My friend, and the guy who owned the ten foot aluminum tinner didn’t seem fazed. “The wind is blowing us towards the shore” he calmly explained. “Hopefully the cottages there will have some gas and we can get home” As it turned out, he knew the cottage and the owners where we came ashore. They warmly welcomed us as we headed up the stairs for a beer. If this family was inconvenienced by our arrival right on dinner time, they didn’t show it and before long, it was decided we were staying for a meal. The cottage had fabulous views to the West and we sat on the deck drinking icy cold beers watching the sun sink in an orange glow until the bugs attacked and we headed inside for food. Their kitchen was the ‘engine room’ of their cottage and you could tell it was much loved and well used as we were invited to plate up and take a seat at the big dining table. I remember thinking to myself how amazing it would be to have a cottage on this lake and cook up a feast for friends. Great food and great company is the ultimate celebration. It’s funny but ever since that day, I think food just tastes better at the lake. Sitting at the table on that night I thought about all the amazing meals that had been created in that kitchen over generations. It was a life-changing experience. In the years since that first impromptu cottage supper, I’ve been very fortunate to be a part of many memorable dinners with friends on Four Mille Lake. I’ve feasted on the most amazing ribs, stunning lasagna, steak that tastes better than The Keg, more amazing chilli than I could shake a stick at and delicious fish caught fresh from the lake. ...so, just in case you don’t know, there are some very talented cooks on our lake. That’s why I’m hoping these amazing cooks will share their favourite recipes with us in the Cottage Cookbook we’re putting together this month. We’re calling it the Four Mile Lake Family Favourites Is there anything like getting together with friends and family for a great meal on the lake? Imagine having your very own FML delicious meal resource on hand whenever you need a little culinary inspiration!
