going with it so she wrote more raps and started watching other rappers her age with her mother which helped her carve her path with guidance from family and peers. She didn’t keep it going after that though and ended up quitting music and then it just all came back when she turned [10] years and she started to really get passionate about it. As a little kid she always loved music and loved listening to music but she never knew that she had the skill to write till age 7 . 05 Usually her creative thoughts come early in the morning. She starts her day off with coffee or tea to get some energy then she listens to a few beats and whatever beat suits her mood for the day she writes on it. “I get in the zone to make my songs by first listening to a beat and just thinking about how that beat makes me feel and then lyrics just come to me”. Being on the internet and being able to post my stuff on Instagram and YouTube and getting positive feedback has actually made me want to keep going and keep spreading the positive message I’m trying to spread because I notice I have so many people rooting for me and so many people listen to my music and get help from it. but I do feel that the internet is the whole reason why I’m at the level of skill I’m at right now because if it wasn’t for being on the internet and watching other rappers and getting to listen to other artists I wouldn’t have been able to study other artists or look up to anyone when I was younger. She just released a track and a music video featuring Quavo from the trio group Migos which has been doing great on the charts. She hopes to have a full on music career with her current release, she wants to tell her story to the world and continue spreading positive energy with through her music, her end goal is to make a name for herself as a unique artist. 06 BABYBRYN He started his journey as dancer, then later decided to pursue his journey as rapper and he is currently working at InCityInk and he is the founder/owner of TattooMusic, He attended hip hop dancing lessons at State theatre, as soon as classes were done most people around him were busy with rap battles and he always found it interesting how they would get vocal on an instrumental or beat box, which led to him downloading beats and started writing on them to perfect his craft and since then he hasn't looked back. Babybrryn’s muse when it comes to creating contents comes from the likes of Drake and many more, he states that he is not knee deep on collaborating with other musicians yet, as he is also on his come up unless if the product is really dope then he is down to collaborate. 07 Most artists focus more on music and other entertainment sections but when it comes to Babybrryn he would definitely be in college pursuing education. I’m not really an athlete, I struggled when it came to my academics, but I managed to study the game. I think people should take interest in learning cause that definitely enriches their skills on learning how to survive. It’s great to become successful but you must maintain success by studying further to secure a better spot in life for you and your people. The future looks bright for the upcoming artist as he is set to drop more content this year. With a good response from his peers and other people that support him, his boss even plays his music to his famous friends and clients to help him get to the top. 08 Basik Leonorah Moyo Basik was raised in a plot/farm in Centurion, she states that she is a farm girl but her work speaks differently, she is currently based in Johannesburg. She is a self-taught creative & technical professional. Her experience runs in editorial and creative direction for digital production and post-production. She has worked on branded, promotions and commercials, documentary, film, music videos, case study videos, and experimental videos. During this process, she is fully involved from conceptualizing to casting, styling, shooting, editing and sound design. 09 When it comes to accomplishments she states that there are many lessons she still has to learn. I mean I am 23 years old so I still have a lot of to see and overcome, (maybe this might be my Jordan year). Although I must say with a tough upbringing living through poverty and having hopes for a better life, I think that’s what pushed me to go after my dreams. To live a little because life is so short you know. She draws inspiration from her being alive, which gives her the momentum to grind harder and continue to strive, with her being an introvert, it’s comfortable for her to communicate in this form. She also loves observing and re-enacting by doing so she gets to give out a message to many at one go. With that being said, she states her thoughts on how being alive and going through every obstacles day to day is her current biggest accomplishment. 10 DOPEDIT HOME OF WAVES & FLAMES RhuXie Rhulani RhuXie is a [15] year old South African Musician born and raised in Bloemfontein, Free State. He started writing songs around grade [4] with inspirations from his cousin’s stepdad. “I remember going to my cousin’s house every weekend just to make beats and watch my uncle in the studio.” As a kid he always knew he would never work for somebody else nor would he work in a office. All that came up after he realized that he didn’t want to do anything else but make music when he was in grade 7 that was the year RhuXie started following his passion. He started getting noticed by the people around him and Bloemfontein in general after his two most popular singles ‘20 Moons’ & ‘Backwoods also Roses’. His music career started taking off when he got signed to Untitled WaVe and ESR Records. 