All funds raised will go towards supporting the library, but even more importantly, we will get books to local children to increase reading. Subway Cleaning 2023 This is a call for volunteers to help clean the subway on Saturday 7th October at 11am. The Forest Hill Society will provide buckets and cleaning materials. Please bring gloves and possibly a couple of old sponges. This job has taken less than an hour in previous years to make the underpass shiny and clean but it needs plenty of helping hands, so please consider if you might be able to give a helping hand. Forest Hill Society AGM All members and non-members are welcome to attend our Annual General Meeting in person or via Zoom on Tuesday, 17th October from 7:30pm at Forest Hill Library (Dartmouth Road). The AGM is an opportunity to find out more about what is happening in Forest Hill, to share your concerns and to help shape the future of the Society. For details of the zoom meeting or if you are interesting in discussing any of the roles in the Society or how you can get more involved, please email: email@foresthillsociety.com Community Leaders Needed At the AGM in October we elect the new committee for the Forest Hill Society. We are always keen to have new members on the committee, as well as existing members who wish to continue. We are fortunate to have a committee consisting of many people who are passionate about Forest Hill and making a difference to benefit the area. The most visible way this can be seen is the planting and maintenance of plants around the town centre and we particularly need new volunteers to help with planting and maintenance of the plants. Having more members on the committee means we get a better idea of what is important to you and the everybody in the community. And it also means more people to help at events and in campaigns. We are particularly looking for people with an interest in the following areas: Environment - including planting and gardening around the town centre and looking at ways to improve air quality in the local area Transport - including improving roads for pedestrians and cyclists, ensuring Forest Hill is well served by public transport, and considering flight paths over Forest Hill Planning and Development - including developing long-term plans for the town centre, and also reviewing planning applications in the area. Communications and Events - including contributing to our newsletter and arranging events for the community (e.g. book sales, gin tasting, history talks, pub quizzes Christmas tree lighting and carols). This is a great time to get involved in the good work that the Forest Hill Society does and help us do more over the next year. You can put your name forward for the committee in one of two ways: 1. Email email@foresthillsociety.com to let us know you wish to stand 2. Join us at the AGM and raise your hand when we ask for nominations Perry Vale Ward Assembly Thursday 28th September, 6:30pm at Sydenham Gardens, 28a Wynell Road. Spaces are limited so book below! Traffic Monitoring The Forest Hill Society plans to collect detailed traffic data on the cars, vans, bikes and pedestrians that currently use the streets around Devonshire Road . This is in order to inform our efforts to have Lewisham Council reduce rat- running, and improve active travel choices, plus give residents access to their streets again in this part of Forest Hill. The Society will be purchasing a number of Telraam devices that not only count the traffic, but will also give an idea of the speed of cars on our streets. If you live in the area and would be willing to put a device in your window to help us collect this data, please contact us at email@foresthillsociety.com Flight Path Planing Inquiry The Forest Hill Society has been at the forefront of campaigning in South East London on the issue with flight paths - with planes to Heathrow and City Airport crossing paths above our homes. Newham Council recently rejected plans to extend weekend flying hours to City Airport but this is being challenged by the airport, with a planning inquiry taking place later this year. Forest Hill Society has worked closely with HACAN East and we encourage members to support them to have a community voice at the inquiry. You can find out more and support their fundraiser here Library Volunteers Needed The library is looking for new volunteers to help staff the library. If you have a bit of time to give to the community, helping in the library is a great way to support children's literacy, job applicants with limited computer access, and many other activities. You don't need to commit more time than you want but every volunteer makes a difference. Volunteers all tell us how rewarding it is to help people and meet other volunteers. If you might be interested in volunteering please email rota@fhlibrary.co.uk to find out more.
