JWD 2 YEARBOOK CLASS OF 2020 Congratulations! If you are reading this, YOU DID IT! You have made it to the end of your Generation Australia's Junior Web Developer Program. This achievement is no small feat. You have successfully participated in 3 intense months of learning. Pushing yourselves to grow and develop new skills that would take many people years to develop. You should look back at this time with great pride, having made new friends, formed new habits, displayed determination and hard work and for taking the first step toward your future careers. Generation Australia JWD Cohort 2, we could not be more proud of your achievements. This is your Yearbook. To Code Busters, Code busters, I’m so grateful to have been your pod instructor these past twelve weeks. Meeting you all and watching your progress has been a pleasure. Immediately I was able to connect with you all - which allowed me to feel comfortable in sharing personal experiences which I hope you all learnt from. A path filled with ups and downs, we had our challenges, but we worked through it, and brought each other up together. I’m so proud of each code buster in what you have achieved over such a short time, and look forward to seeing your next steps! From your instructor, Alessandro Alex, your positive energy and calm vibes provided our pod with such warmth. I admire your outlook on life, your dedication (those long, long days!) and your ability to pick up and put in to use these new skills you’ve learnt throughout the course. Diana D1ers. Your willingness to participate, light-heartedness and openness encouraged your podmates to do the same. Codebusters wouldn’t be the same without you! You’ve come so far in such a short time, I admire your ability to convey your learnings clearly - a skill that will benefit you in the industry! Gowri Gowri, a strong technical mind combined with a cool attitude. I admire your commitment to making notes each session and PASTING THEM IN CHAT IN ALL CAPS. You provided a foundation to those working with you, inspiring others to keep pushing through, even when things seemed too difficult. You’re going to make a great hacker! Irina I admire Irina’s focus. Irina is determined, and it shows in the work she produces. She’ll keep working away, reaching out when needed, and applying what she’s learnt. Irina, you have made great strides in such a short time, you’re leveling up each and every day - and making sure to include comments. Jamie Jamie, I admire your creative mind and eye for design. You brought a spark to our pod that inspired those around you. Always fine tuning the code, as well as your pppprocessss. Taking the time to think about the bigger picture, and of course, being the pod’s official recording reminder-er! Martin Martin, how far you’ve come! I admire your dedication. You went the extra mile to solidify your learnings, applying lessons learnt to previous exercises - and it shows. You bring a strong understanding of technology to those working with you, and can adapt to difficult situations. Prameela Prameela! A kind soul. Prasana Prasana - or prawn, or whatever Jamie’s auto-correct decided to call you each day. I admire your ability to learn and to inspire others. I can safely say the entire pod, my self included, was always excited to see what you had produced each and every day. You’ve developed your own style, and it shows in your work. You’ve progressed so far in so many areas. Your technical ability, yes, but also your communication, presentation, confidence and code aesthetics! Rob Rob - what a trooper. You were dealt some tough cards throughout the course; losing teammates, your computer giving up - but you never did! No matter what, you showed up, persisted through it all and always came through with something fantastic to show the pod. I loved the extra work you put into your openers, applying what you had learnt in the previous weeks. Thanh Thanh, the woman of many talents - you can now add programmer to the list! I admire your dedication, creativity and positivity. I know I couldn’t accomplish what you have in such a short time, especially while managing a new born bub! You were pivotal in the development of our pod’s culture. Showing the others it’s okay to have a laugh and a light-hearted approach - it kept the vibes positive, especially when things started to get tough. Tim Tim, congrats on the job! Your quiet, yet curious demeanour showed throughout the 12- weeks of your journey and your heads- down, I-will-get-this growth mindset was an inspiration! You have all achieved and grown so much during this short course and have all the skills necessary to excel at your first dev role. You also see how these skills will enhance your lives overall, in front of and away from the computer. I look forward to hearing the stories of how you go out and conquer the JWD world! From your instructor, For Robin, A story for Robin... It was a cold winter morning as she added firewood to her little fireplace in her beautiful cosy cabin, nested in the heavenly south east ranges of the land of the golden wattle. Surrounded by hopping Joeys, hibernating Koalas, chirping Loris and her dearest, purring Ramona, she switched on the screen of her magic box that zoomed her to the 15 eager apprentices waiting for their Robbo to teach them