Sadness: Acceptance and Self-compassion Aide (SASA) Sadness is an emotion that maybe relates to feeling a lack of meaning, being depressed or losing something or someone. The purpose of this tool is to help you keep the sadness you're feeling in proportion. Maybe you won't stop being sad right now, but maybe you can accept the feeling. If you have felt really sad for five days or more consider seeking professional help! Your wellbeing is important! Emotions may seem like an obstacle to your goal of gaming sobriety, but understanding these emotions and accepting them – without identifying with them – will ultimately be a big part of succesful sobriety! 1. Name the feeling(s) you're experiencing right now: Examples: Lonely, heartbroken, disappointed, unhappy, resigned, lost, hopeless, troubled. 2. Know that it's OK to feel bad. You have made a big change in your life, so it's understandable if your feelings have changed too. Try to accept these feelings by acknowledging their existence, and know that you won't always feel this way. 3. Is there anything small you could do despite feeling bad, that would help you tomorrow - like taking out the trash or doing the dishes? 4. Did it help? Can you do another thing? 5. Here are a couple activities, that might help you feel better or regain a sense of meaning: • Ask someone if you can help them – it feels good to be useful • Find a short mindfulness meditation on youtube • Go for a run or a walk – exercise helps • Take a hot bath • Listen to some good music • Spend time with friends or family • Read a book • Make a nice meal for yourself