11 In this music industry you need to develop a new sound for yourself instead of building up on a sound that's already there. After releasing my recent song titled “STARS” I knew how I was going to approach this new sound of mine. I go for a melodic / auto tune vibe while still trying to achieve heavy punchlines and bars that will relate to the energy around the selected song. It’s crazy how STARS was created, I was chilling with one of my closest friends next thing I know I started humming and delivering my vocals as a high pitched note in the beginning of the song and after that I knew things were about to go upside down. That song really changed my life and the way I viewed myself in this music industry. RhuXie has an upcoming album titled Black, [Black] is a project he’s been planning on working on since he started with his music career, it’s original name was supposed to be [PINK WRLD] but he then decided to call it [Black] because he believes it’s going to be his breakout album. 12 Future Nhlamulo Mabasa Nhlamulo Future Mabasa is a 25 year old model/secondary school teacher at Acornhoek in Bushbuckridge (Mpumalanga). She grew up in the rural area of Bushbuckridge. Growing up she always dreamt of being a fashion designer, because of how clothes made her feel. she did not have many pieces of clothing but she always managed to make many outfits out of them, all that fulfilled her. She realised from then that it does not matter how little you have but how the little you have can be expanded to find happiness. She also fell in love with modelling because of her love for clothes. As much as she loved fashion, she also fell Inlove with being a teacher because of the teachers she had. The teaching profession gave her an opportunity to be more aware of the issues that learners go through each and every day. Issues that she also struggled with as a child. “Growing up in a community were talking about the issues that teenagers go through was a taboo to parents or guardians, school was the only one place where I learnt about the changes that will happen to my body as I grow into becoming a woman and to talk about issues that exist in rural communities”. 13 “For one to succeed, one has to be willing to overcome fears that have been holding them back”. These are the words that I am carrying with me going into this competition. She states that her reason for entering Ms Unseen International was so she take action with dealing with her fear of public speaking. She has always wanted to enter a beauty pageant but the fear of not being able to maintain or keep the standards of the title if she was to win has been holding her back. Nhlamulo is aiming to be a beacon of hope to her learners. she desires to play the big sister role to all of them since she’s the only girl child at home. Her hope to setting a good example to my learners that you are never too old to conquer fears and taking a leap of faith to achieving goals. Ms Unseen International will be a great platform for her to reach her goals as an educator to unprivileged learners in the rural community of where she teaches and where she stays in Thulamahashe. She is aiming to start a workshop where learners will be able to feel free to talk about the issues that they go through either at school or at home also Traditional related issues, including issues of personal hygiene and issues of abuse, life choices are not appropriately addressed in many homes. I always experience severe period pains that force me to stay at home during my period. Since I was raised by my grandmother who is old-fashioned, she pressured me into having a child in order to cure my severe period pains. I was only 17 years old when this was advised to me. I felt lost and confused that I approached my principal about it. I did not feel comfortable or ready about having a child whereas I was a child myself. The principal was able to reason with my grandmother and I went on with my education without the pressure from my grandmother. With issues like these amongst the community, learners need to be able to freely talk to someone about them, given that they spend a lot of time at school. The workshop will be a safe haven for discussing such issues with them, while educating them about their bodies and how to look after themselves. Most importantly in motivating them to become the best version of themselves. All change starts with facing the root of the problem and tackling issues. Ms Unseen international has partnered with Stand United SA to raise awareness about Gender-Based violence. As a semi-finalist, she will be raising awareness around the issues of Gender-Based violence, also the misconceptions about gender-based violence. Every gender goes through abuse, lets not turn a blind eye to it and help fight it. 14 Get In Touch With us @[email protected] @bigbangmag_za @bigbangmag_za @bigbangmagZA 072 323 0482 2021 © BIG BANG MAG All RIGHTS RESERVED Writer Andiwa Ziqubu Creative Director Andiwa Ziqubu Editor Andiwa Ziqubu
