Oye Joins Forces with NAACP to Amplify DC Statehood Atlantic City, NJ — Following the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s 113th National Conference, US Representative Oye Owolewa (DC) expresses gratitude for their continued support for DC Statehood. As one of America’s longest tenured and premiere organizations dedicated to full civil rights and protections for all Americans, the NAACP has stepped up for the 700,000+ Americans living in our nation’s capital without voting representation. As a guest of NAACP DC Branch President Akosua Ali, Rep. Oye was able to speak with National President and CEO Derrick Johnson, elected officials, and activists to discuss today’s most pertinent issues. Rep Oye was also able to participate in events addressing voting rights, labor protections and strategies to preserve our democracy. Towards the conclusion of the national conference, Rep. Oye pledged to join the District of Columbia Branch to amplify the fight for DC Statehood and push for progressive policies. Rep. Oye has helped increase vaccine access to DC residents during the pandemic, implemented science enrichment programs in DC public schools, and addressed environmental justice by aiding in the restoration of DC's federal parks. He submitted 2 resolutions to Congress and co-wrote a resolution to the Department of Justice leading to their landmark decision to allow COVID compassionately released non-violent offenders to serve the remainder of their sentences at home.
