Diamond Lace Knitting Texture The Diamond Lace texture is a good pattern for autumn [fall] because it looks like little acorns. If you’re incorporating it into a design, remember that we start knitting at the base of the acorns and work upwards. Project idea: Pick a leafy colour and make an autumn scarf. Quick knit: Make a mini scarf for a child’s favourite toy. The Diamond Lace pattern is often given as a 12-row repeat (centre). We’ve converted this to different scales so that you can choose the one that best suits your project. For those who like to knit small items such as dolls’ clothes, the smaller 8-row repeat (left) is best. For a bolder design, use the 16-row repeat (right). How it works This texture relies on decreases and yfwd increases to create holes and decorative slants. The three decreases are: • k2tog – this slants to the right i.e. / • sl1k1psso – this slants to the left i.e. \ • sl1 k2tog psso – this is a combination of the two above, i.e. a double decrease. It creates the shape ^ It’s easy to misread sl1 k2tog psso as sl1k1psso, so I’ve underlined it to avoid confusion. An alternative left-leaning decrease is ssk: slip 1 knitwise, slip a 2nd knitwise, transfer both back to left needle then k2togtbl. This produces an effect almost identical to sl1k1psso, so feel free to substitute it if you prefer it. Here are sl1k1psso stitches forming a slant to the left. Here you can see the double decrease where the two slants meet. Here are the k2tog stitches forming a slant to the right. © Snoo’s Knits 2019. All rights reserved. So / means k2tog, \ is sl1k1psso and ^ is sl1 k2tog psso. A circle means yfwd. On knit rows you’ll be reading from the right-hand side of the chart to the left. Each square is one stitch. You’ll see that on the right-hand side, where we start, there’s a stitch before the repeat begins. The boxed area is the repeat. On the left is the final time we work the pattern – you can see that one of the stitches has changed to make the pattern symmetric overall. If you don’t like reading the charts, just follow the written instructions. Stitches used: k2tog – knit two stitches together sl1 k2tog psso – slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit next 2 sl1k – slip 1 stitch knitwise: insert your right needle as if stitches together, then pass slipped stitch over the k2tog. to knit, but slide the stitch from the left needle to the yfwd – without taking up a stitch, bring the yarn anti- right needle without knitting. clockwise around your right needle (in the same motion sl1k1psso – slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit the next stitch, you would use when knitting a stitch.) This creates a then pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. You loop which will form an extra stitch when we purl it on may also be familiar with this abbreviated “skp”. the next row.