the mysteries of the world of the websites. But first, it was time for an ice-breaker. One apprentice started: I had a cat named Robin. She died, she died. Mum said she was sleeping. She lied, she lied. Why oh why is my cat dead? Couldn’t that Chrysler have hit me instead? As she led her apprentices through the tracks of the web world, she showed how the only way to achieve the best of anything is to work as a team, and call out if the path gets tricky. Twelve weeks later, the apprentices looked 12 years older. But they were happy. In the final reflection, one of them sang: I started a program, with a coder named Robin. They threw us some JavaScript, and I started a sobbin’. But Robbo showed us the way, with her chicks and her cat, Now even I’ve got the confidence to go learn React. Today, as they all go out on their own paths to build more websites, they all feel the heaviness in their heart of moving away from their much loved guru, who will forever be remembered for her encouraging and calming words, smiling face and heart of gold. And then a t-rex appeared. -- Bitman & Robin (minus Robin) ...and a few special thank yous Many many thanks to you Robin for being an awesome instructor. I love that you are very calm and relaxed all the time. Your easy going nature made learning so easy for me. You inspire me to be patient and persistent in learning the modules because of your encouragement and supportive nature. And I love the spontaneity of it all — including the cats, the wallabies, and everything about nature. It took the stress out of the most demanding days of learning when I felt giving up learning. Oh JavaScript! I wish you all the best and hopefully we all remain connected after the course. The past twelve weeks have had many challenges; however your understanding and words of encouragement have always given me a positive reinforcement all the way. No matter how stressed I felt, pod sessions with you helped me to look at the positive side of things. Very grateful for your support and guidance. All the very best to you for your future endeavours. Your honest, authentic & natural approach to leading the pod has been a real kahoot! Upbeat & engaging at every session, my only regret is that I didn’t get to spend the entire 12 weeks under your tutelage. Thank you for keeping it real and making it a fun, enjoyable & memorable experience! My gratitude to our pod leader loving Robin, for all you have done, which I will never forget. I truly appreciate you and the time you spent helping us in many ways. You are always very kind, patient, accessible and genuinely care about your profession and your students. Thank you very much for your assistance, keeping us engaged, learning and laughing. I enjoyed every minute of our pod sessions as well as your marvelous sense of humor. Love you and we will miss you. For Happy Coders I am so grateful to teach such hardworking positive individuals, each student made me so proud to be a part of the course and I believe everyone will be able to apply their knowledge in their next career and hopefully progress into excellent developers. Everyone has learnt the skills to become a programmer and with such a broad skill set across the course I am sure there will be many different avenues of work and I hope to hear about all the success you have soon. I am sure you will look back on this course and reflect on how much you achieved in such a short time! For Aaron Add sub heading Please follow the link to view a musical number in honour of Aaron. ---> https://streamable.com/ji6t2e From your instructor From your mentor Coming on to the Generation JWD Program as a mentor, I had no idea what to expect and probably neither did you! 12 weeks on and I have had the privilege to work with an amazing group of people, both within the Generation organisation and with each of my 20 students. For many of you, having a mentor was something new – and perhaps sometimes uncomfortable. However, it was also a great gift from Generation to give you the time to self- evaluate and dig deeper into who you are and define yourself not just by what you do. Many of you have pivoted from another career, life, country or a challenging situation to commit to this program for 12 weeks, and, even from the outside looking in, it sure didn’t look easy! But what guts - what persistence and determination, and in some cases, sheer stubbornness not to give up! You should all be so proud of yourselves!Graduating must give you such a huge sense of achievement and pride. I have felt very connected to each one of you as I accompanied you on your journey .Ultimately, what I appreciated the most out this experience and hope to pass on were these key learnings:1.Never underplay your lived experiences. Everybody has a story. Share yours with pride.2.You can’t buy attitude, enthusiasm, determination and all those other things that make you, YOU. 3.It’s not what you do. It’s who you are, it’s how you show up and it’s what you bring to any situation, role or relationship.4.Enjoy the Journey! You each have so much to offer the world just by being who you are, and I hope you embrace your strengths, keep building your skills and value your amazing-ness as you move forward in your new careers. I look forward to hearing how you progress! Congratulations!!
