Updated: 17 th March 2023 Job Description: Deputy Manager A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for someone to join the Winstone’s Hunting Raven Books team. The Deputy Manager will provide essential support in managing the shop and will play an instrumental role in growing and developing the business. Together with the Manager, the Deputy Manager (DM) is responsible for administering the operations of the bookstore, providing supervision and leadership to bookstore staff, and helping to organize and lead events and projects. The role is customer service orientated, so excellent communication skills and a customer- focused outlook are essential. The DM will be innovative and creative; identifying opportunities to help the business grow, and offering solutions to any challenges that arise. The twin key functions of the DM are: To support the Manager in the running of the shop – maintaining and overseeing the highest standards of presentation and helping to create a welcoming and inviting shopping environment with a strong sense of identity To support the Manager in developing areas of the business off of the shop floor – such as events, subscriptions, book clubs and other bookselling initiatives Reporting: Reports to the Manager Responsible for Booksellers Major Responsibilities/Duties: Assist in the buying of books and general merchandise for resale Process stock; checking margins, accuracy of invoices, and condition of goods Manage stock levels through effective buying, returns and use of reports Help to create and maintain a unique sense of identity in the shop; leading the team in clever curation, creative displays, special promotions and regular use of reviews (media reviews and bookseller recommendations) Ensure merchandising is at the highest standard Updated: 17 th March 2023 Maximize potential sales through use of data, knowledge of titles and trends in the book market, and attuning to local tastes Use bookstore computer management systems (Gardlink, EPOS, Nielsen etc.) to manage and sell stock Open and close the shop, cashing up, and banking Assist in management admin including the processing of monthly invoices and credits, and maintaining rotas and annual leave records Assist in analysing data, using it to inform decision making and to track performance Assist in organising and hosting author events, book clubs and bookfairs. Must be comfortable with running and hosting events independently Assist in project planning and delivery; managing and sharing information systematically with the Manager and other stakeholders Help manag e the shop’s social media accounts and website/webshop; creating engaging and creative online content that reflects the shop ’ s voice and identity Supervision and Leadership: Assume full responsibility of the bookstore in the absence of the Manager Plan and supervise day-to-day activities of staff; managing and allocating workload to help meet priorities and uphold standards Approve, monitor, and report holiday and other staff absences under the direct supervision of the Manager Work with the Manager to develop strategies to grow and strengthen the business Manage and host events and deliver excellent care to visiting authors Desirable skills: Must be fully computer literate and competent at learning new computer- based systems (full training will be given for specific bookstore platforms) Good working knowledge of Word, Excel and other common programs. Digital design skills are a definite plus. Skilled at using social media and ability to create engaging online content and marketing materials Experience in project management Essential Must love books!
