Our Generation Mental Health CURSOR 5.0 | VOLUME 5 ISSUE 1, JANUARY 2023 What does one understand by the term mental health? I am sure the old generation isn’t so friendly with such a thing because then it wasn’t a social issue to raise. So, to put it simply, mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, which determines how one thinks, feels, and acts. Many external factors affect our emotions leading them to make us feel differently. Positive aspects bring out our well-being; in other words, good mental health is when you feel positive. But in today’s time, mental health is a serious topic. According to research, Gen Zers are currently the most stressed-out generation. 90% of Gen Z members, according to the American Psychological Association, suffer from psychological or physical ailments as a result of stress. 70% of people experience anxiety and/or depression. Furthermore, 30% of the parents who responded to the study said their child was having negative effects on their emotional or mental health. The Pandemic was one of the most extraordinary events in human history that Gen Z witnessed firsthand. Many people have expressed how the Pandemic has harmed them. Anxiety is the main mental health problem affecting Generation Z, and 78% of them are also dealing with depression. Many more problems are faced by this generation, namely ADHD, PTSD, OCD, Bipolar disorder, personality disorder, eating disorder, and BDD. As mentioned before, it has been a severe issue. The reason behind it is the societal pressure mixed with parents’ expectancy and many other crucial elements. Old generations might not be well aware of it, but many turn a blind eye to such issues. Because more than four in five Gen Zers believe their generation deals with more mental health concerns than earlier generations, many young people choose to talk to strangers over their parents. As a result, they are comfortable discussing mental health. Gen Z developed during a difficult time. A significant portion of Gen Z—nearly 90%—doesn't believe that their generation has been prepared for success, which adds to their already considerable stress. Due to our fear of raising our stress levels, many of us believe we are not financially stable and are not prepared to enter the labor. 57% of already suffering teenagers are unprepared to face the world as they feel stuck in the loop of fear. A long path is ahead, and each generation must cooperate to create a brighter future that benefits all. Opening up about hardships and obstacles while considering that you are not alone is necessary to begin such a future. CURSOR 5.0 | VOLUME 5 ISSUE 1, JANUARY 2023 By : Palakk (2021-24; 21030121125) Not A Philosopher I have a very individualistic way of thinking. I do not like to align my thoughts with any moral system and a majority way of thinking. I like to keep my thoughts away from all the tampering forces in society. I do not like myself being involved in a mob mentality or belief. I tend to look at things more critically than I am expected to and I guess that is why philosophy intrigues me, it tickles the curiosity in me. It exposes me to all sorts of opinions and points of views. It lets me soar into the skies and helps me see life from a third person’s perspective. Reading a book of philosophy is like travelling the depths of reality with a shrewd free thinking individual, also known as a philosopher. A lot of German philosophers have caught my interest in recent times. I have been reading and listening to the thoughts of philosophers like Arthur CURSOR 5.0 | VOLUME 5 ISSUE 1, JANUARY 2023 Schoppenheur and Friedrich Nietzche. Both of them lived a very singular life, they lived alone and thought with utter honesty. Their philosophies contrast in some sense and coincide in some other, while reading I realized that Schoppenheuer was a pessimist and Nietzche was more or less an optimist. They both followed a similar journey but reached totally different conclusions. The complexity of their thoughts and the honesty of their presentation was very commendable. Reading their books was like peeling off the layers of rational thinking. I am someone who loves honest thinking, I usually get along with people who have a different or somewhat unique thinking. I strongly believe that one should cultivate his own ideas rather than following someone's path. Not for being edgy and notorious, but for actually having depth to your own personality. I have seen individuals being sheep and following a common thought process. Such people, I believe, bring shame to individuality and intellectualism. These people are the ones who talk about freedom of thought only when it is for their sake. They don’t have the required depth or I should say maturity required to understand the opposing perspectives and this is a very huge problem in today’s society. The media develops individuals with similar thinking, same thoughts, same opinions. People are losing their depth and becoming more like robots. They are wired to think a similar way, perform similar tasks and have similar thought processes. Due to the increasing focus on specializations we are making people lose their ability to think outside the box. Thinking outside your given work is considered unnecessary and a waste of energy, so instead of thinking for yourself why not borrow thoughts from someone, where to borrow ready made thoughts?, from the media of course. It is a loop we have to escape, we as individuals are supposed to think, we are supposed to think differently and build opinions, only then one will have the depth a human is supposed to have. And that is why I admire philosophy, it promotes free thinking and rationality, which is a deadly combination for being an able human. I recommend people reading this article, to go out and think more often, build your opinions and be open minded to alter them whenever necessary. By : Tejas Kedar Sahasrabudhe BBA-IT(2021-24) The Magic of Belief. CURSOR 5.0 | VOLUME 5 ISSUE 1, JANUARY 2023 Belief is a tool humans have been using from the very beginning. It