Gwernymynydd & Cadole Newyddion y Pentrefi - Community News - Spring/Summer 2021 Retirement wishes to our Postie Gwernymynydd and Cadole residents say goodbye to our lovely Postman, Alan Pritchard, who is retiring at the end of June. Alan has been delivering mail to our community for the last 8 years and has become more than just a postie to many residents. Local resident Lorraine Smallwood explained, ‘Alan has been a wonderful support for me and many other people in the village over the years. He has often gone above and beyond the call of duty, checking on residents to en- sure their welfare which has been critical during the Covid 19 Pandemic. She continued ‘He offered my family his support when Cedwyn became poorly. Cedwyn looked forward to his daily visits which brought us all much comfort during a very difficult and sad time. He isn’t just our postman; he has become our friend and I shall miss our morning chats and his cheery face’. Alan plans to spend more time with his three grandsons, who live in Yorkshire. We wish Alan a happy, healthy and long retirement and thank him for his support and friendship to our communi- ty over the years. New Councillor appointment Congratulations and welcome to Councillor Andy Hughes who was recently elected in the May ‘By Election’ winning with over 75% of the vote. Following his election, Andy said ‘A huge thank you, for those of you who have trusted me to represent you on Flintshire County Council. It's an honour that comes with huge responsibility and commitment of which I am ready for as I prepare to be the voice and support to the entire community.’ Andy continued ‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing team I had during the election campaign; my amazing ever-present mum Sally; Nan- cy Matthews, who shared her vital experience and advice; and Vicki Shinks who was fantastic behind the scenes. Wet wipe misery – stop the block! Residents are kindly reminded not to dispose of wet wipes down the toilet. Just a single wet wipe is enough to start a blockage in your sewer pipe and risks causing catastrophic flooding in your home resulting in significant distress and cost, but by doing what's right, you can stop the block and so all wipes, sanitary items, cotton buds and nappies should be thrown away in the bin. This huge mass of wet wipes was recently removed from a sewer at significant cost and time to a local resident, filling ten bin bags! It took crews from Welsh Water three days to clear. Remember: only flush pee, poo and paper down the toilet. Further information can be found at www.dwrcymru.com Gwernymynydd Village Centre AGM Residents are advised that the Annual General Meeting of the Gwernymynydd Village Centre takes place on Tuesday 8th June 2021 at 7.00pm. All residents are invited to attend the meeting which will be held in the Village Centre, Ruthin Road, Gwernymynydd, CH7 4AF. The Management Committee is made up of the following members: 1 member of Flintshire County Council 2 members of Gwernymynydd Community Council 7 representatives of the Community All of whom are trustees registered with the Charity Commission. The Management Committee are able to co-opt up to 4 additional members representative of voluntary organisations within the community. Any nominations for the Management Committee (Trustees) to be sent to: Rhiannon Denham, 6 Heol y Wern, Gwernymynydd, CH7 4AH, or email: [email protected] Remembering Kevin Hughes The Community Council have had several discussions about what we could do to remember the much-loved late Councillor Kevin Hughes. Two ideas from these discussions are: 5k Village walk In January lots of people and their families walked 5k as Kevin’s son Andy along with his brothers Steve and Chris had been doing whilst Kevin was ill, following Kevin’s own exercise programme. The Community Council are therefore proposing a ‘5k Village Walk.’ Calendar We all remember the lovely photographs that livened up the village newsletter, so the council are proposing a photographic competition with the winning pic- tures to be included in a calendar Further details are yet to be worked out, so watch this space for more details! Gwernymynydd Community Primary School Plant Swap Table Many of you will have noticed the ‘Plant Swap Table’ near the Junior gate at Gwernymynydd CP School. It has been provided by Outside Lives Ltd as a community project for Classes 1 & 2 to Oversee. The idea is for people to put any extra plants that they may have on the table, so that others can make a small donation in return for taking a plant. The project is for everyone living in the area. The children have been very busy growing plants, howev- er, at the moment we do not have any big enough to add to the table, so if anyone would like to begin donations, we would love to see the table being used. There will be a piggy bank to put your coins in when it has been fired in the kiln, until then we will put a pot out each day. The children will be responsible for counting the mon- ey and deciding which charity the money will be donated to. Village Bus shelter There has been a request from several residents in the community for a bus shelter to be erected at the bus stop near the Village Centre, for passen- gers travelling towards Ruthin. (Opposite the cur- rent bus shelter heading towards Mold). Passen- ger numbers have increased significantly in recent times. Following this, Flintshire County Council officers have been to inspect the site and have now re- ferred the matter back to the Community Council. The cost of the bus shelter will be in excess of £6,000, and following discussion, it would have to be shared between the Community Council and the County Council. Following the referral back to the Community Council, the subject will be discussed at upcom- ing Council meetings with further information available in due course.