is responsible for making and braking of societies and civilizations. Belief ideally should be unconditional, you do not need any reasoning to believe in something. You must be naive enough to overlook every opposing thought in order to truly believe. If a person truly believes in god then he does not need any reasoning for it. Such strong believes are established in tough times. The times when people lose control over the situation, the times when there is no justice. People have suffered and were tortured to the degree we can't even comprehend. People lost everything and everyone around them, because their was no justice. Today when you look around, you do not see people slandering each other and constantly fighting with each other. We live in a fairly peaceful era where wars and conflicts are considered immoral, any act of vengeance and anger is looked down upon.We in fact have the whole judicial system to make justice reach every part of the society. We consider ourselves CURSOR 5.0 | VOLUME 5 ISSUE 1, JANUARY 2023 highly diplomatic, civilized and peace loving individuals. As today we see everything streamlined, planned and predicted we no longer seem to require the age old tool of belief. With belief being side lined, we are lacking hopeful creatures rather, we see an increasing swarm of chronic pessimists and clueless, aimless individuals, they want everything to be practical. They don't want to put the goggles of believe. They see the world as it is, they constantly tend to limit and confine themselves to reality. People are nowadays very quick to surrender, give up and soon satisfactory with what they have. They rather fixate with reality, But then, reality is nihilistic. Truth is a void, once exposed to it you are sure to lose hopes. No matter how hard we try to encompass reality, it won't fit in our small humanoid existence. We are losing the charismatic magic of belief and leading towards a path, which we don’t know where ends. People are slowly but steadily losing hope in the name of practicality, somewhere we are losing the magic of belief. Reality is sure to disappoint you in many ways, it will torment the ones trying to fixate over it, It will reward those who fight through it. There is no magic in reality but it is there in belief. The order of this world is such that, you are supposed to have a miniature reality of your own. The reality does not follow our judicial system, it does not exist to serve justice. It is unfair and cruel in many ways. But the miracles, will only happen with those who dream and belief. Be a warrior, belief in things that don't seem practical. Have high hopes from yourselves and just be naive enough to unconditionally believe! After an episode when the screen blacks out and leaves you with a time lapse to the next episode I stare at my reflection and think about that pending to do list of mine , “well one more episode won’t hurt”, that’s a classic gets me all the time, how to get the better out of this. Streaming platforms have great content not just the ghosthunters and rom coms, if we just browse a little more this binging may come with perks. Marketing refers to the combined efforts to enable sales of goods and services. Marketing is a societal process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating and offering and exchanging products and services of value with other. Marketer is the person who is responsible in creating involvement between the customer and the product or service. Here are 5 movies/series which you would find on Netflix and could add to your marketing knowledge: CURSOR 5.0 | VOLUME 5 ISSUE 1, JANUARY 2023 1.The Social Network Content accelerates and goes around via a network. We need to market correctly to a defined target market the movie “The Social Network” is an outstanding example for this. This movie is about Mark Zuckerberg coming up with the idea of Facebook. This tech-savy documentary is paired with college drama and has some genius marketing takeaways. This movie proved once again that all the data is on the internet and is accessible. When marketing a product exclusivity is important that means to focus on the defined target market, for Zuckerberg it was college students (Harvard initially to be precise), it is important to understand what the market needs and solve it through your business, the problem that Facebook tackled was connectivity of students and enabling relations among peers. This movie also emphasised on the fact that we need to spread the word about our business through the right people to the right people, and if the software is appealing it will grow. 2.Creative Brain Essentially humans started with a wheel to a cartwheel and over the generations of innovation we have the model X from Tesla, while the core purpose remained same. The idea of 4 wheels and some space was put together with innovation, comfort, style and we have a chic model, that’s how creative the human brain can get. Marketing is about marketing creative products creatively. In the movie “Creative Brain” Dr David Eagleman talks about the brain, its processes and the aspect of creativity along the road of evolution with different artists and field experts. The movie explains why people put thought into doing things that they do or choices that they make and why we imagine things. Imagination of individuals is what businesses try to achieve through their products and services. The movie emphasises on how the things we see have an impact on us only when we connect to them, as in have an emotional thread attached. This is what marketers aim to achieve, they try to connect to the audience and make them drawn to their products. This movie justifies a lot of marketing practices that already exist by logically reasoning them with processes of the brain and its evolution over time. 3.Girl boss Rags to riches is the perfect example that one can achieve what they want by putting in loads of effort and working towards it. A girl with big dreams living in the chic city of San Francisco discovering herself and her purpose. This series “Girl Boss” is exactly something which I would cuddle up to to binge during the weekend. The only thing more captivating than Sophia’s bright blue eyes was her passion for vintage fashion. She had an eye for fashion and decided to upgrade thrift finds and sell them off eBay. This movie comes with a side of marketing tactics. The key takeaway is to know your niche market and what they like. The tagline “Nasty Girl” itself brings out a sense of empowerment, wildness and boldness to the brand which is very appealing. Perhaps one of the most important CURSOR 5.0 | VOLUME 5 ISSUE 1, JANUARY 2023 concept; connect with the customer, build a connection that comes through perfectly with this tagline. Another attractive feature of this movie is authenticity, Sophia’s brand represents exactly who she is and doesn’t cross her at all and that is what a brand should portray. Connecting with the original founders of the brand helps marketers understand the purpose of the brand and portray it to its audience appropriately. 4.Padman Essential products are easy to market as they mostly come under convenience goods which one wouldn’t neglect, then again the brands, the variety and the different price points make it a difficult choice for the consumer. Marketing an essential product to another customer segment who may not realize its importance is a herculean task, the movie “Padman” had it’s fair attempt here. Bollywood has produced many classics over time and to not include at least one in this list would be a sin. Padman is one of Akshay Kumar’s most famous movies. It’s main purpose was increasing social awareness with analysis I realized it comes with a ton of marketing lessons. It is based in a village in India and explains how a man struggled to convince women to believe in his product (sanitary pads). This movie is based on the real life experience of Arunachalam Muruganantham. An important tactic to understand is to draw similarity between the marketer and the customer, in the movie when the lady spoke about the menstrual cycle and the importance of using a sanitary napkin the women of the village listened to her, the simple conclusion being women preferred to speak to women about their bodies. Another important takeaway from the movie was pricing tactics, the product which was being promoted existed in the market but its high price made it distant from its consumer market and when Padman sold his product for relatively cheaper prices he gained popularity and preference. The menstrual cycle is considered as a “taboo” topic to even talk about so the marketing tactics had to be even more appealing. This movie also managed to create buzz for social awareness about the topic and has been well accepted. 5.Social Dilemma Digital marketing is a main and important branch of marketing, very relevant and applicable to this day and age. Most business have an online presence and consider it as a major asset to extend its reach. Having a social media presence is a must but having a good strategy to implement onto your audience is more important. The movie “Social Dilemma” is an extension to the same while raising ethical concerns about the working of the tech industry. This movie is a documentary drama hybrid narrated by various tech experts who have worked in social media companies from Pinterest to Google and Facebook. This movie did create a lot of fear in the minds of the viewers as to how much they are being watched online, it’s too blurry to draw a line between good marketing strategy and ethical behaviour. However this movie has some good marketing lessons and values for marketers. So it’s not just me a lot of people spend a lot of time on social media hence it is important for businesses to be on every CURSOR 5.0 | VOLUME 5 ISSUE 1, JANUARY 2023 social media platform and have a noticeable presence, this may vary for a few depending on the target market for example elderly people are more likely to use Facebook and Twitter rather than Instagram. The movie surrounds around a teen’s life and the backend analysis of her choices and behaviour this helps marketers understand the human brain what works, and what doesn’t. The movie also sheds light on the importance of ethics in marketing, in our pursuit for success we shouldn’t endanger the mental health and well-being of our fellow humans. So in conclusion binging can be productive and fun at the same time. We as the Gen Z have access to all the content, everything’s on the web so we need to know what data we want and what we derive out of it. Marketing is a tricky field and may take years to experiment and progress but these tips can help us make the right choice in the long run. By : Maryianne Thomas (BBA-IT 2020-2023) A Poem On Social Issues CURSOR 5.0 | VOLUME 5 ISSUE 1, JANUARY 2023 Injustice and inequality, A constant battle to be fought, A world where some have plenty, While others are left for nought. Poverty and hunger, A daily reality for some, A struggle for survival, A never-ending, weary sum. Discrimination and prejudice, A stain on our society, A barrier to progress, A source of pain and misery. CURSOR 5.0 | VOLUME 5 ISSUE 1, JANUARY 2023 Climate change and pollution, A threat to our very earth, We need to take action, For a brighter, cleaner birth Mental health and addiction, A silent suffering within, A need for empathy, And a call to begin. Social issues, so many, A complex web to untangle, Let us come together, Before we are forever strangled. A world where all are equal, Where love and kindness reign, A world where social issues, No longer are a constant refrain. Lack of access to education, A hindrance to progress, A barrier to success, For the youth who need it the most. Homelessness and unemployment, A cycle of despair, A need for intervention, For those without a place to repair. Gender and race inequalities, A root cause of discrimination, Acceptance shouldn’t come that hard, For true peace comes with integration. Social issues persist, In the modern world we know, But with empathy and action, A brighter future, we can grow.
